Spent a relaxing day in and around Nafplio yesterday. The city was the first capital of Greece, and while it doesn't retain many monuments of that time the Venetian-influenced old town is a wonderful place to spend time. We slept in a bit and promenaded around the narrow streets, window shopping at the many souvenier shops and drinking and eating at the cafes and restaurants. The weather was pleasant (20ish) and the sun was really warm, so in the afternoon we grabbed a couple of cold Mythos (our favourite Greek beer) and headed for a dip. It was a pebble beach, so there weren't any sand castles, but the water was super clear and the view spectacular. We had an interesting incident...Lisa picked up her beer for a sip and got more than she bargained for ... read more

We left Kalambaka on the 14th and headed by long, windy, mountain bus south west to Delphi, home of the Oracle. We arrived late and found a hotel with a great view overlooking the Bay of Corinth. We went this morning to the Temples of Apollo and Athena that are on Mount Parnassos, overlooking a beautiful valley. ALOT of climbing though! Ancient Greeks were in shape :) Then it was off by Bus along the coast to Patra and our connection to Nafplia. We have decided to slow down our itinerary a bit and skip Olympus. It was a bit out of our way, and considering neither of us are Olympic Athletes (we know this judging by our climbing lately), we thought it would be best to continue to this port town of Nafplia and partake ... read more

We took the train from Athens to Kalambaka in Central Greece this morning. The thing to see here is what they called "Meteora". They are these geographical phenomenon that are large granite pinnacles shooting 600 m straight up in the air. Not only that, but some crazy monks between 1200 AD and 1500 AD decided to avoid some religious persecution by building monasteries on top of them! They used to ferry goods and themselves up the rock-face with rope lasses. There are about 13 still around. You can drive up now, or...like us...try to "hike up". Ya right. We ambitiously started out along this path (not well-marked) only to figure that we were on the wrong path and turned around, went back to our hotel for a nap. The next day, we took a cab ride ... read more

We arrived safely in Athens after a very long trip here. All our flights were great and on time. Arrived into Athens around 4:10 PM local time on Saturday. Took the metro into the city and found our hotel easily. Took a long overdue nap and headed out for dinner (or lunch, depending on your perspective!). For those of you into Greek food, we had chicken and meat slouvakis and some local brew. First two much better than the latter. Had a good long sleep and then headed out this morning for our big tour today. We tried to get some food from the market, but it wasn't open early enough. So we saw some ancient ruins (Temple of Olympian Zeus) and watched the changing of the guard at the Parliament...quite amusing actually. See pictures. Had ... read more
