The Entrance to the Flea Market - Great Produce!
The guys in the photo all looked uncomfortable that I was taking pictures. I have the idea that they don't get a lot of foreigners in the flea market. But the produce can't be beat and it's so near my normal walk home from work that they're going to be seeing a lot of me! I may be fast approaching the point where jet lag is no longer an excuse, but I slept most of the morning. This afternoon, I felt like if I stayed in I would just sleep more so I decided to go out.
I wanted to buy a clothing iron, and I'd been told of an appliance store that was just down the street from my usual walk to work, so I decided to give it a shot by myself. I quickly found and bought an iron, but why should I go back so soon? So I decided to explore the new area.
And I found something awesome! An open air green market (with excellent looking produce!) that led to a mass of flea market type tents. It was amazing! It reminded me of the big open air flea market in Paris or that one in the US that's in Florida. Hardly anybody spoke English there, but I accidentally started dickering over the price of some honey. It looked like good honey, but I don't really eat honey so I tried to gracefully extricate myself from the situation. Not so graceful - I nearly stumbled over three live chickens which
Live Chickens for Sale
I don't think I could kill a chicken. Do you.... how do you kill it? Like, just chop it's head off? Or do you devise some kind of chickeny death trap? Perhaps a pit and a pendulum situation. were sitting in a box. The chickens totally ignored me even though I almost fell into them. I wasn't so embarrassed that I didn't stop to take a picture, because live chickens for sale!
Once outside of the flea market complex again, I saw many mobile phone stores, 1 euro stores, restaurants, clothing, and jewelery stores. I stopped at a couple of mobile phone shops because I was looking for a new phone case. Every phone shop had five or six people who just seemed to be hanging out inside. I don't think they all worked there, though maybe they did, but they weren't shopping. It didn't strike me as intimidating, in fact, the group of people in the shops seemed quite happy to help me try to communicate what I wanted or tell me about interesting shops in the area. I really have to commend the attitude that people have to me here - I'm in a country without speaking any but a few words of the language, and I'm aware that I'm a tremendous difficulty because of that. Nevertheless, I'm never made to feel like I'm a bother - rather, people bend over backwards trying to help
me. It's a really kind culture. Honestly, I believe that people from the Midwest of the US tend to share that culture when we are at our best; at least, I sincerely hope that we do.
I'm including photos of one of the 1 euro stores because of the cute Stitch bag! Also, a mobile shop that advertises that it carries "Blackbarry" products. Honestly, this is the first incorrect or misspelled English sign I've seen. It's not like Japan, where there are many funny examples of wrong English. Also, I saw a cute little garden area near the apartment complex of my friend Fiona. I went to her place after shopping for coffee and also I tasted a little plum rakia, a strong alcoholic beverage that reminded me of a dry umeshu (Japanese plum liquor). Finally, I'm including a picture of Fiona's dog, Shatzsi. He is a beautiful golden retriever and so friendly! His fur is the color of a lion, and he is regal like one when he's not begging for tummy rubs!
I think I'm going to take a bus trip to Prizren, a beautiful city with thousands of years of history, on Monday, which I

That Stitch bag! So cute! have off because it's Orthodox Easter. I'm very excited to go, because my friends Kastriot and Leurata recommend it as an authentic Kosovo experience. I just hope I'm not too tired!
