Today was meant to be an early start but that crashed and burned. Rang the kids while eating breakfast and chatted for a while. Finally got away after deciding which way to go considering the wind forecast. Put some fuel in to keep us safe and headed for the Snaefellsnes peninsula. Road took us onto a gravel road again. No real dramas but lots of new bitumen road being built along with bridges. This meant some slow patches but all in all good moving. Today we had lots of good scenery, plenty of waterfalls in the hills as well as snow not far away in some parts. Lots of cars stopped so we stopped. Great views of a big town across the water. A medium sized fishing boat wrecked on the rocks in front of us ... read more

Velrybu? Taky. Stado delfinu? Urcite! Slona? Ze vahas... Dinosaura? To uz musite prestat hulit marjanku. Ale pekne poporade. Rano jsme znovu prosli Hveravellirskou geotermalni oblast, protoze bylo vice svetla a hlavne Katka si tentokrat uz vzala fotak. Pak jsme absolvovali zdejsi turisticky okruh k jeskyni (=mensi dira v zemi) a kopecku (=prekvapive polokulovita vec, ked se lave taktak nepodarilo prorazit povrchovou vrstvu). Katka me pustila za volan ... read more

May as well admit it now, no Northern Lights. During the week before we arrived there was considerable solar activity and thus extensive Northern Lights. However, it was stormy the entire time so no one in Iceland saw anything. We had very good weather, at least in terms of storms, and very few clouds after the first day, but no solar activity to speak of-thus no lighting of the atmosphere. Oh well, we did see lots and lots of waterfalls, most of which were full of ice. Yes this is a cold country. Temps never rose above freezing anywhere, and when combined with the wind, it was cold...very cold. Okay, after the pain of the previous blog we spent a couple of days at a "horse farm". BB was out and about each morning petting "my ... read more

Amazing Iceland 3 of 3 A whale of a time! Low cloud greeted us once again this morning, but there are occasional breaks as we backtrack northwards to Egilsstadir and take the gravel track 70 km out to Dyrfjoll and the cliffs at Hafnartangi to check out the puffins! Parts of this road are now surfaced, winding, ever winding, through lush green moorland, between gushing rivers and snow-topped mountains. Sure, it’s a long way out and a long way back but there’s a reward for the effort. A short-eared owl performed its graceful flight for us, whimbrel and redshank called, red-necked phalarope danced around in circles in pools, harlequin ducks rode the rushing rivers and whooper swans grazed the marshes en route. Wow! And finally, the cliffs: thousands of jovial puffins in rafts on the water ... read more

Palattiin takaisin. Syötiin hotellin ravintolassa, minä lammaskeittoa ja Jorma pitsaa. Paikan pitäjällä oli ... read more

Today was a relatively lazy until late afternoon. This morning we moved on, slowly making our way down to the south coast and, as it was a relatively short journey for us compared to some of our adventures such as those in Africa, we took a detour on a coastal road on the way back to Bourganes. This was well-worthwhile as the scenery was beautiful: meadows, beaches and little inlets with lots of wildflowers and water birds. This time upon arrival in Bourganes we chose a different restaurant for lunch: it’s good to spread the love around and the food was lovely. Our new hotel for the evening is the Glymur close to a fjord, giving rise to some dramatic landscapes. We decided to go for a drive and this was a little disappointing at first ... read more

We made it to Borgarnes yesterday after landing at Keflavik airport and renting a used car... Gary found a company that rents used cars. The one we have been assigned is a 10+ year old Nissan. It will definitely do the trip and costs about 1/2 of a regular rental car. On the way here we saw some great scenery especially as we went around Hvalfjordur with one way bridges and almost no traffic. The folks that are out and about are mostly interested in the beauty and probably taking a few hikes. We arrived in Borgarnes, found our hostel and did some exploring. We found a great little museum, The Settlement Center, that discusses the settlement of Iceland. It had an audio guide that walked you through the various small rooms. But by then jet ... read more

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=maKAzaoBks8 We were heading back to Reykjavik from Akureyri in a roundabout way as we still had two days left. The drive took us across northern Iceland travelling west and then down the western coast. Throughout this portion of the drive we noticed that decorating many of the deserted farmhouses was what appeared to be Banksy graffiti! Not too far after setting off we were distracted by signs for a seal museum, we weren’t sure what to expect from this i.e. whether it would have anything to do with seal hunting. We weren’t particularly bothered with the seal museum but we had read that seals could be seen off the coast nearby to the museum. This did result in a 2 hour detour across quite rough gravel roads but we had plenty of time. After what ... read more
