Have you ever been to an island where you are the only human? I have. Have you ever been to an island where the only other living creatures are plants, three cats and two pelicans? I have. Have you ever been to Mykonos? I have. Four and a half hour ferry ride from Athens takes you to Mykonos. An island known for its wild and never-ending night life. An island known for its beautiful beaches and gorgeous architecture. An Island known for its conviviality and warmth. If only you are not the only human on it. I had not booked a hotel online and in Athens when the travel agent showed me the only hotel available with rooms, it was a bit below my ‘standards’ which have gone considerably high because of business traveling. ‘I’d find ... read more

Tuesday 21st September 2010 During the night the wind came up for the first time this trip as forecast. We slipped anchor at 6.30am to a breeze of about 15 knots which was very pleasant after all the motoring we have been doing. Mykonos, about 23 miles away was where we were headed as the forecast is for winds up to Beaufort 9 (over 30mph) for the next few days and this island would give us more options if we are delayed by weather. The winds got stronger as we went, reaching over 31 mph and the waves making the boat most uncomfortable. Luckily, Judy had remembered to take her seasickness tablets. By the time we reached Mykonos it was about 1pm, we were all hungry, some a little queasy, and all of us happy to ... read more

Mykonos - the glitz and glamour, the oiled up bodies on the beach, the gays strutting...... all these things are what hits you in the face on Mykonos. I cant really say this island does anything at all for me.... its very plastic and created.... yet, very beautiful. We arrived, and were whisked away to our apartment at Ornos. We had a wander around Mykonos town, through little Venice and planned our next day which was to take a trip to the neighbouring island of Delos. Delos is the hub of the Cyclades islands. It is similar to Ephasus in Turkey. We arrived by boat to the vista of ruins almost 2500 years old. It had a very lucrative slave market in its time which sold up to 10,000 slaves per day!!!! We wandered around the ... read more

We left Paris on the Tuesday morning - the flight was at 1pm so we originally planned on taking the train out to the airport but our host at the bed and breakfast informed us on the Monday night that there was going to be a train and taxi strike in the morning and that we should definitely try to book a taxi. So we booked one for 9am which would leave plenty of time for any traffic delays. Tues morning we are sitting around having a coffee and at about 8.20 she gets a call from the taxi driver saying he was outside and that he had come early due to the strike ha - it ended up only taking 40 minutes to get there which is less than what we had been told is ... read more

CRASH!! CREEEEEEAK! BANG! CREEEAKK! THUD!! CRACK!! Our boat was being thrashed around the Aegean Sea, as if we were in a giant washing machine. Every joint and every wall on-board was creaking, as the Viking Star groaned in pain. Closed doors swung open, only to slam back shut, as if by an angry ghost. The fact I was completely knackered from the swimming, quad-biking, drinking and partying on Santorini was the only reason I was drifting in and out of conciousness, rather than lying with my eyes wide open like just about everyone else on-board. It was still horrible though. The violent swaying of the boat almost threw me off my bed the times I was semi-concious, and the whole night felt like a terrible dream - as if in purgatory, unable to fall asleep yet ... read more

So after a long 9.5 hours direct flight from Toronto my friend and I finally arrived to Athens... we were welcomed by a beautiful scenery of mountains surrounding the airport... right away we were called by our travel agent and was led to the bus... It was a definite short ride from Athens to the port where we climbed aboard a ferry transfer to the island of Mykonos.... Though when my friend and I arrived to the airport at Athens, we found that some vendors were somwhat rude.... maybe it's their own way or so but I have greek friends back home and they've always been nice and very inviting but whatever! I will obviously not let anything like that ruin my trip... I was rather surprise when I noticed a lot of yellow taxis... they ... read more

Mykonos is crazy! A definite party island. We stayed at the mykonian mare hotel in Agios Stefanos. The hotel was lovely...pretty much a white contemorary villa. The decor was beautiful and the pool was even better. We arrived here on Thursday and the first thing we realized was that this was one windy island! Mykonos is all about partying and having a good time whether it's laying out at the beach, going to the center or hitting the bars and clubs at night. What we learned fast was the typical Mykonos day which is to hit the beach at 5 yes I said 5 and everyone hangs out till midnight drinking and dancing at paradise beach. Paradise beach has the nicest clear blue waters. We arrived here pretty early not realizing the time schedule most people ... read more

Many apologies for posting 3 blogs at once today (Mykonos, Kusadasi and Athens), but internet service is inconsistent by satellite... Today is a really easy day for us. Just wandering around Mykonos. Nice day but might rain. We got off the ship at about 9, took a shuttle into town and just started walking along the shore. The vendors were out with wonderful looking produce, artichokes, parsley, tomatoes, cucumbers, lots and lots of fresh vegetables. The fish mongers were selling their fresh fish which can be smelled for a long way off. Everyone is very nice and we're looking forward to a lovely Greek lunch at a taverna on the beachfront. This is the BEST internet cafe so far!! 1 Euro for 15 minutes and just 4 Euros for an hour, hard to beat ;-) Well, ... read more
