Yesturday was amazing First off we all met down at the downtown branch, about 35 of us and jumped in 9 seater buses to go to some boxing place to play some games. We played tug o war and our team won, and then we played that sack race game where you jump in sacks but there was 4 in a sack instead which was interesting and then some other game where in pairs you had to pop the balloons as quick as possible in pairs by using no hands. We all then went to the boat to go fishing and it was really rocky, felt really sick and there was loads of free beer i couldnt drink. Brian caught 15 fish! yes 15 in an hour but its wasnt really a competition you just hung ... read more

In disbelief is where you can find me... A lonely land it is. I know everyone is well. Summer is all but done. As is my time. I had a great last day in London. Bertie and i rolled around Camden, Soho, Covent and the usual sights and then his brother came down from up north and we smashed a great dinner and an AMAZING desert prepared by their mom. It was really nice to have a home cooked meal with a family. In NE Turkey was the last time i had that. With Volkan´s family. I hope they are doing well. I flew out that morning and got in here to Iceland. It was pissing down and i couldn´t be bothered with hitching or the cost of public transportation along with the lack of freedom ... read more

Well we made it! Weather- Damp and Rainy on and off Temp- about 13 degrees Location- Reykjavik Downtown Brach Touched down at Keflavik at about 10 30 Saturday night, found the car rental desk, was given the keys to our car and we had to make our way over to the guest house in Grindjavik(sp?) Everything was lovely there, and we had to leave yesturday for our new accomodation over in Keflavik yesturday. The place looks like a HOLE from the outside, but it is rather pleasent inside. The stairs are only about 5ft 10 high so needless to say I keep hitting my head on the ceiling on the way up! Yesturday was lovely, driving on the right is hilarious as I don´t have to drive! and I´m sure Brian wouldn´let me loose in the ... read more

Picture this if you can... We’re sitting somewhere in Europe amongst other backpackers. It doesn’t really matter where. It could be an internet cafe or a hostel bedroom waiting while I track down the sweet soapy scent of my last pair of clean socks, but if you’d have spent any time with me in such places then there’s more than a good chance that you would have heard this conversation. So, where have you been? Lille, Ypres, London, Iceland... Iceland! Really! Wow!! What’s it like? Iceland is one of those places that is a bit mythical and distant and somewhere that almost everyone I talked to wants to visit but doesn’t often get to... kind of like Australia. People know vague things about it: eg. that Iceland is actually green and Greenland is covered in ice ... read more

I have long been hoping to visit this island country, for it has seemed to me a very special place. It is just the distance and the high expense that prevented me to go there at a earlier time. Fortunately, I have a chance to be in Europe this summer and I happened to find out the airfare to Iceland is not that expensive. So I decided to take a detour from Europe to this mid-Alantic island. Before I came to Iceland, I have heard about the spectacular natural wonders in the country. One thing that troubled me was transport, as I don't drive and I was not sure whether there would be good public transport. As a result, I planned to stay in Iceland for just 5 days, and aimed to visit the most famous ... read more

Spent a couple of days in Reykjavik - Iceland's capital. Stayed at the Icelandair hotel, next to the domestic airport. They upgraded us! We went exploring round the city on our first day - saw nice colourful buildings, town hall which is a funny combination of metal/wood/water feature/concrete (!) Tjorn - the big bond, churches (including the lovely architectural main church and many other things. Hired bikes from the hotel for our second day. cycled up to the perlan - restaurant behind the hotel, then down onto the outdoor, geothermally heated spa, where we sat for a while before heading for our whale watching tour. Saw no whales :-( but lots of puffins. Got very cold! Had dinner at Perlan restaurant - it rotates. Good view of the city. Didn't think the menu was as good ... read more

Day 52: Tuesday 27th. June 2006: Cloudy then clear on arrival: After a good flight we arrived in Iceland to a beautiful sunny cloudless day. The scenery is stunning. In a nice hostel, 4 bed dorm with own bathroom, kitchen neat and tidy overlooking camping ground. A walk to the shops for food as usual. Day 53: Sunny: After breakfast we were ready for the day. A walk through the Botanical Gardens and into town. In the afternoon we visited the Culture House - old old manuscrips including the Edda Sagas written by the Icelandic scholar Snorri Sturluson in 1220. To see this kind of thing in a country so isolated is the most amazing feeling and all the more impressive and interesting thanks to Mario for introducing me to these months before we left ... read more

Last Day—Monday, May 29, 2006—Temperature: I don’t know but it was cold on the boat! We started our day quite early…at least Kelly, Angela & Mary Beth. Gayle, having a tendency to become seasick, forewent our whale watching excursion. Even though we were well prepared in winter jackets, hats & gloves, we were none-the-less thankful for the crew’s forethought in providing additional blankets for the trip. The three of us huddled in the blankets, trying to stay warm as we rode on the deck of the ship out to sea. Below deck had a nice viewing area of which we partook on the way back. However we had to have the panoramic view of the mountains and diminishing Reykjavik during our departure. The view was worth it! We first made a 10-minute jaunt to Puffin Island. ... read more
