From Patmos, the island of the Apocalypse, we left the island in the evening and woke up to find ourselves in Rhodes. Now, this I've got to say. I wasn't prepared for Rhodes. Perhaps because all this time, I was more fascinated by the more popular islands like Mykonos or Santorini. All I knew about Rhodes was some history lesson marking the Colossus of Rhodes as one of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World. But an earthquake more than 2,200 years ago wiped out this ancient bronze statue that stood by the harbor, so there is really just a memory, if not a legend or myth about this world famous landmark. Of more "recent" history is the flight of the Knights to Rhodes during the Medieval period, only to be chased out once more by ... read more

We then made our way to Rhodes to stay for 3 nights. This is such a super cool city, on the Coast there is an old medieval city with huge walls and everything that people actually still live in! the buildings and houses and so cool, and these tiny little cobblestone streets teach you to jump in a doorway FAST if a car is coming towards you! We met another Canadian on the Ferry, so with him we wandered the streets of the old city trying to find a hostel. We ended up getting completely lost and stumbling into a nice hotel, when we asked about the price it was SO CHEAP! so we stayed in this amazing room! That day we explored the old city, getting lost in the crazy confusing streets and trying to ... read more

Rhodes was not what I envisioned a Greek island to look like. We did not have specific plans today, other than to check out old town. Rhodes old town is a walled in medieval city with cobblestone streets and old and restored buildings. And as a typical tourist trap, lots of little shops and cafes. We had a map, but the map had the names in English and the signs on the buildings with the street names were in Greek. So we got lost. But it was ok, because we ended up finding some interesting places. We walked up the stairs of one museum (I don't remember the name) and found some really cool black and white mosaic floors, patios and rooms. I think it was a hospital at one time. When we finally found the ... read more

We had a little holiday in Rhodes at the beginning of September to coencide with Lara's Google AGM. We stayed in Ixia, near Rhodes town for one week and then in Lindos for the second week. It was a really relaxing holiday in which we did nothing at all exciting. Except watch a whole season of Prison Break on DVD! Check out the snaps.... read more

Day 13 and 14 Good Morning…it’s another beautiful morning here in Paradise at Kiotaro, our last day here, and though we are sorry to leave in a way we are looking forward to our Grand Adventure aboard the Ferry to Crete. Now where was I? Ah yes, yesterday. It was jammies to bathing suits day again. We will hopefully have our clean clothes back today and I am now starting to believe Anna really will iron our things. She dries stuff on a clothes line and her washing machine is outside under a little canopy; she even has one there from Canada! We hit the beach about 10 and I swam for a while, floated for a while, swam some more, you get the picture. Gord continued his snorkeling, and I went back to the room ... read more

Attempting to catch the *&$%# Ferry to Crete “I tell you no take the feddy, the feddies here is sheet.” From Louisa, the morning after the night from hell. It’s not like we weren’t warned…every reference by locals to our taking the ferry to Crete was accompanied by a smirk and “eef the boat show up…” I have restrained myself from editing my last blog in hindsight, where I wrote about being so excited about our Grand Adventure! We arrived back in Old Town around 7 and headed for our fav little place the Walk Inn for a shared plate of Pasta Carbonara and Greek Salad. I posted only one blog and decided it was much more interesting to chat with the barkeep Sophia than send another blog to you! Gord had departed to deliver our ... read more

Good Afternoon from Kiotari, We picked up our rental car outside the main entrance in Rodos and, after some fierce negotiations, managed to pay the price we were originally told! We like this car better, the gear shift is better placed…here’s hoping it will make for better shifting!!! Headed south from Rodos Old Town (from now on I’ll call it just Rodos, as the people here do) and immediately felt better for getting out of town! Drove for about 30 km’s and stopped for lunch in a little town that offered all sorts of British “fry-ups” on the menus. We had decided we were just going to wing it in regards to finding our next accommodation… turned off the road toward the water on a whim and stopped at the first place we saw by the ... read more

Day 9, 10 & 11.5 I got the brainwave to try writing this blog in Word then copy and pasting into the blog. Tried it out last night and it works. This way I can write a little each morning when I am at my most coherent. It’s hard to remember some things about a place, especially when you are already somewhere else and trying to write like you aren’t! It makes me laugh because my Word program doesn’t recognize “blog” as a valid word…does anyone know what blog actually means? I am sitting on the terrace outside our studio; I can hear but not see the waves because the sun isn’t up yet. I have decided in this case it is just as well that I am no longer in Rodos (Rhodes) Old Town, because ... read more

Today we do more planning for the time ahead. Tomorrow we will go to Turkey for the day, then we leave to stay on Kastelorizo. Today I found this joint - right next door to the hotel and looking over the beach (and Turkish coast) 100m from the water's edge, with the best internet facilities yet. Inexpensive and real good equipment. It's called Patty's Lounge Bar Restaurant. The bar is also good and I reckon the food will be worth a try.... read more
