Greece...we read or ear about Greece nearly everyday over the last year. So here I am, to help somehow the local economy, to visit some nice places and enjoy some pretty cool food! My last visit to Greece was back in 1999, another time for the country. This time, I'm spending a full 9 days in the country, exploring all the places I have on my wish-list for a while, as well as revisiting some classics that I visit back in 1994 and 1999. I made my way from Skopje to Thessaloniki by bus. The border was a seriously crowded affair, but we went through pretty smoothly. Could already witness a lot of migrants at the train station trying to leave Greece, on to Macedonia on their way to Germany or Britain. Thessaloniki is not the ... read more

I'm sure there ar things to see in the area, but it would mean taking Billy & it's too far/mountainous/dangerous to cycle, so we stayed on the beach. Last night I lent my Turkish wafter (technical term for a plastic BBQ fan) to a neighbour who turned out to be a Brit. He was a Brit, in Greece driving a Bulgarian plated car. I asked if he was on the run – he & his wife run a hotel 2 hours away in a town called Bankso in the Bulgarian mountains – sun in the summer & snow in the winter. Nice. In the late afternoon it got very humid & dark so we returned to Billy in case it rained as all the vents were wide open.... & it did, heavily, for what seemed like ... read more

Checked out to see the girl on reception looking even more worried as the Greek PM & FM (Here's looking at Euclid) were leaving stuff until the last minute. Not a long drive, about 100 miles to Kavala & again very quiet roads. We stayed here before too having pre booked all the Greek sites in case they were busy. I was surprised that the site wasn't but the beach was, it being a popular day trip spot for the area & for Bulgarians – the border being only an hour's drive away. Settled in, had lunch & found 2 sun-loungers on the beach. They had 1 waiter & 2 waitresses wandering up & down the beach taking orders for the bar; they were kept very busy. Then we spotted a site to behold next to ... read more

It's Thursday today so, according to our cruise itinerary, we must be in Kavala! Once again we were oblivious to a smooth night's sailing during which we travelled 157 nautical miles at an average speed of 12 knots. By the time we got ourselves out of bed the Thomson Spirit was at her berth! Kavala is built on the site of the ancient Roman city of Neopolis. After breakfast we left the ship and walked up to the Byzantine fortress that towers over the 'old town' on the Panagia Peninsula. We strolled up the narrow, twisted streets of this old section of the city passing pastel painted houses and the Halil Bey complex on our way. Once a mosque, the Halil Bey complex has been repurposed as an art gallery. After enjoying the amazing 360 degree ... read more

We arrived in Thessaloniki, Greece this morning at about 7.30am. Our overnight voyage was smooth and our docking took place without us even being aware that we had made the transition from sailing to stationery! By the time we ventured out of bed the ship had already been in port for at least half an hour. We had a leisurely breakfast before heading off into Thessaloniki for a few hours. We walked along the sea front to the White Tower which houses Thessaloniki's history museum. All the interpretative boards were in Greek and the English audio guide was disappointingly scant on information. Still, it was a tower that we could ascend for a view over Thessaloniki's harbour-side area ... and we hadn't climbed a tower for a week or so!! From the White Tower we walked ... read more

Having chatted with the Brit (55,Northampton), he's deffo a football manager. I asked him what kept him here & he said, “the women!” He had it all, lots of money, his pension, his grown lads running his businesses, he'd sold the Porche etc etc. He'd had enough & decided that this was the life. He said it was, quote, “Korma” - how I didn't burst out laughing & pee myself I have no idea. Tick for self control....what a plonker Rodders. He chose to live in the worst place we've stayed... Uneventful drive but once again beautiful scenery all the way across. Stopped for lunch at a reat stop & found yet another Lidl in the town approaching Kavala. Found the site easily enough – it's very nice but must be heaving in the holiday season. ... read more

Europe » Greece » Central Macedonia » Paralia Katerinis April 19th 2015

I took an UNMIK tour to Paralia, Greece. The bus trip over was not too long and I met three young women who I wound up spending quite a bit of time with over the weekend. We became travel buddies! We stayed in a hotel right on the Aegean sea. Waking up in the morning and going to the breakfast buffet where we then ate at little tables right on the beach was amazing. Breakfast was pretty good too. After breakfast, I took off my shoes and waded into the water. It was too cold to swim, but I enjoyed Skyping with my parents from the Aegean sea so much that I woke them up to do it. It felt amazing being able to share that experience with them. Me and my new friends decided to ... read more

Europe » Greece » Central Macedonia » Thessaloniki November 9th 2014

THESSALONIKI. November 8/9, 2014. Rain, Overcast, cold. The train left promptly. We had settled in for the 3 hours. Then about 45 mins later there was a Greek announcement. Everyone else but us, got up, got down their bags and made for the door. Found an english speaker who told us there was a train change. No advice when booking! Arrived in T, the second city of Greece, at a very small station not indicative of a second city. Lined up for a taxi, with the homeless, before deciding to go searching in the rain for a taxi. Northern Greece looks to have been hit hard by the financial dramas. Huge youth unemployment must be very demoralising, evidenced by the chronic graffiti. Sat around most of Saturday afternoon due to the constant drizzle. Sunday was much ... read more

Europe » Greece » Central Macedonia » Philippi July 30th 2014

Were on the road to Phillipi Ok so it's early and light and someone is moving around - ah that will be Catherine then. We woke the kids up at about 9 as Jennifer Hotel provides breakfast and what a breakfast! As you can see from the picture absolutely gorgeous... We eat and they kept bringing plates of this and that to try. Tomorrow I'm going swimming before breakfast so I can be hungry enough to eat it all. Fresh coffee, freshly squeezed Oranges, did we want bacon and eggs? One more wafer thin mint sir... It was a bit like that. After we'd eaten it was warming up nicely - oh I forgot to mention we had breakfast outside in the very pleasant 30 degrees! We packed up what we were going to take with ... read more

Europe » Greece » Central Macedonia » Vergina July 29th 2014

Today I took a day trip to the museum that houses the tombs of Alexander the Greats father and son. It is a cool place - the museum is actually built around the actual tombs, so they are in situ. There were no photos allowed, however, so none of the coolness is shown here. It was a long day trip for somewhere so close - the bus connections were bad. I had to take a bus to the bus station (30 min). Got right on the bus to Veria (60 min). Had an hour wait for the bus to Vergina (about 40 min). I was dropped off practically at the museum, so that was easy, but I'm glad I had asked in Veria about buses back, as there were not many. I arrived at 12pm and ... read more
