We are a bit behind with our blog but will try and catch up tomorrow morning. Today we docked at Piraeus in Greece. We got up and had breakfast then got off the ship and went by bus to Athens to see the Acropolis and ruins. It was really hot. we walked to the top and saw the Acropolis and Parthenon. There were lots of people. Then we had a look around the little street shops, dad brought a top that was made out of cotton to keep him cool. We waited for the bus and went back to the ship, and had a nice swim in the pool to cool off. We htea dinner in the Cafe again tonight and went back to our room.... read more

Another long (3 hour) drive from the western Peloponnese to Delphi. First a 60 mile drive to Patra, which is a 2 lane road. The locals make it into a 4 lane road which makes life interesting, particularly when cyclists, pedestrians, tractors etc become involved. Carol stayed very quiet. I think she was in shock. (EDGES OF ROADS, BIG DROP, OLD GREEK LADIES AND MEN WITH DONKEYS WALKING ON THE HARD SHOULDER WHICH TIM IS DRIVING IN, MAD DOGS RUNNING TOWARDS YOU AND DEAD CATS AND DOGS TO WEAVE IN AND OUT OF.)Then at Patra a new and very spectacular bridge, the Rio Antirro or Charlilaos Trikoupus (so good they named it twice) appears. (ALSO KNOWN AS THE A55) It really is an impressive piece of engineering, take a look at the photos. When you get ... read more

5 June Key Tours Day 3 Spent the morning at Olympia, a very interesting site. Was great to see the stadium where the games were held in BC. Another warm day. We spent the morning there, there was a special sports museum, then at the end, another museum with relics from the digs. Lunch stop was at a buffet restaurant, nice for 12 E, sat in the shade afterwards. Drove to Delphi in afternoon, a very scenic drive with rural and coastal views, and a stop at the new bridge at Patras. The road to Delphi was amazing, winding up the hills to the top. We were in a lovely hotel with a view right over the valley, millions of olive trees and then the sea in the distance. Had a swim in the pool and ... read more

The hotel owners probably wondered what we were up to when we didn't appear downstairs for breakfast like all their other guests for the night. However, our overnight rate didn't include breakfast so we fed ourselves from our supplies although we didn't bring the microwave in so there was no scrambled egg. The breakfast room didn't compare to having breakfast on our airy balcony under the wide awning protecting us from the already warming sun and of course we had a toaster and they didn't downstairs. Although we had seen the passage of a small ship through the Corinth Canal yesterday which was more than we could have expected we didn't get to the bridge that crosses the 21 metre gap on the main road between Loutraki(where we stayed) and Corinth. The idea of a canal for the ... read more

Tuesday 23rd October Well today we were up before the birds to get ready for our cruise to the three Greek islands, Hydra, Poros and Aegean. We arrived at the Marina before it was light and the cruise ship was much larger than we thought it would be. We have been told many times since arriving here that it only rains 10 days in Greece, it was a bit showerey to start the day but it cleared up as the day went on. The water was smooth and Colin and I spent most of the day up on deck a it was nicer up there seeing where we were going. We arrived at the lovely island of Hydra, a quaint little seaside village which boasted a lovely marina area, loads of cafes, no cars only donkeys ... read more

Wednesday 24th October Another early start as we were travelling to the famous site of Delphi, it is about a 3hr drive from Athens but well worth the drive. I kept pinching myself as it seemed like it was a bit of a dream that I was on my way to visit a place I have been dreaming of going to for a long time... Another one off the bucket list... Unbelievable how lucky are we to be here. The town of Delphi is on a mountain side and in winter the opposite side of the mountain is a snow resort, the township is very quaint and cute with a road through it just wide enough for the bus to get through. We left Athens with it raining quite heavy really, it wasn't cold at all ... read more

Up with the birds after an amazing sleep, the first in two nights in a bed. The hotel is fabulous and very comfortable. We were being picked up at 8am for a half day tour of the city, ended up feeling a bit like we were in the movie my life in ruins with the tour guides.. On one bus, off that bus on another, then onto another and finally we were off, we began the morning visiting the temple of Zeus, an amazing place the energy in that place was amazing col and I could have stayed there for ages, we will return on Thursday. it has 15 columns of the 140 columns left and the detail on them let alone the height and weight of them was incredible to think when it was built. ... read more

18 September I have been very lax in keeping up to date with my blog (too busy relaxing in Greece!). So I left off with our flight from Beirut to Athens. As I mentioned previously, this was a smooth flight with the exception of a disruptive (and may I say drunk) passenger. It turned into a bit of a comedy in the end – though we felt sorry for the people sitting next to him. I think he was Greek – the air crew had quite a time getting him to sit down (the only time I saw the old flight attendant guy do anything was to tell him to sit and be quiet). Walking off the plane, we saw blood drops on the floor and didn’t know what it was until we saw the old ... read more

Well the time has come for us to get the boat on the hard and clean it down. We are now in Turkey at a place called Maramis were the boat will stay for the next 8 months. Our last Greek island was called Simi and was just so neat as a farewell place. We hired moter scooters and whizzed around the island on some incredable roads and swam at various little beaches with small Tavinas supplying us with the required food etc. Magic stay. The day we left this island we had to go and see customs to get passports stamped etc. Off to the port authorities then off to the Police station were they do all the paper work. Took forever but when there we all came down to reality. The station was a ... read more

Well we are now in our last port in Geece before we arrive in Turkey. We have come down from the island and port of Kos were we stopped for 2 nights. the last blog I sent out didn't go as the network went down as it was down loading photo's. So you should have it now and this is following on very close behind. kos was interesting and i have already mentioned the scooters and buggy. The next day we got a taxi out to a old site that featured mineral baths that the Romans put in during the 3rd c AD. A very large site and quite amazing. It included many buildings and alters temples etc. A good sail down to the island of Simi today were we will stay for the next couple ... read more
