Sunday, May 28, 2006 On Sunday we get up around 10:30 and put on the warmest clothes we can find. We head to Segafredo one of the many coffee shops in downtown Reykjavik to order breakfast and some much needed java. The breakfast sandwiches are just variations of the same food you would eat all day long. None of the standard American ingredients of eggs, bacon, etc….and many of the orders come with a small side salad. Interesting but good. After breakfast, we hit an internet café and have a grand time searching the keyboard for the @ symbol. We highly recommend that you locate this crucial keystroke before you plop down your money and start paying by the minute! Once we checked our email we headed back to the guesthouse to prepare for our horseback ... read more

We made it to Reyjavik, the city that literally never sleeps! The sun supposedly sets here around 11 pm, however it never really sets. The sky remains a dark, hazy blue and then the sun rises again around 3 am. So your body never really knows what time it is...this makes the nightlife - rather the time that should be night - infinite...but fun! Dinner last night was quite interesting and expensive! We had some of the island´s specialties. We ate part of Moby Dick...raw! It was like tuna tutaki except not as good and was dark meat. Gayle ate the mother of the horse she´s going to ride today...horse carpaccio....she claims though it was only his great aunt. We all had to try a bite but the rest of us felt a little guilty about ... read more

Saturday, May 27, 2006--Temperature, Hi 50°F and Lo 37°F. On Saturday, we sleep in due to our late night out. Some of us were perkier than others and you can probably guess who based on yesterday’s blog. But, we all rallied and got ready to go to the Blue Lagoon to test whether it was true that it can cure a late night out. The Blue Lagoon is basically a big lake of geothermal waste but it is oh so pretty and relaxing. Although it was only 50°F, we change into our swimsuits in a very European dressing room (don’t worry, we wore flip flops and didn’t touch a thing) and venture outside to the Blue Lagoon. The internet explains: Due to the proximity of the sea that seeps into the underground water system, the water ... read more

Day #1---Friday, May 26, 2006--Temperature, Hi 50°F and Lo 39°F. We arrived in Iceland at 6:25 am from Baltimore after a 5 hour and 40 minute flight and go through customs. We read in our guidebooks that to save money the locals drink at home first before they head out. We decide to adopt that custom and head straight to the duty free shop and stock up on wine for the weekend. We then hop in a cab with Jón (one of many we meet on the trip) and head to the guesthouse. We can’t check in until 12:00 pm so we store our luggage at the guesthouse and set out to eat and explore the city. We head to Café Paris to get some coffee and try out the “kleina” (Iceland’s doughnut).Café Paris is dead ... read more

I really cannot explain how amazing Iceland is so I will be brief and let my photos tell the story (although, the photos do not do it justice would you believe!) From exploding geysirs to spectacular waterfalls, driving over 1000 year old lava to snow mobiling on a glacier, Iceland has everything... except nightfall as it is light pretty much 24hrs at this time of year. It honestly never really got dark the whole 4 days we were there! The first day we explored the sights of Reykjavik (all 3 of them!) and managed to get kicked out of a church for no reason other than we were not part of the graduation ceremony! The real fun started though when we picked up our hire cars (4WDs) and departed for a 3 day road trip. Day ... read more

While all of our other friends are preparing for a holiday weekend and lazy days on the beach, at the lake or by the pool, we are headed to Iceland. If you've checked weather.com lately, the highs are around 45 and sunny days appear rare. So are we crazy to sacrifice an extended beach vacation, obtaining that coveted golden tan while sipping margaritas? I think not. Hoping that Kelly finally got on the ball and completed her assignment (yes, Angela likes to hand out assignments for itineraried trips...a point I'll return to later) we should at least enjoy one lazy day lounging in the geothermally warmed waters of The Blue Lagoon. This man made body of water is in simpliest terms an over-sized hot tub with temperatures averaging around 104 degrees (F) in the swimmable areas. ... read more

New York is known for many things but not its' Danish. I longed for the inanely decadent mille-feuille pastry I had in Scandinavia, layers of sheer pleasure. Plus a visit to Iceland is crucial to escape the distractions of Manhattan. So this "Lover of the Arctic Circle's" search for ephiphany abroad brought me to the northernmost capital in the world. "Reykjavik" named by the first settlers, the Vikings in 800AD, the "Land of Smoke" (which is actually the steam rising from the ground in underground geothermal hot springs with 300-700 degree F. waters.) I consulted the U.S. State Dept. website to check for travel warnings before I left. There are no terrorist or crime threats here, but I would have to deal with frequent volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and they warn that several tourists per year fall ... read more

I'm not sure if this counts as a pit stop given I never actually got off the plane. And I know..I know...I'm not racing The Amazing Race so I promise to leave Phil out of future entries. But as we flew in, it felt like I had been here before. Then I realized I was remembering some seasons ago, TAR episode where one of the destinations was Iceland. Living vicariously through the racers has definitely skewed my own reality. Only now I can comment from a window seat view rather than a TV screen many miles away. Instead of pitching a tent in the freezing cold (OR throwing my partner down on an icefield WWF style) I was trapped in an uncomfortably hot plane where a kid vomitted as a result. However Iceland seems just as ... read more

The Blue Lagoon is a geothermal spa where you can pay to go in and deepen and immerse yourself in a lagoon filled with steamy hot water (about 100 F or 40 C) from nearby Svartsengi power plant. Why blue ? because of high concentration of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria). These bacteria could not thrive as the tempt cool in the air. It claims that the dead algae in the lagoon combined with silica mud can be cured certain kinds of skin condition. On that day in mid-april when I was there, the air tempt is cold (about 45 F) and the water tempt is hot (98 F). Make an appointment to have a silica in-water spa treatment in the open air lagoon. Laying down on a wooden bench subimmersed in hot water, you are pampered with ... read more

Today taking the Golden Circle trip to visit some of the most famous natural attractions of Iceland. Got picked up at the guesthouse at 8 AM and the tour starts a few minutes before scheduled to depart at 830 AM. We are leaving the cosmopolitan behind on route to the Nesjavellir power plant. We are passing vast areas of snow-covered ground as the winterly cold season is still upon us. It is a beautiful lanscape of snow-covered peak mountains and nature blended together. very scenic. It is seemed untouched and is still like as in its original stage as of the early days. The Nesjavellir power plant opened in Sept 1990 by ultilizing the extremely forceful steam pouring out from the deep holes in the borehole field 2000 meters below the ground to generate electricity. It ... read more
