Day 2: Tuesday, June 23, 2009 KEFLAVIK, ICELAND Landed in Keflavik, Iceland around 6:15am to light rain and heavy overcast. I was worn out. Starting my third day without sleep. Keflavik is about 30 minutes south of the capital city of Reykjavik. So after exchanging Dollars for Icelandic Kronur, I caught the FlyBus to Reykjavik. The FlyBus costs 1700 Kronur (13.29 USD) one-way and is really the best way to go. NOTE: The króna (plural krónur) (sign: kr; code: ISK) is the currency of Iceland. The word króna, meaning "crown", is related to that of other Nordic currencies (such as the Danish krone, Swedish krona and Norwegian krone. The exchange rate at time of my visit was roughly 0.00781291 ISK (Krona) = 1 USD (United States Dollar). TIP: You can save some money by purchasing both ... read more

Having just arrived in the "Smoky Bay" yesterday, we were happy to be able to sleep through our first night of - well - no night. Around June 21st, the days in Iceland are neverending, and even in the south, it never gets even remotely dark. The bikes still packed away in bags, our first mission for the day is to assemble them. Also, two of my former colleagues from Edinburgh uni, an Icelandic couple, recently moved back to Reykjavik. When we got in touch with them, they were eager to meet up - another item on the agenda. Meeting Stefan and Elinborg, who are also on bikes, they give us a short tour around town, and we stop by for lunch at a nice small restaurant that serves fish on skewers. This is also where ... read more

Well - Iceland is amazing! Had a great time - the horseriding was brilliant, and as expected, proved to be a wonderful way to see this bit of the island. My backside did suffer but it was worth it! The horses are real characters and the experience of ‘Tolting’ (their famous gait) across wonderful landscapes and riding through fast flowing rivers will never be forgotten (if not a tad scary at times)! Good mix of a Dane, Swedes, Germans, Icelanders, myself and one other English lady Liz in group on tour. Liz was fine company in Reykjavik too. Seigrun, the wife on Fossnes farm we were based at, was impressive - feeding us all daily with home made bread and cakes, and using home grown tatties and home produced lamb in meals, ferrying us to and ... read more

Hold me up. I have just been to the most amazing country on this planet. Well, that I have visited anyway. I have always wanted to travel to Iceland since I was a wee little boy, associating the exotic country with eskimos and polar bears and that crazy singer Björk. Instead, we were greeted with cyan-coloured hotsprings, ginormous geysers, thunderous waterfalls, volcanic craters, breathtaking landscapes, humpback whales and non-stop partying in the 23 hours of daylight. Aaron uncannily has relations who live in Reykjavik, who were kind enough to put us up for the week. Dennis and Eyrun live in an apartment in Reykjavik and also have a summer house near Selfoss in the Grimsnes area. Dennis was a wonderful host and tour guide, first taking us to the Blue Lagoon for some much needed R&R ... read more

Got some fancy over the knee length biking pants that have superb 'protection' today. Fit fine under jodphurs. Not cheap but worth every penny I suspect! Starting to believe it is all happening. Browsing in Borders read up on some things to do and see in Reykjavik. If weather kind should be amazing.... read more

Iceland is one of those places that seems far removed from the beaten track. As we flew the red eye north from New York, over snowy Greenland, the brilliant orange sun began to rise over the horizon at 3:30 am. This is, in fact, the land of the midnight sun with only 4 hours of darkness this time of year. Our Iceland Air stewardess was dressed in a 1960s style outfit complete with a pill box hat and it was interesting to listen to her translate their ancient Norse/Viking language into English. We had 4 days to explore Iceland before boarding the Voyager, so even though we had major jet lag, we hit the ground running. We expected cold weather with rain or snow but instead we were pleasantly surprised when the sun was shining and ... read more

The Journey began in Iceland on May 1st 2009, which we quickly discovered was Slaves Day. Reykjavik was a ghost town. We arrived very early in the morning to be greeted by a bitter cold, rustic and intriguing landscape. The drive from the airport to the Travel-Inn Guesthouse took less then an hour but revealed the diversity Iceland had to offer. Our First day was spent wandering around Reykjavik like zombies until our hostel room was ready. After not sleeping for 24 hours a supermarket counter quickly became a reasonable place for a nap. Dan's first meal in Iceland was a hot dog - which we soon discovered was one of their national foods. We specifically arranged for a room with a kitchen, but found out it was cheaper to eat out then cook for ourselves ... read more

30th April We made our way to Heathrow via the tube. It couldn’t have been easier. Once at the airport, we grabbed a tasty lunch and before we knew it, we were flying over Scotland and heading the furthest North either of us have been. Once we had got our bags back, we headed outside to catch a 50km bus ride to Reykjavik. It was so cold that our exhalation was visible; it went right to my bones and to think that summer is nearly here. Weirdly, the bus station in Reykjavik was in the middle of nowhere and there was only one bus company. We had no idea what was going to happen. We disembarked off the big coach only to climb onto a minibus and the driver said something in Icelandic to which ... read more

Hi there. Hope this reaches you well. Firstly, congratulations to Jeremy who's wife is expecting. All the best. We have been busy since our last blog. Weve walked around Regents Park on a beautiful spring day, the best spring weather I can remember. Ive been to the RAF museum and we've both been to the V&A museum and London Transport museum. We managed to get to the National portrait museum to see the life works of Picasso which was very interesting and went to Trafalgar square for the Chinese new Year. We have also managed to catch up with Kris Hannon and family who have returned from NZ back to Austria. Just recently, we have been to Iceland for Easter. It was very cold and expensive. Lost of hot pools and lava fields. The people were ... read more

Iceland is awesome. Anyone new to the region can’t help but be astonished by the dramatic, volatile landscape and the scenic offerings it contains. It’s a Lord of the Rings -eque white washed desert with an array of stunning vistas. Anything from azul-blue jagged glaziers, snow capped peaks and thundering wide waterfalls high up in the silent mountains... to stark deep canyons, miles of lava fields and picturesque rivers running between the isolated fishing villages. Rising up on every horizon are natural chimneys of steam smoking up out of the geothermic land. A remarkable sight that inspired the first Norwegian settlers in the 9th century to name this island’s capital, Reykjavik, (the Icelandic translation literally meaning ’Smoky Bay’). You really do feel like you’re getting close to the edge of the world. ... Whether or not ... read more
