This is the 1st ‘episode’ of another of 'our' travel experiences. The collective ‘episodes’ describe our journey from our arrival in London (2nd week of June) and across the 'ditch' to Ireland for a few weeks before a return home in mid July. This ‘episode’ describes our few days in London, and our first fortnight in Ireland. As always, if you want to 'see' more detail in an accompanying picture, click it to enlarge. We've attached a few pics that give you a flavour of our journey, and some 'flow over' past the dialogue. Ahhhh, it's like being home again. There is something about London that is so appealing. Yes, it's a 'world' city with all the hubbub and 'buzz' that that implies. Yes, most speak a dialect of English, and after many of our r ... read more

Set off from Baltimore at 0900 and arrive Castletownbere at 1630. Sally and I arrived at the mooring about 0630 and brought her in to the small pontoon were we loaded on the gear. We had no wind and had to motor the whole way in sunshine. We went out around Cape Clear and rounded Mizzen in fairly calm conditions. Passed Sheeps head and then tried unsuccessfully to catch a few fish for dinner bit there were no bites.....It was a warm sunny day but no wind and constant motoring made it a bit tiresome.. Motored in through Pipers Sound and tied up at the main fishing wharf on to a raft of five other boats..... we made the obligatory visit to McCarthys Bar to watch the tail end of the Clare - Tip hurling game ... read more

Early to the train station to begin our 3 day 2 night tour to SW Ireland. Railtours Ireland is a very nifty travel company. With many tours to book online, all from Dublin, you can do a 1 to 5 day tour using rail for the long hauls, buses meet you at the station and provide sightseeing. Today we headed straight to Cork by train, were accompanied by a guide. We toured Blarney Castle, time to kiss the Blarney stone, shop, have lunch, then on to Cobh. This is the port of Cork with a long shipping history. The Queenstown ' Story told of the famine ships, the Titanic, which left here after boarding passengers for its ill fated voyage. The Lusitania was sunk off the coast here and local fishermen headed out to bring back ... read more

We travelled by train to Shrewsbury, on a long day that involved as much waiting as it did travel – waiting for a connection at Brussels, waiting for a connection at London Euston, waiting for a replacement train at Crewe when the rostered guard didn’t show up. Shrewsbury is a nice quiet town, a bit historic and in a nice setting but for us it was good for some down time after all the cities we have been to. It does have some nearby attractions though. We visited Ironbridge, a UNESCO site and regarded as the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. Ironbridge has numerous museums celebrating the various industrial activities that took place in the valley – iron-making, pottery, coal mining – as well as the famous (and appropriately-named) Iron Bridge, the first iron bridge in ... read more

Got FR in the water this afternoon. High tide was about 1800 and we were in about 1500. Tied up to a pontoon and went through that annual moment when you start the engine for the first time. Will it start? Is there cooling water coming out the back? It actually started the first turn of the key and ran beautifully all the way to Baltimore. It was a beautiful day for it and it took about 90 minutes. There were a few hairy moments when we were reading 1.5M on the depth but we never bottomed out. Found our mooring occupied by a Glenans boat so we took the first available and spent the night on that. Next day the Glenans people explained that they had lost a mooring in a storm and had to ... read more

The plan is to put FR in the water at Oldcourt Thursday afternoon (2nd June). The weathre forecast is for 25 degrees and the tides are high about 1730 so we should have a beautiful 90 minute motor to the mooring in Baltimore, west Cork. Its bank Holiday weekend so there should be a bit of a buzz about the place. We're planning to spend a few days on board getting FR in good shape. We have two dinghys. The small 1.5M (?) we'll take with us on our summer trip and the 4M (?) we'll leave at the mooring. I dropped the 30HP Mariner in for a service last week in Skib. I decided it was probably cheaper to spend money getting the outboard working properly than on getting surgery to my right arm! So ... read more

The abandoned skeletons of half finished houses litter the west coast of Ireland. They sit alongside hundreds of for sale signs, fire sale signs might be more appropriate. Each one a memorial to the great Irish experiment now lying in ruins like the occasional old abandoned castle you pass on the side of the road. 30 years ago Ireland began a bold experiment. It made a conscious commitment as a nation to invest in education. When Ireland joined the EEC, it had this ready-made workforce of highly educated young people. IT and other innovative companies and drug manufacturers set up or moved their European operations to Ireland. All looked rosy. UNTIL the financial spivs and the desk jockeys moved in. Average punters were encouraged to borrow beyond their capacity to repay on the promise of ever ... read more

Hey everyone, I'm back with more adventures and get prepared for the pictures 'cause they are amazing! I've done some really exciting travelling in the past two weeks, hence why I haven't really been keeping up with this blog as well as I should, but I promise to try my best! I've also been very busy with work since I finally have a semi-permanent full-time job and I'm fairly knackered by the end of the day to be honest. Yes I know I just used that Irish word; I don't have a goofy accent yet, but the slang is pervasive and slowly creeping into my speech haha. I also work with a very large group of young Irish people so I'm definitely picking up the lingo faster now, my personal favourites are "that's/you're grand", "deadly", "just ... read more

Hello from Cobh (pronounced ‘cove’) Ireland. We arrived this morning right on time, with a nice smooth docking. We had left a 6:30 wake-up call (that’s 12:30 the night before in St Louis) so we would have plenty of time to get dressed and have breakfast before reporting to the main theater for our half-day tour to leave at 8:15. Our guide was named Theresa but apparently the driver did not have a name. We boarded the bus just a few feet from the gangway and drove through the little town of Cobh. The bus drove alongside the River Lee and through the center of Cork. Since this is Sunday morning, traffic was light in Cork and we moved along quickly. We traveled through the central city, with the guide pointing out many places and providing ... read more

Alright, this update is something i should have done last night, but i was way too drunk to give a proper post :P Cork and I didn't get off to a good start. I couldn't find my hostel, even though i was sure i was in the right place (i was very close, if i'd expanded my search by a 1-block radius i would have found a sign pointing me further on), so i spent the majority of the first hour in Cork wandering aimlessly for a tourist information point that has relocated in the time since my guide book was published (2008 lol). I did end up finding my hostel at about 2:30pm, and the guy at the desk told me Blarney Castle (the real reason i'm in Cork) closed at 5p, and if i ... read more
