Tuesday was amazingly hot. Our landlord, Brian, later said it got to 116 degrees F (well, technically he said it got to like 47 degrees C and Uncle Dan converted it on his computer, but close enough). Unfortunately that was the morning that the power went out. No air conditioning in that weather is pretty miserable, so Uncle Dan went on a walk. Bird watching was a little impossible though because as he said, “the birds were sweating too”. When Aunt Mary finally got up, she called Brian and made sure the air would be back up soon, so we decided to head out and it was cooler when we got back.
We went to Nafplion, about half an hour away. I loved it there. Uncle Dan and Aunt Mary even put up with shopping in tourist traps with me for a while. We also explored up higher into the city where the views were amazing before realizing that we had yet to put on sunscreen so we should probably go back into the shade. Uncle Dan declared about every 10 feet that we were in a good place for a beer. That’s when we stopped at a trendy
little coffee shop and had our first Frappes. Uncle Dan stuck with a beer of course. After the coffee, we were on our way out of town and I saw to my relief that there are in fact Greek rocker types too. I like it here. Unfortunately he started to smoke. Not okay.
The beach of the day that day was Tolo. I know I loved those other beaches, but they weren’t anything to Tolo. It was everything Aunt Mary and Uncle Dan hate in a beach . . it was perfect. It was sandy and touristy with warm water and no visible wildlife. We need a beach like that at home. The boys were funny there too. Aunt Mary somehow got herself into a never ending game of catch with some old Greek men that was getting a little annoying. Uncle Dan finally had to go kiss her so that they would stop. Somewhere in there, she realized that she had lost her hat in the ocean. She did like that they called her ‘Bella’ though. . .apparently she gets called that a lot because she sure answers to it quickly. I got asked to be in picture
with some guys next to us who we had originally thought to be gay. Greek boys are definitely outgoing.
On the way to the apartment, we stopped at the ruins of an ancient theater (Ru-ins, not runes as Aunt Mary pronounces it. Uncle Dan and I were already pretty hot and tired, so we stayed at the bottom while she climbed the stairs. She played it off pretty well, but her legs hurt after. I also found a new species of Greek bugs. I’ve been seeing a lot of those lately. These were the fastest bugs I’ve ever seen, so naturally I named them Fast Greek Bugs.
After our calm dinner in, Uncle Dan decided to go to bed. Aunt Mary however offered to go back into Nafplion and I quickly took her up on it. Nightlife is Greece in amazing. The clubs don’t even open until 2:00 am. At 1:30 am the streets were lined with cars and everyone was finishing dinner or having a drink in an outdoor bar. We decided to walk the boardwalk before choosing a place to settle down. It was actually a little more intimidating than I had thought it would be.
The Greek boys whistled and made kissing noises at us. I wondered if they did that to Greek girls too, but we never found out. I assume so. Either way it was harmless. I do know that I’d go back in a heartbeat and not be concerned.
