Europe » Greece » Central Greece » Euboea
t is Sunday night and We have returned to Athens from the island of Evia, village of Styra. A 45 minute ferry ride and a 45 minute drive to the house in Pallini, Athens. Can you believe it a traffic jam at midnight, Sunday with a temperature of 30 degrees. Not sure of this weeks plans yet, but making good use of every moment of my time away. Now I will back track to some of the activities of the last two weeks, which were quite something. I trust you will enjoy the pictures. We have seen some of them on [View Full Entry]

Nea Styra, enjoying the warm air
Here we are again on another ferry boat, 45 min drive from Athens and then 45 minutes on the ferry, again full of people going to the big island of Evia. We left the vehicle behind parked somewhere along the driveway. Staying at Papou and Yaya's house an apartment on the hill over a store a block from the sea, with a beautiful balcony looking out to the sea through the houses. How nice, with a nice view of the hills. (unfortunately here again they had a large fire just the day prior and one of the Canadian water planes went [View Full Entry]

Thiva to Delphi[url='/Videos/4282.html' onclick='dialog("/Videos/4282.html?popped=1","tbvideo",600,600);return false;'] Delphi For economy’s sake, and just because it makes more sense, I’ve combined my experiences from four days here, starting the day after my first trip to Orchomenos. The next morning (the 6th) I got up early in the morning and went over and over the information I had on the palace of Orchomenos. There is in fact evidence of a palace near the grounds of the present Byzantine church and monastery of Panagea Skripou. But wher [View Full Entry]

Orchomenos

Europe » Greece » Central Greece » Orchomenos
Thebes to Orchomenos 7-05 Been having trouble getting wireless access last few days. Anyway here's my report on Orchomenos. Today (7-5) I set out for Orchomenos to see what I could find there. The town didn’t disappoint. I took the bus first to Livadia, which was an experience in and of itself, and then to Orchomenos. I didn’t have to go far from the bus stop before I happened upon the remains of the 4th century B.C. theater, and immediately behind it, the tomb of the legendary King Minyas. I was, of course, especially taken with the tomb and wit [View Full Entry]

Gia sas everyone! Found out today that the museum in Thebes is closed for renovation, which of course was not mentioned on the website when I looked before I came. That’s a major bummer because I was depending on my visit there to get an idea of the artifacts which are common to Viotia and Chania. I’m hoping I can find a catalog for the museum at least in a local bookshop. So, rather than going to the museum, I went to Gla. For those of you who don't know, Gla was a Mycenaean fortress located in the middle of [View Full Entry]

Athens to Thebes THIVA, 1:27am local time- I arrived in Athens last night and met Pro’s sister Denise. She’s really a lovely girl, and so sweet and helpful. I brought her a t-shirt that says “New York” on it, just as a token. I know a t-shirt sounds incredibly lame, but what do you get for someone you’ve never met before whose home you’re going to be staying in? Hopefully something a little more original will present itself before the end of my stay. We walked around in Athens last night. Her neighborhood is far from the c [View Full Entry]

On my second day in Athens, I got up early to take the three-hour bus to Delphi with Charly and Prem. Those two didn't get along so well, which I mostly just found amusing, but we all had a great time anyways. It was phenomenal to see the ancient Greek "centre of the universe", and I realized that I find sculpture so much more beautiful and inspiring when it's in the place it was originally designed for. Maybe that's the contemporary art student in me, or maybe there really is something to the idea that art has a purpose, and [View Full Entry]

Next week I will be going to Skyros. it's the biggest and most beautiful in the Sporades (Skiathos, Skopelos, Allonissos). The town of Skyros is built under a castle on a hill very picturesque. It isn't a very touristic place. No big resorts and organized beaches. Perfect for relaxing and enjoying fresh fish and crystal clear sea. Even in the middle of summer, when every island is packed, you can find a secluded cove for yourself. The port is in a lovely small fishing village filled with fishing boats that bring a fresh catch every morning. The best by far [View Full Entry]

Untitled James Emerson I had to do it. How can you come to greece and not see delphi, the center of the ancient world. The place where thosands, probalby millions went to get advice form the oracle of apolpo before making anykind of major descion. this one site has probably influenced the world more than anyone is aware of. How could I not go. All through university I hads heard that the place was amazing. I remember one of my proffesors saying that when you go there and see the sight, you know why people kept rebuilding t [View Full Entry]
