Hello to all the Canucks back at home and abroad! It sounds like Vancouver Island had a fantastic long weekend, with great weather to match a great celebration…not a bad way to kick off the summer! Well, even though we’ve been enjoying summer weather for the last 6 months, we still showed our “true north strong and free” pride yesterday and educated the Greeks in Canadiana. No we did not have a war of independence with the British or the French; No we are not American; No we do not all speak French; No we do not sound like Australians; and Yes we do love our country and on July 1st we celebrate it loud and proud!!! Canada Day, for Kelsey and I, started off by singing “Oh Canada” while we were still in bed. (Seriously!) ... read more

Ya sas (Hello) Friends & Family...

So we have been a little pathetic with the blogs lately and the only explanation I can provide is that the Greek lifestyle starts alot later in the day and ends ridiculously early in the morning which means the hangovers are much more frequent which translates to minimal time spent on the computer... and you know me, it's hard to say "no" to a late night glass of wine… so you can see the problem!!!

Dan and I have been busy settling into Greek island life... which to be honest involves ALOT of socializing over a glass of Ouzo, ALOT of late nights out on the town (the Greeks don’t even leave for the bar until 1:00am and don’t get home until the sun comes up), ALOT of late ... read more

Island hopping through the Greek islands, it's a dirty job but someone has to do it! We are struggling through this task with our first stop in Rhodes. It remains pretty much the same from visit to visit. This stop was most pleasant with lovely spring weather and reduced tourist crowds. The Old Town is charming and the New Town seems to be growing. We did all of the standard tourist stops to the Avenue of the Knights, the Palace of the Grand Master, the Square for the Jewish Martyrs, and the main Plaka. We ate lots of Greek Salads, Moussaka, and Gyros and loved every mouthful. One memorable sight, near the harbor, was the large dog riding on a motor bike with his owner along the main harbor drive. The dog didn't seem to have ... read more

I'm at the third item in the title. We have an afternoon-long stopover here in Rhodes town, so it's a good opportunity to hit the post office, laundromat, internet cafe, etc. So on Monday evening we arrived in Nisyros and I gotta say that I misrepresented it in my earlier posting; It's not an apocalyptic rock spire jutting out of the sea with a measly peasantry ekeing out an existence on seaweed and goat-milk/meat, which is kind of what I'd pictured in my head, the only pictures I'd seen being those of the volcano proper, which I will get to. So we arrived and it was really nice. Hills, lots of vegetation, the biggest paddle-cacti I'd seen yet (I will post pictures of these), and a nice little town with whitewashed, blocky houses, and touristed enough ... read more

I thought I'd detail another aspect of Rhodes. The old town of Rhodes is encircled by these tall, thick stone walls built to repel any kind of siege. The old town is like a fortress. Kathleena and I were walking and I happened to see a short row of square holes through the wall. I could see vegetation through the holes and they were big enough for me to crawl through without any squirming or fuss. So I did, and found myself in an arched little space close to the ground. I stuck my head out and, seeing no video cameras, crept out. I was in the space between a tower and the wall surrounding it. There were grass and flowers growing wild everywhere, just as if no-one ever went back there. I walked along that ... read more

So here I am in the old town of Rhodes, which is the biggest, most well-preserved medieval town currently inhabited in Europe. It is incredible. Narrow streets paved with small round stones standing up very close together; storefronts that look exactly like a house; Byzantine, Greek, and Turkish architecture everywhere. We arrived here late on Thursday night after a wavey ferry ride and got lost for an hour in the labyrinthine Old Town. Our pension owner was kind enough to wait up for us, and as the two-bed room with a shared bathroom we'd reserved was out of comission, we got a room with a big double bed and its own bathroom, for the same price. Nice. The place we're at is very nice; Pink Elephant Pension. (A pension is like an inn; the ones I've ... read more

Rhodes was definately a little different than I expected. In Athens we were two tourists surrounded by Athenians, in Rhodes we were two Canadian tourists surrounded by tons of German and British tourists. I was expecting this island to be less touristy than Athens but it is actually more so. We have been busy since we last wrote. On Friday we explored the Old Town of Rhodes. The town is surrounded by medieval fortress walls that are still pretty intact. The center of town contains the Palace of the Grand Masters, the clock tower, bridges, many gates (entrances to the town), and many narrow cobblestone alleyways. It was fun to walk around the old town and picture what it was like to live there all those years ago. The most interesting part is that people still ... read more

We arrived in Rhodes yesterday, luckily with all our baggage too! It is pretty nice weather here, around 20 but the wind is very strong and cold, especially by the ocean. We are staying in a village on the western side of Rhodes called Kremasti. Our hotel is very nice, we have a kitchenette with hot plates, fridge and sink. We also have a balcony, it is much larger than our last hotel room. Today, we walked down to the beach and rented chairs from a charming greek man, he was busy fixing up his beach cafe for the 'real' busy tourist season. We did manage to get some sun although it was very windy, I think I may be quite burnt tomorrow. We tried to go in the water but it was very cold and ... read more

Yesterday we arrived in Kusadasi Turkey. We had a guided tour of the ancient city of Ephesus, which was the first city to have a running water system. The tour was all walking downhill, we have taken many pictures of everything! Our driver dropped us off at the top, and picked us up some two hours later, the design of the city was very cool. We also visited the temple of Artemis, which is one of the seven ancient wonders of the world, now just one standing column and a big pile of marble pieces. Now onto another day, after a slow (14 knot cruise) through the Greek archipelago we have docked on the island of Rhodes, a small but beautiful island, as the ship docked this morning the rain started to fall, heavy at times, ... read more

As we last left you, we were trying to figure out which of us would drive the island's cliffs while severely impaired. Geri won the reflex contest and I got into the passenger seat with a bump on my head. I don't know why she had to use a brick for the reflex test....anyway, we drove down the Western coast of Rhodes along the ocean on a cliffside drive. We stopped at an ancient ruin city, and unlike anywhere else we have ever seen, were allowed to climb all over it. So we went into a Hellenistic era house, walked down the Hellenistic main street and put our hands all over anything old. We then kept driving to get to a winery that I wanted to tour, but much like everything else here off season, the ... read more
