Full Blog on Blogger The sun sinks through the clouds on the horizon, bringing pink dusk to the small iceburgs dotting the ocean below. Minutes later we land on a strip in the scrubby green landscape. "Welcome to Iceland. The time is 20 to 12." Pause. "Midnight." The passengers smile at each other. The dusk lights the fields and ocean glimpses on the 40 minute bus ride to Reykjavik. My Icelandic friend from a Venezuelan adventure, Gudrun Helga (we call her Helga because we are so horrible at pronouncing her whole name) picks us up at the bus depot for another 90 minute ride north to her home, arriving at 4am at Bifrost University.... read more

After a good night's sleep, we are woken up by the lawnmower, cutting the grass all around us. When we open the tent, it turns out that we are the last ones on the campground! No need to rush though, first we have some breakfast and the ever-important cup of coffee, before we start packing up again and get ready for our first full day of cycling after the break. The road leads south along the same road the bus brought us yesterday. The scenery isn't too impressive - mostly fields, and pastures, alternating between cows, horses, and sheep. The wind isn't on our side today, and by the time we reach the ring road, we're almost out of water, but manage to push through to Hella, the next largest town on the way South - ... read more

Another day, another try: the alarm rings at 7, and we drag ourselves out of our sleeping bags. Stefan and Elinborg said something about breakfast last night, but they don't seem to be up for it now - there is no sound in the house. So we pack up, and start moving everything out of the house. We even find the back entrance to the cellar, to get at the bikes. Once everything is loaded up, and the bikes are ready to go, Stefan and Elinborg appear. But time is short, and we really want to catch this bus today - none of us is in the mood for yet another day of Reykjavik! Off we go to the bus station, arrive much too early again, and manage to squeeze our bikes on the bus to ... read more

At $7 per hour, Iceland definitely has the most expensive internet I´ve seen anywhere in the world. For that matter, pretty much everything else is most expensive here too, except for heat, which is free. So we landed on time at 6:00 am and immediately met Bryce and Diu, two Canadians. The Blue Lagoon is right near the airport, so the four of us went there just after landing. It was awesome! And furthermore, I kept thinking that everyone at home who thinks it´s odd why anyone would want to travel to Iceland would LOVE it! It´s a huge naturally heated lake (like 90 degrees year round) with therapeutic minerals in it. They also have steam rooms and stuff like that. The only bad thing is the sulfur smell. We spent the whole day there because ... read more

Good stuff! In the morning, I feel a lot better, and we decide to try to catch the 8:30 bus to Geysir, and continue our bike tour there. So - everything packed up quickly, a quick dash downstairs for breakfast, handing over waaay too much money for the hotel, and off to the bus station we go. We arrive half an hour early - plenty of time to buy the tickets and get the bikes on the bus...but what's that noise in my rear wheel? The wheel's had me worried for a while now: as Mr. Do-Everything-Myself, I had to build it up myself, and must not have pulled the spokes tight enough, so the wheel has been running quite noisily for a while. But today, things seem worse. And indeed - a quick check shows ... read more

Iceland is cold and always sunny, well at least while we were there. On our first day we arrived at 7am and weren't able to check into our hotel until 1pm. So, we were very tired and had some time to kill. Since we were so cold and already wet from the rain we decided to go to the pool. In Iceland all the water is heated by geothermal energy. The pool was no exception. The water in the different pools varied in temperature and was the best way to spend our first day in Iceland. Day two was spend whale watching and we were fortunate to have nice, sunny weather. Although it was impossible to escape the cold and on a boat it's especially difficult. We did see a few whales, they were all of ... read more

Not much happening today...I manage to drag myself out of bed for some breakfast, aided by Paracetamol. While I spend most of the rest of the day sleeping, Nadine is out in Reykjavik, buying food and checking out the pool. In the evening, I start feeling slightly better, and we go for a small walk around town - again, helped by some paracetamol. Here's to hoping this whole mess will be better tomorrow morning!... read more

When going to bed last night, I was already feeling quite cold, and it doesn't get better all night. When I wake up in the morning, I'm still shivering, and it turns out that I have a fever...just perfect, exactly what I need on a bike tour! Spending another night in the tent next to the cold lake is not an option, so after some thinking, we decide to check into a nearby hotel, and hope to be able to continue cycling tomorrow. Unfortunately, the only hotel close by is the Valhöll, and it's quite luxurious, and thus expensive. Through a special deal we are able to spend one night there, and only spend all our money (at the normal rates, we would not have been able to afford the night at all). I drag myself ... read more

Day 4: Thursday, June 25, 2009 REYKJAVIK, ICELAND Fell in and out of sleep all night. It was light all night, but that wasn't it. Up at 6 am. Took shower. water smelled a little of sulfer. Was told at power plant yesterday that even when they heat cold water, they add sulfer to remove oxygen so as to kill off any organisms that might be in the water. Had breakfast just after 7 am. Breakfast was continental and typically european, consisting of a couple types of cereals, milk, juice, yogarts, lunch meat, cheese slices, some sliced fruits, and some different breads. It was ok. I had yogart over cornflakes (something I picked up in Austria), orange juice, bread, and an orange wedge. About the time I was finishing, others started to appear. It was very ... read more

Late morning, the sun (!) wakes us, and we crawl out of our tent for some breakfast and coffee. Using the "super special" burning liquid bought in an outdoor shop in Reykjavik almost sets the tent on fire, because it produces a high flame, and all efforts to extinguish or control the size of the flame are in vain. Additionally, it completely covers all cookware involved in a thick layer of black soot. Quality stuff! Just for reference, if you own a Trangia using liquid fuel and you value your life, do not use Primus PowerFuel! To extinguish the flame, we needed to resort to using some of the moss around us. Yes, it's that bad! The coffee is still ok, and we pack up and continue on towards Ƥingvellir, the field between the European and ... read more
