Thessaloniki to Delphi - Day 13 Friday 20th September Thessaloniki is knee deep in cars. If ever you have been to Amsterdam and seen how the bikes are joined 10 deep from a fence and you wonder how the owner of bike number 1 can retrieve it... then imagine the same with cars. They are parked everywhere and never seem to move. People park at 90 degrees to the pavement with half the car on the pavement. Any bit of vacant road is parked upon. Areas with wide angles and spare bits of concrete are chocker full of cars. When you get to a junction, you don't know which lanes are waiting for traffic lights or just parked. People just give up on the rigid traffic and leave their cars at the point of just having ... read more

... read more

Geo: 39.0742, 21.8243Today we slept in a little longer and got up to breakfast around 9. We returned to the stateroom. Mom cleaned up stuff while I watched TV. Then we went to a special invitational champagne luncheon held by the captain and received a nice gift. Then we attended a presentation on Holland America cruises. After that it was up to the Crows Nest bar for a couple of smoothies and Internet. We listened to a real good singer and guitar player for a while, went to buffet dinner, 8pm show and back to our room. Mom stopped at the ship shop and returned a bracelet she bought a year ago that had a missing a stone and they gave her a new one -guaranteed forever.... read more

Geo: 38.4708, 22.5659Delphi is famous for the Oracle that once resided here, so renowned for her ability to foresee the future that the most powerful people of the ancient world traveled vast distances and paid small fortunes to consult with her before making any major decisions. Wouldn't they feel ripped off if they knew scientists now believe she was just spouting random drivel while high on ethylene gas?Turns out there was a chasm near where she sat, spewing toxic gases that made her all loopy and caused her to mutter nonsensical phrases that priests would interpret for those who had come to see her. The messages were rarely clear, and could often be understood as either good or bad, depending on what the receiver chose to believe. Sounds like a bunch of high hippies running a ... read more

Delphi 30 June 2013 After the 30 minute ferry trip (6 Euros) from Rio near Patras to Antirio, we were on our way to Delphi. This was only a short drive and we found the site easily. Delphi was believed to be ‘the centre of the earth’ in ancient times. It was known for its very famous place of Apollo hence the Temple of Apollo is the most notable structure on this site. In the late 8th century BC people used to come here to worship and to seek advice from the Gods. With the political rise of Delphi in the 6th century BC, and the establishment of the Pythian Games – a cultural, religious and athletic festival – the site entered a golden age until the arrival of the Romans in 191 BC. The site ... read more

Bright & early we (I mean the car) climbed up the steep cliffs of Meteora to the Monasteries. Built in the 13th-14th centuries, they hang periously close to various cliff edges. I don't know how they did it! The monks fled to the monasteries to escape persecution from the Ottoman Empire. Even so, many were martyred for their faith. We visited 4 of the 6 monasteries that are open to visitors. Our favorite was Megalo Meteoro (Great Meteoro) despite all the steps! We climbed a bizillion steps to reach the top! The Byzatine artwork in the Church was beautiful! Beth recognized some of the paintings & artists from her studies at Savannah College of Art & Design. At Varlaam Monastery, we saw the nets that the monks once used to get to the monasteries. They would ... read more

We said goodbye to Thessaloniki and headed south to Kalampaka. We stopped in Veroia (Beroea in Biblical times) at the Altar of the Apostle Paul. The white marble steps lead to beautiful mosaics that tell the story of Paul's call to the people of Macedonia & show him preaching to the people here (Acts 17:11). We stumbled onto a 14th Century church while walking to the town center. The faded frescos on the stone walls once inspired Christians as they worshipped here. The old woman who let us in was delighted to meet me - I was first woman pastor that she had ever met. We said prayers of blessing, & continued on our way. Driving through the mountains, we reached Kalampaka early in the afternoon. The meal of the day was at Restaurant Meteora. Every ... read more

Breakfast was included in the price at the Hotel Iradanos and we took it at the pavement cafe in front of the hotel on a beautifully sunny and relaxed Greek Sunday morning overlooking the waterfront. It was a coffee shop and being from a generation where a cup of coffee is a cup of coffee there was a confusing few minutes where the waitress explained all the different types of coffee they have and we kept saying, "yes but we just want a cup of coffee please." In the end I think we ended up with very milky coffee but it was very good. We decided that our last day on the mainland should be a lazy one and we headed for a point on the map about half way back to Athens where a beach ... read more
