Background: Greece achieved its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1829. During the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, it gradually added neighboring islands and territories, most with Greek-speaking populations. In World War II, Greece was first invaded by Italy (1940) and subsequently occupied by Germany (1941-44); fighting endured in a protracted civil war between royalist supporters of the king and communist rebels. Following the latter's defeat in 1949, Greece was able to join NATO in 1952. A military dictatorship, which in 1967 suspended many political liberties and forced the king to flee the country, lasted seven years. The 1974 democratic elections and a referendum created a parliamentary republic and abolished the monarchy. Greece joined the European Community or EC in 1981 (which became the EU in 1992); it became the 12th member of the euro zone in 2001.

Rhodes Old Town
Rhodes Old Town
I really liked the crumbling walls, faded wooden doors and bright flowers. Every street looks like this!
We had a little holiday in Rhodes at the beginning of September to coencide with Lara's Google AGM. We stayed in Ixia, near Rhodes town for one week and then in Lindos for the second week. It was a really relaxing holiday in which we did nothing at all exciting. Except watch a whole season of Prison Break on DVD! Check out the snaps. [View Full Entry]

034 - Greece - Santorini, Hydra, and Athens 10/21/08 - 11/25/08 Picture Perfect written by Hannah The question on everyone's mind when we left San Diego for parts unknown was “when will we see you again?”, especially so for my mom. After 9 months of waiting to see where we could meet she finally 'sacrificed' and bought her ticket for Greece. Those who know me will say I live a pretty full life and am involved in many different things, well, I learned it from my mom, and true to form she had 1,001 things to do before she jumped on [View Full Entry]

Day 13 and 14 Good Morning…it’s another beautiful morning here in Paradise at Kiotaro, our last day here, and though we are sorry to leave in a way we are looking forward to our Grand Adventure aboard the Ferry to Crete. Now where was I? Ah yes, yesterday. It was jammies to bathing suits day again. We will hopefully have our clean clothes back today and I am now starting to believe Anna really will iron our things. She dries stuff on a clothes line and her washing machine is outside under a little canopy; she even has one there from [View Full Entry]

Gord finally got to see Socrates St without all the shops and confusion. We've never checked into a hotel in the day time for a 5 hour stay....felt kinda illicit!!!
Attempting to catch the *&$%# Ferry to Crete “I tell you no take the feddy, the feddies here is sheet.” From Louisa, the morning after the night from hell. It’s not like we weren’t warned…every reference by locals to our taking the ferry to Crete was accompanied by a smirk and “eef the boat show up…” I have restrained myself from editing my last blog in hindsight, where I wrote about being so excited about our Grand Adventure! We arrived back in Old Town around 7 and headed for our fav little place the Walk Inn for a shared p [View Full Entry]

Hello loved ones and friends, Well, once again I find myself far, far behind on this blog. It's procrastination at its best, people. Now I am going to tell you about the best weekend we have had yet in Greece. Santorini Island...for all of you who might not know what I am talking about, think the place where they filmed Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and Mamma Mia. We actually think we found the house where the Sisterhood was filmed. No big deal. Actually, we were freaking out, we were so excited. I think the guys were a little embarrassed to [View Full Entry]

Good Afternoon from Kiotari, We picked up our rental car outside the main entrance in Rodos and, after some fierce negotiations, managed to pay the price we were originally told! We like this car better, the gear shift is better placed…here’s hoping it will make for better shifting!!! Headed south from Rodos Old Town (from now on I’ll call it just Rodos, as the people here do) and immediately felt better for getting out of town! Drove for about 30 km’s and stopped for lunch in a little town that offered all sorts of British “fry-ups” on the menus. [View Full Entry]

The Courtyard of Hotel Isole...it was such a quiet place during the day. In the evenings, most guests hang out at the bar before going out to dinner around 8.
Day 9, 10 & 11.5 I got the brainwave to try writing this blog in Word then copy and pasting into the blog. Tried it out last night and it works. This way I can write a little each morning when I am at my most coherent. It’s hard to remember some things about a place, especially when you are already somewhere else and trying to write like you aren’t! It makes me laugh because my Word program doesn’t recognize “blog” as a valid word…does anyone know what blog actually means? I am sitting on the terrace outside our studio; I [View Full Entry]

Aegean Dreams in Greece Catching up with our travelers as their plane descends into Athens, Greece shortly after midnight. Arriving in the middle of the night presents its own set of difficulties, such as, transportation and finding a reasonable place to stay. Thinking ahead, we had booked a room on-line before we departed to eliminate at least one of the issues. However, the transportation issue was looking like a daunting task. We had two choices, take a taxi from the airport which was going to cost more than a place to stay, or, try to navigate our way there on the [View Full Entry]

I'm including a few places in this entry because I didn't really do too much there. I actually didn't even get off the ship in Mykonos, Greece, but I took some great pictures from the ship. A cruise ship is actually and excellent vantage point for landscape or panoramic shots. You're elevated enough and far away enough to get quite a bit. So I have a lot of those kinds of pictures. That's the first thing I do when we get into port is head out on deck to see what kind of pictures I can get. So anyway, Kusadasi, Turkey [View Full Entry]
