Now that the new dinghy was delivered in the afternoon the day we planned to leave, we could get started again in our travels to our final destination for this season, Cartagena, Spain. It was delivered later in the day than we had hoped, so did not have time to give it a "test drive" or even get it set up in the harness for hooking it into the davits on the stern of the boat so we loaded it on the deck of Tsamaya and will deal with getting it moved to the stern sometime on our travels The important thing was getting the new one and having the old one removed so we didn't have to deal with it. That done, we were going to be on our way again. May 23 - First ... read more

Santorini is probably the most spectacular island in Greece and a geologic wonder. Several of the villages we visited (eg. Fira, Oia, Akrotiri) sit next to cliffs atop the caldera and offer spectacular views of the crater created from a 16th-century BC volcanic eruption. According to archaeologists, the first human presence on the island dates back to the Neolithic Period. Santorini hosted a significant civilization around 3600 BC. Discoveries made near Akrotiri revealed the existence of an ancient Minoan colony. The settlement was similar to those found on the island of Crete (like Knossos), with many wall ornaments and pottery depicting naturalistic landscapes of animals and humans of the same ancient Minoan style. In ancient times, Santorini Island was known as Strongili, which means ... read more

It's the last day of our holiday, so the last chance for Baklava for breakfast, the last chance to chill by the pool and the last chance to see any remaining sights in Santorini. My wife and daughter opted for the middle of those three options. I opted for the other two. The last item on my checklist from earlier in the week (see ) was the walk up the trail to the ruins of Ancient Thera, which could be reached by foot from Perissa, although it is a particularly arduous walk. I set off as soon as we had had breakfast, so as to be back before it got too hot, and I headed up the steep, rocky path. It took about half any hour to get up to the entrance to the ruins and ... read more

Tinos is a Greek island located in the Cyclades archipelago within the Aegean Sea. The closest islands are Andros, Delos, and Mykonos. Tinos is famous amongst Greeks for the Church of Panagia Evangelistria, with its reputedly miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary. As a result, Tinos is also the center of a pilgrimage that takes place annually on August 15th (the date of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary). Devotees crawl on their hands and knees from the ferry port all the way up to the church (~800m). Jacqueline and I did visit the Panagia Evangelistria church in Tinos (town) but spent most of our time at/near Laouti Beach near our airBnB. It was a very quiet island, and a nice place to relax.... read more

I had booked the Archaeological Bus Tour for today, so after a Baklava breakfast (and today there was also tiramisu that was also bizarrely added to my breakfast selection) I left my wife and daughter for the day. They had already planned their day without me on the beach, by the pool and getting a massage each. It turned out that even the tour buses leave early yet, so luckily I've learned now and always get to bus stops at least 15 minutes before I need to. It was a small shuttle type bus to take us (there were three of us) to the main meeting point. We were dropped in the middle of nowhere with just an instruction to wait for Bus 19. After three quarters of an hour and lots of other busses coming ... read more

I got up early for the morning sunrise as per usual, but more out of habit rather than there being any particular Perissa setting I wanted to photograph. There wasn't really anything to photograph, but to be fair it was pleasant, peaceful, there were no crowds, no rivalry for the best positions and actually just great to watch and enjoy it. Perissa is very different from Oia in ways that are good and bad. Breakfast was a buffet in the hotel restaurant, so after four mornings of being able to just go out onto our terrace when breakfast arrived like slobs, wearing what we liked and in whatever state we liked, this morning we would need to be in some sort of semi-presentable condition before going down. The buffet included one of my Greek favourite, Baklava. ... read more

It didn't seem quite so busy first thing in the morning, but there would a lot of very well dressed couples out, with the professional local Greek photographers. There was no messing around with them, they went straight to where they wanted to regardless of the influencers or the photographers that might already be there. There were particularly a lot of wedding couples, presumably as it's Sunday today. I would guess that they are actually getting married here, but it's also possible that they have just come for the photographs. Everyone was arguing with a Japanese couple who were monopolising one location and refusing to let anyone else have a turn. After relaxing by the windmill and reading my book for a while it was turning into a beautiful day, with a deep blue sky and ... read more

I was up early yet again. After the washout that was yesterday (see ) I opened the door and was greeted by the most amazing sight. There was the most intense orange moon low over the sea straight in front of me. It didn't last long and was fading by the second. If I'd have been a few minutes later, I would have missed it. In the excitement, I accidentally woke my wife up so she came to find out what all the fuss was about. I set off to some of the usual, popular locations on the expectation that I wouldn't have to worry about any queues. I was wrong. I guess I'm just too used to having everywhere to myself at this time in the morning or if there are other photographers there, we ... read more

I woke up again at 5.00am for the sunrise, but that was most definitely not going to happen. I opened the door to discover that it was pouring with rain. I closed the door and went back to bed. We all surfaced when it was time for breakfast, which we order the night before and then it's delivered to us. It was a bit of a rush to get ready as we didn't want it to arrive when we were looking like complete slobs. We needn't have worried though as a rep on a previous holiday had told us that the Greek islands all run according to GMT or rather Greek Maybe Time. I should have just slept in as the rain had actually been forecasted, so our plan for today was to get the bus ... read more

Lindos – May 21, 2023 We had heard that the harbor at Lindos was an excellent stop along the coast of the island of Rhodes so one of our many plans was to stop there for a night and explore the Acropolis of Lindos. As always, plans must remain fluid and with our purchase of a new dinghy and waiting for the delivery of it until Monday, we found that there was a bus that we could take to Lindos. This now gave us the flexibility of being able to sail past Lindos and get further down the island when we leave the Rhodes marina. With this in mind we had a new plan. When we checked the bus schedule, we found that there was a bus that would leave Rhodes at 6:45AM and get us ... read more
