I took an UNMIK tour to Paralia, Greece. The bus trip over was not too long and I met three young women who I wound up spending quite a bit of time with over the weekend. We became travel buddies! We stayed in a hotel right on the Aegean sea. Waking up in the morning and going to the breakfast buffet where we then ate at little tables right on the beach was amazing. Breakfast was pretty good too. After breakfast, I took off my shoes and waded into the water. It was too cold to swim, but I enjoyed Skyping with my parents from the Aegean sea so much that I woke them up to do it. It felt amazing being able to share that experience with them. Me and my new friends decided to ... read more

I went to Istanbul for the long weekend. I booked an apartment near Taksim square on Airbnb - this was my first time using Airbnb and I'm now a convert to the service. I got a really good deal and the guy who's apartment I was renting was very professional and helped me quite a bit. I got in to Instanbul around noon on Saturday and took the bus to Taksim. By the time I got to Taksim and got to the apartment, it was around 2pm. The big tourist attraction of the old city close around 4pm this time of year, so I decided to just stick around Taksim for the afternoon and evening and then go to the old city early the next day. I think this was a good choice, since when I ... read more

I may be fast approaching the point where jet lag is no longer an excuse, but I slept most of the morning. This afternoon, I felt like if I stayed in I would just sleep more so I decided to go out. I wanted to buy a clothing iron, and I'd been told of an appliance store that was just down the street from my usual walk to work, so I decided to give it a shot by myself. I quickly found and bought an iron, but why should I go back so soon? So I decided to explore the new area. And I found something awesome! An open air green market (with excellent looking produce!) that led to a mass of flea market type tents. It was amazing! It reminded me of the big open ... read more

And the transatlantic flight was surprisingly good! I flew Lufthansa, and would not hesitate to recommend them. A lot of space, like Austria airlines, but the staff was more attentive and there were more amenities, like a usb port for charging at every seat in economy. Food was bland, but eh... what are you going to do? I have another hour and a half on my layover in Munich airport. I had lunch at an okay ramen shop. Expensive, and no tonkotsu ramen (my favorite), but my torikawa ramen was okay. Im looking forward to being back in Pristina!... read more

So, I wound up having a nice day on Sunday. I was not perfectly better, but I was good enough to enjoy more of the city. I had coffee in the morning, and some bread, so not the sumptious breakfast of the previous day in an effort to help with my stomach complaint. It worked, so I went back to the main street and turned the opposite way than I had before. I saw many interesting shops, which I took pictures of, and did more shopping. However, when I got near the end of the street, I found a museum dedicated to a Bulgarian Renaissance thinker and an Orthodox church from the same time period. I went to the museum, and it was absolutely deserted except for me and the guy running it - it was ... read more

UNMIK, the UN Mission in Kosovo, runs these weekend tours to various places in the region. I signed up for the one for Bansko, Bulgaria - a ski resort town. I don't ski, but there is plenty of stuff to do in Bansko anyway. We left Pristina at around 3:50pm by bu s. I tried taking pictures of the beautiful mountains of Kosovo, but it was through the bus window so they're not very good. WEhad no problems on the border to Macedonia. However, on the border to Bulgaria, we wound up having to wait for a very long time to get through. It felt like hours, but I don't really know how long it was. Then it was snowing heavily, so we had to drive really slow. About 18 km away from Bansko, we became ... read more

...so I've been eating! Oh, and doing other things too! I've had so many wonderful experiences these past couple of weeks, it's hard to name them all. I have a new office-mate, Fiona, who is absolutely awesome. We've had lunch a couple of times. I ran into Leurata after work and we went out for coffee and went clothing shopping. I didn't buy clothing then, but later I bought socks and I hope to get some t-shirts and scarves soon. I also bought some amazing silver earrings, but they are going to be gifts for people so I'm not going to upload pictures of them yet until they've been given (probably end of March after I come back to take the MPRE and then return to Kosovo). For those curious about the price of handmade silver ... read more

Sometime around the two week mark, I stopped feeling like I was here on vacation and I started feeling like I was living here. I've discovered where they have convenience food in my favorite grocery store. I bought frozen chicken schnitzel and broccoli dumplings! I can now also cook a variety of meals, my favorite being a sort of stir fry with Bosnian sausage and red cabbage - I don't have a wok but I kind of stir fry in a regular pan. People from work have taken me to several nice and interesting restaurants. I had a sort of flaky spinach pie at one that I have got to have again. At another restaurant I had a very nice stuffed chicken breast and avocado and mozzarella salad; as good as any nice restaurant in the ... read more

So, this was an interesting weekend. I decided to go out and see some sights. I bought a lonely planet guidebook which described some places I wanted to visit, but I worried that I would get lost on the way. However, I wound up being able to find my way around nicely. All I had to do was always know where the street "Agni Ramadani" was. As long as I knew that, I knew how to get back to my apartment. I went down to the city center and visited the Kosovo Museum. Some of the museum seemed to be closed, or they had switched exhibits between what my guidebook described, because instead of general cultural artifacts they had two exhibits: an exhibit on a specific family's life in Kosovo pre-war and their sacrifices during the ... read more

Hey! I survived my first couple of days. I spent a lot of time being lost, but now I can get to work and get back home and buy groceries, so I'll live. Pristina is great! People here have this warm hospitality and are very welcoming to foreigners. I've needed a ton of help, and people at work have been amazing! I still have a ton of things about living here to learn, but I know that I can make it. I'm also having many adventures getting my phone to work over here. I think I know what I need to do to get it going though I'm going to try going out to eat today, go see some sights, and then I might buy some stuff for my kitchen. Should be a fun day!
