Greek Islands 16 to 23 June 2013 1. Mykonos 16 to 18 June 2013 We are in heaven! Perfect weather (hot, cool breezes), hill-top views, killer sunsets, beautiful food, fantastic restaurant, waterside dining for people watching, southern beaches for partying, ATV motorbikes for travelling around (Euro15 for 24 hrs), lovely Greek people, and magnificent accommodation. Do we need anything more – yes, to have the family and friends around would be perfect! We organized our ferry and accommodation after we arrived in Rafina. For anyone who doesn’t want a cruise, fly to Athens, organize the ferry to the islands you want to go to at the Rafina Port – much cheaper! Even if you don’t organize your accommodation on bookings.com before you go, there are many sales people touting for your business re accommodation. So easy. ... read more

Today we boarded our cruise ship. The cruise ship has a swimming pool, multiple restaurants, a gym, shops etc. Although it's sounds amazing it's an old boat so not that flash on the inside but still good for a first time. We headed to Mykonos Island which took about 6 hrs to get there, so we just chilled out on the cruise ship until then. I think I mentioned it in the last post but we only have 13 people in our contiki group. It's a bit too small for me personally but hopefully it will get better. Mykonos is amazing, it kind of looks a bit like Santorini with white houses and blue trims except it is also famous for it's windmills! Our room is tiny but the beds are pretty comfortable. Anyway I won't ... read more

Tuesday May 14th, 2013. Mykonos, Greece The island of Mykonos lies between Tinos, Paros, Naxos and Syros in the Souther Ageean Sea and they all form part of the Cyclades Island Group. It is recently become a very popular tourist destination and the island is served by low cost airlines including Easy Jet from the UK. The island boasts many beautiful beaches with white sand and clear blue waters. Mykonos is a fairly small island - just 33 square kilometres, with only 10,000 year round residents. Settlement on this island dates back to the early part of the 11th century. In the early 20th century the island relied upon fishing as its primary industry but now it is tourism. We had another posh breakfast and then caught the $5 shuttle from the New Port (where the ... read more

Hello again! We arrived in Mykonos in the morning and sailed across in a tender to get to the Port of Mykonos - too many other ships around and not enough berths. After looking up some of the shops - some well known designer shops in some streets and all types of sales on.. could be dangerous so we stopped for an early lunch at a little place in town - we had a traditional Greek Yiros - oh yum...!!! and while we were sitting there another Australian couple came and sat next to us with a yiros too, they'd seen ours and decided they wanted one too. Interesting couple who had been travelling around Europe by train for the past 7 weeks - they regaled us with their stories of train travelling and places they ... read more

Ta... read more

Well we arrived at the port, the boat is more than we had expected amasing. Two full days at sea lounging around the pool - everyone is friendly and anything goes dress code wise lol. So much live entertainment to see and do. Viewed one side of the boat this morning other side tomorrow - huge. Have just arrived at Mykonos beautiful white buildings everywhere it's like a small village. The harbour is full of cruise liners. Our room is great, the sliding door greats us to the wide open Mediterranean. Wi-fi is 24€ on the boat for 35 minutes very expensive. So we are sitting at a wee cafe on shore - free wi-fi, free toilet with cold gin in hand. the sun here is so different here, it's hot but you don't get burnt. ... read more

Arrived in Mykonos by ferry and we were met by our wonderful host Marietta. She took us to our accommodation, then on a tour of the town. The next day, we explored the tiny streets, visited the windmills and then Little Venice, where we found a wonderful bar to take in the sunset. On Sunday, we took the ferry to Delos, a world heritage site, to visit the ruins and climbed the hill to the temple precinct with its wonderful views. On Monday, we spent the day at Paradise beach. After dinner, we returned to our favourite bar, where we watched a singer performing show tunes. Tuesday was a chill out day. In the evening, we met up with a friend and had dinner. We also met one of Mykonos’ famous residents, a pelican. We really ... read more

Athens and Mykonos I arrived in Athens after an uneventful flight, managed to navigate the metro and met a very metro Italian man called Francesco who tried to convince me to go out with him. I found the hostel without any dramas and then searched the Athens directory for a camera store so I coyld buy a battery charger for my camera. Luckily there was one two streets away! Phillip found me a temporary solution and I was happy to depart with the assurance I wouldn't be without my slr for the Greek Islands. He was also an avid traveller and we chatted for nearly an hour about our various adventures. I spent the afternoon walking around town and found a super cute church and although Athens is covered in graffiti and rubbish, I enjoyed my ... read more

Set off in the morning for the 30 minute ferry to Delos. This is by far the most sacred island in the Cyclades, and explains why these islands are called the Cyclades in the first place. Delos is at the very center, is the heart of the islands, which therefore surround it in a large circle (they are placed cyclically around Delos). In relation to mythology, this supposedly was the birthplace of Artemis and Apollo, the goddess of the night, and the god of the sun. Whatever the myth might be, though, you can understand being on Delos how gods of light (the night and the day) could be invented here. There's a certain magic to the light, like it doesn't quite fall right... maybe more at an angle or something. It certainly makes for a ... read more
