Background: Celtic tribes arrived on the island between 600-150 B.C. Invasions by Norsemen that began in the late 8th century were finally ended when King Brian BORU defeated the Danes in 1014. English invasions began in the 12th century and set off more than seven centuries of Anglo-Irish struggle marked by fierce rebellions and harsh repressions. A failed 1916 Easter Monday Rebellion touched off several years of guerrilla warfare that in 1921 resulted in independence from the UK for 26 southern counties; six northern (Ulster) counties remained part of the United Kingdom. In 1948 Ireland withdrew from the British Commonwealth; it joined the European Community in 1973. Irish governments have sought the peaceful unification of Ireland and have cooperated with Britain against terrorist groups. A peace settlement for Northern Ireland, known as the Good Friday Agreement and approved in 1998, is being implemented with some difficulties.

well hello! Patri and I just got home, we left early yesterday morning with pablo, claudia and jorge for Donegal. I now know that brazilians speak portugese, not spanish or... brazilian. This is good! And it was neat, hearing the two languages (spanish and portugese), because theyre so alike but at the same time, not. Donegal is in the northern area of the republic of ireland, and we managed to go through north ireland (the UK) for about an hour. we had a pub lunch in elliskenny. Or.. some town of a name like that, haha! So many of the names [View Full Entry]

Europe » Ireland » County Donegal » Donegal
Well so it starts...well kind of. First trip was the 8hour bus journey from Cork to Donegal. We encountered some wild countryside and sharing with farm animals was not easy but I managed to survive the trip and landed home around 6pm on Monday evening. The next few days will consist of chores around the house and a few friend visits to Belfast, Letterkenny, Sligo and Mayo. I fly out on Tuesday 25th September...Check out the route by clicking on the Map above... Till then........ [View Full Entry]

Wilds of Donegal

Europe » Ireland » County Donegal » Donegal
It took us a while to realise that there are, in fact, no sign posts in the county of Donegal unless of course you are prepared to hack your way through 3 foot of hedge to get at them. Our third accidental detour of the day took us nearly into the Atlantic on one side with only 1 half a mile of lake to swim across to get us to Maura Toomey's wedding starting in approximately 15 minutes on the other side. Some frantic reversing, cursing and waving at fists at the gentleman in the petrol station who had sent us [View Full Entry]

Hey Everyone, How's it going? Hope all is well at home. I've now been in Ireland for 2 weeks. The two nights we stayed in Dublin were a lot of fun. We left Dublin on the Firday morning to catch a bus to Bundoran. We had to catch the tram to the bus station and we couldn't find it so we asked a guy to direct us to the tram station. We thought we had found it cause the sign said Temporary Garda Station!!!! We all went in with our packs on and knocked on the window. A man with [View Full Entry]

Mac-a'bhaird

My Irish claim to fame, my great grandfather was Michael Augustus Ward (Mac an Bhaird) from Donegal. My grandmother (Ellen Ward) full blooded Irish. Michael Ward (Bhaird or 'bard') married Mary Moran, daughter of Martin Moran (married Ellen Rogers), immigrant to Genesee, Pa (Potter County) in 1840 (before the potato famine. Genesee ended up an Irish haven. Martin was one of the leading citizens. He immigrated from Mayo County. Michael Ward was very young when he immigrated fro [View Full Entry]

First... Paul... yeah... I can't believe I was witness to the amount of music I was during this summer. I feel so honored... it was absolutely amazing. Cormac's Parents... your excitement was spectacular... I am so glad you enjoy this... Keep in touch and thanks again for reading... ----------------------------------- Hey all... Well... Elaine did not head up to Letterkenny as planned last Tuesday so we headed out to Róisín Dubh to see Solas play (second show of theirs) and it was fantastic. The small and intimate nature of this place always makes shows just beautiful. After that, we [View Full Entry]

In Ireland the prime real estate seems to go to the animals
Okay, first things first. We're sorry for dropping our last blog entry after we got back. However, when we returned from Ireland to our new home in Boston first things were also first, and those first things were things like moving and weddings and unfortunately not wrapping up our last blog entry. Anyway, when last you heard, we were about to leave Germany for Ireland... We loved Ireland. Loved, loved, loved it. It may have been the friendliest, most beautiful place we visited. The fact that the Irish speak English helped, but the green, sheep-studded landscapes, thousand foot sea [View Full Entry]

Ummm...
Not as tropical as it looks

St Patricks day is today, incase anyone forgot, and im sure nobody did because this whole campus is covered by hung over/drunk students wearing green. We watch boondock saints, play irish drinking games, and see shamrocks everywhere. When I signed online today google popped up and I noticed that instead of the usual blue red and yellow google font, it was "google" was written in shamrocks. Because of the commercialization of holidays we lose the true meaning of them. Technology such as the internet has made the day of rememberance for St. Patrick a green drinking day. The same thing happen [View Full Entry]

hello guys... the last few days I spent in galway were pretty fun. I met a couple of teachers from colorado who talked me into driving with them up the coast, actually it didn't take much talking, they are going into dublin on the same day i am so why not have a free ride. so i guess that its not really a change of plans if you didn't have any plans in the first place. In the meantime I saw the cliffs of moher again and snapped a few pictures. Last night ended up in westport which is the capital [View Full Entry]
