WE FINALLY GOT TO SEE THEM! On the night of our return to Reykjavik from our drive along the south coast of Iceland, we were at our hostel when we heard a group of school students running around outside in mad hysteria, screaming that they could see the Northern Lights. Realising that we did not have to return our hire car until the following morning, we decided to drive to a nearby national park to view this phenomenon outside of the city's glow. As we emerged from the front door of the hostel, I was stopped dead in my tracks by the sweeping arcs of green light that were drifting across the night sky. I was flabbergasted that we could actually see them this clearly from the city and it was with much excitement that we ... read more

This time two days ago we set out for Iceland from Heathrow (after another typical delay on that hopeless airport's behalf), which I was more than a little excited about after spending two months teaching a selection of the finest human beings that Essex has to offer... We arrived at our lodgings around three o'clock in the morning, so we just crashed into bed at the Reykjavik City Hostel and hoped to catch a few zzzz's before our first full day on this fascinating island. We managed to sneak in roughly four hours of sleep before the chainsaw snorer whom we shared our dorm with got the better of me and I arose to embrace the day. Our first plan was to obtain some breakfast, so we caught a bus into the middle of the city ... read more

Hi people Haven't blogged in a while. Haven't traveled in while. Icelands economic state doesn't offer you much possibility to travel in the near future. Hopefully I will though before to long. Went to lreland and NY earlier this year. Will tell you all about it later. In the meanwhile I'll stay at home and play my guitar. bye Rósa... read more

Despite three tough grad-level midterms looming in the coming week, 31 classmates and I decided to take advantage of a three day Columbus Day weekend and trek to Iceland for a much needed break. After landing at 6:30AM and making the 45 minutes drive from Keflavik airport to Reykjavík amidst a cloudy sunrise, we were greeted in our hotel lobby with what we were to find out was a ubiquitous odor of rotten egg in many buildings. Referred to as “Iceland perfume”, the sulfur in the pipes keeps the briny hot water pulled from hot springs and pumped into buildings across the island from oxidizing. Day 1: Welcome to Iceland Driving Tour Less than an hour after checking in, we were on our tour bus, driving around Reykjavík, which is actually quite small. We stopped off ... read more

Ég gisti heima hjá einhverjum frá AIESEC ... read more

I am a Viking. My hands of those of Thor god of Thunder. My wit is srpy like that Loki. My blood pulses through my veins by decree of Oden. When I leave this earth, I will spend eternity in the glorious forever of epic feast and never-ending battle that is Valhalla. Unfortunately, i was born in the wrong century (and with the wrong physique, i could be helmet horn polisher at best). Current international law prevents the psychotic Berzerker rampage of bloodshed that my ancestors made famous. Nowadays it's just a very quick way to get kicked out of the Walmart Sporting Goods Section. You can't travel even with the meagerest of battleaxes (not even if you check it). I just want to pillage one thing in my damn life. Is that so much to ... read more

We woke up this morning fully recovered, well, more or less, from our whale watching expedition. Our flight wasn't until much later in the day so there was still time to do some sightseeing in the morning. We decided to head for somthing that was warm and dry and firmly on solid ground so we set off for the Saga Museum in the Perlan. The walk there proved to be interesting. We walked along the main road and couldn't quite believe how completely empty it was. A main road in a capital city and there was no-one in sight. After about 15 minutes we were relived to see a couple of cars drive past - we weren't the only people in the entire of Reykjavík after all!! The walk to the Perlan proved to be quite ... read more

Finally arrived full circle in Reykjavik, the least icy and least firey place in Iceland, having travelled the entire way around the coast of Iceland. I'm ashamed to say it was a huge relief to see civilisation again! However stunning the Icelandic countryside is (and it really is!) it's slightly unnerving to be able to go all day without seeing another living soul and nothing but vast expanses of nothingness. Reykjavik didn't seem as pleased as we were to see it and decided to be as grey and overcast as every other day had been so far. The town was also completely silent due to the fact the marathon was being run so the majority of the centre of the city was closed. Even so, we made it to Reykjavik Cathedral which looks just as modern ... read more

We came full circle today as we travelled back to Reykjavík. The city was silent as we arrived. The marathon was on so presumably all the locals were gathered along certian streets. We had a whistle stop tour of the world's most northerly capital. Established by the Norse chieftan Ingolfur Amarson in around 874 CE the real development of Reykjavík began in the late 18th century. It currently has a population of about 120,000 with more than 200,000 living in the Greater Reykjavík Area. Reykjavík is also unusual in that most of the homes and businesses are heated by natural geothermal water. We began our very brief tour with a visit to Hallgrímskirkja, a Lutheran parish church which is the fourth tallest architectural structure in Iceland measuring 74.5 metres in height. State Architect Guðjón Samúelsson's design ... read more

Our second to last day saw us returning to the capital. Yes it still looked as grey as ever. We drove under the Hvalfjordur tunnel to get there. Due to the Iceland marathon being on we only had a very short tour of the town which meant basically a quick look at the cathedral and a very quick tour of the 'Perlan.' After a quiet afternoon sorting out we went out the the harbour for our great 'whale watching adventure.' Now I don't like boats. I'm OK in my own canoe but put me in anything larger than that and my balance does wierd things. We were told by going out at 5 pm we had a good chance of seeing whales. The commentary was good and we went up on deck to have a good ... read more
