Tuesday was amazingly hot. Our landlord, Brian, later said it got to 116 degrees F (well, technically he said it got to like 47 degrees C and Uncle Dan converted it on his computer, but close enough). Unfortunately that was the morning that the power went out. No air conditioning in that weather is pretty miserable, so Uncle Dan went on a walk. Bird watching was a little impossible though because as he said, “the birds were sweating too”. When Aunt Mary finally got up, she called Brian and made sure the air would be back up soon, so we decided to head out and it was cooler when we got back. We went to Nafplion, about half an hour away. I loved it there. Uncle Dan and Aunt Mary even put up with shopping ... read more

That will pretty much some up the visit to the coast of Nafplio. It was just awe inspiring view of the city. Ok, let me back up a minute. So, we caught the bus to the coast which took 2.5 hours and was honestly for most of the trip there, wasn't too scenic. It's not till we got there had some lunch along the coast and decided to to see the fortress that sat ontop of mountain that the view overwhelmed me. It can accessed by taxi, or if you want to take the 800 + steps if you want dare try. Most of you know i would opt for the stairs but our time there was short due to the last bus leaving by 8. So, in the land that created democracy Alicia and I ... read more

Today I was like a Kid in a candy store. I got in to Nafpilo yesturday afternoon and didnt do much site seeing since i was pritty bagged form traveling and carrying my massive backpack as i staggered around the city trying to find a hotel. But i could just see those fortresses staring at me, beconing me to come and bask in the glory of their history. They were hard to miss, one was sitting in the harbour and the other was on top of a mountin and could be seen from anywhere in the city. But today I was rested and ready for the challange. After a harty breakfast and two cups of coffee I was ready to make the climbe and see the mountin fortress that sprawled across the uneven cliffs, almost ... read more

The first trip we took once i was back on my feet was to Nafplio, a port town in the Peloponese about 2.5 hrs out of Athens. It was said to be charming and contain an important fortress. With lots of Venetian architecture, touristy shops, a great walkway by the water, and many places to eat, it was a good place to visit with my family. By myself i think i may have found it a bit too tailored and clean. But we did lot of walking, looking and family posing for pictures shots...... which i havent posted, i like my off the cuff silouette shot best........ The fortress was very cool and as it was the first i visited, i was very impressed (now, having seen several, they're all like "oh ok another fortress"). ... read more

Nafplio is gorgeous. Being able to walk right down to the shore of the Aegean is such a lovely thing. But the architecture here is the my favorite thing about, perhaps. The streets are small and steep and the buildings are old and close together. It's a wonder that cars can get through at all. The word that everyone on the trip has been repeating has been "surreal." The castles, the smells of the Meditarranean, the cute shops, the palm trees and cacti and citrus trees all flourishing side by side and the ever-present mountains in almost every direction- none of us can even believe that he's here. We got into Nafplion yesterday from Athens. It took about 3 hours to drive by bus, with a pit stop near Corinth (The Corinth Canal is beautiful!). It's ... read more

UPDATE: added pictures on 14-January. The move to the Domatia was very wise - even though it's more expensive, we had a good night's sleep and a somewhat warm shower. It seems that the hot water supplies are very low, so we'll try to space our showers out to odd times in the day, in hopes of getting a hot shower! The showers we've found in Greece are generally a very small square space maybe about 3 feet square that only rises up a couple of inches, a shower curtain to pull around yourself, and a faucet with a hand-held hose. Mark attended conference events while Lynne took a daytrip with the families of other conference members. The bus took them past the Corinth canal area, but they stayed in the Peloponnese and headed to Epidaurus. ... read more

Spent a relaxing day in and around Nafplio yesterday. The city was the first capital of Greece, and while it doesn't retain many monuments of that time the Venetian-influenced old town is a wonderful place to spend time. We slept in a bit and promenaded around the narrow streets, window shopping at the many souvenier shops and drinking and eating at the cafes and restaurants. The weather was pleasant (20ish) and the sun was really warm, so in the afternoon we grabbed a couple of cold Mythos (our favourite Greek beer) and headed for a dip. It was a pebble beach, so there weren't any sand castles, but the water was super clear and the view spectacular. We had an interesting incident...Lisa picked up her beer for a sip and got more than she bargained for ... read more
