The day II in Hamburg & Lübeck. Today's target: Hamburg! We took an U-bahn (Metro train) from Ahrensburg to Hamburg because it was the most convenient way of travelling to downtown Hamburg. It took about 40 minutes to get to downtown Hamburg. The city of Hamburg lies at the junction of the River Elbe with the Rivers Alster and Bille. The city center lies around two lakes, the Binnenalster ("Inner Alster") and the Aussenalster ("Outer Alster"). We started out by visiting....Lego store! Surprise! It was a nice big store with all sorts of Lego toys and things. Daniela-the-Lego-fan bought a blue Lego man T-shirt. We others just shopped with our eyes. Our official first visiting place was Hamburg Rathaus. What a building! We heard later that it holds one room more than the Buckingham Palace...and not ... read more

Dawn Writes: We spent the morning recovering from the German/Irish karaoke fiasco of 2007 and then spent the afternoon shopping. Sarah also took me to get my nose pierced which seemed like a good thing to do on vacation until Sarah translated for me that there was the remotest of possibilities that my face might become paralyzed. Well I’m known for being a risk taker (hee he) so I did it anyway. My face is fine, the right half just doesn’t move anymore. Afterwards, we were off to Sarah’s parents to meet her family. We were of course offered more German beer which we were too polite to decline. After some small talk, beer and pleasantries, out came the Ouzo (the European equivalent of Zambooka). I don’t know how many bottles we went through but I’ll ... read more

So last night was a great celebration in honor of our 5 year anniversary. We were able to spend a wonderful day visiting the Louvre and Musee Rodin. I can't believe we got to see Mona Lisa, The Thinker, and The Kiss, all on our special day! I definitely won't forget it! We left in the evening to celebrate our anniversary in Paris, and got to eat dinner at that lovely cafe that we had spent the day prior. We had a great dinner, and I had view of two of my favorites in the world: my husband and the Eiffel Tower. It was a great setting, we had great food and great conversation. We left to go see the Tower at around 7:30, even though I was worried we would miss the sunset. We made ... read more

It has been a week since we were in Germany, so this blog is a little slow in getting on the web. We are in Belgium now but more on that later. Firstly the keyboards are not getting any easire to use. This one is a AZERTY keyboard rather than q QWERETY keyboard. Back to Germany, we flew into Frankfurt, had 3 nights there then spent 4 days driving up the Rhine to the Netherlands. Our 3 nights in Frankfurt were good for getting over Jet Lag but apart from that Frankfurt wasnt too exciting! Topping the sights in Frankfurt were the numerous kids playgrounds around town and also the botanical gardens, which were worth a look around. One thing we did appreciate was the plesent temperatures, a little wet but not so hot! After frankfurt ... read more

Dawn Writes: We put our annoying tourist shoes back on and Erik took us to Celle, a beautiful old small town about 40 minutes from Hannover. I spent the day taking pictures of Sean and Erik taking pictures and they didn’t let me go into a single shoe store! Bastards! And of course we had more food and more beer! Later that evening back in Hannover Erik and Sarah took us to their favourite Irish bar for some German karaoke and Irish beer. Erik and Sarah, or as they’re known here Frank Sinatra and Celine Dion, had no problem karaoking (I don’t know how to spell that) but Sean and I would be needing a lot of liquid courage… which of course was in no short supply. We had way too much to drink and at ... read more

This is our last day on the Weser and as advertised it is the prettiest. During a stop in Bodenweder, a gentleman who turned 71 this week, talks to us about the town, the cycle route along the Weser, the town's history as the home of Baron Muenchhausen (of which there are many stories/legends of which he tells us some) and of his experiences as a child during the war and as town mayor. He also is the retired pharmacist of the pharmacy named Muenchhausen as it stands in front of the Baron Muenchhausen fountain. ... read more

My last trip in Germany before heading back home to Finland. So this time I update my Travelblog right after the trip. Unusual, I know, but I bet a nice surprise too! The travels that I still haven't updated here will be written to Travelblog some time soon... Target: Hamburg & Lübeck in northern Germany! I travelled with my Erasmus friends Christina, Daniela and Francesco. Christina is an Erasmus student from Bordeaux but is a German. Daniela comes from Portugal and Francesco from Italy. I...well you know where I come from! This trip was a surprise trip. We "planned" it on Tuesday night in an Erasmus party at Karlshof, Darmstadt. (And if you doubt it - no, alcohol had nothing to do with this trip planning!) "The plan" was to drive up to Hamburg with Christina's ... read more

After three delicious days in Berlin, we are on the move again. Currently on board Zug 241, from Berlin to Krakow, we are heading to Zagan in Poland to visit the Museum of Allied Prisoners of War Martyrdom, Stalag Luft III where my (Hero’s) grandfather was a POW during the last part of WWII. We are happy to be on the train again, as both Keira and I have fallen in love with train travel and particularly on a day like today which is cold and rainy and miserable, it feels wonderful to be comfy in our carriage watching the rain beating down on our window as we peer out to the beautiful and green and grey landscape outside. Berlin was fantastic and although we are happy to be back on a train (after the Trans-Siberian ... read more

Today we are back on the road on day three of our European tour. Let’s see now… how about we head away from Amsterdam, Holland, the Netherlands and into Germany. Let’s take a river cruise down the Rhine and spend the night at Wiesbaden…I guess we can do that J We started the day with our complimentary wake up call and buffet breakfast. These early mornings are starting to catch up with us! We then jumped in the bus and headed to our first stop - Koln - pronounced ‘Cologne‘. It was also our first day doing seat rotation for the bus - it sounds pretty dodgy but it stops some people hogging the good seats and forces you to sit opposite different people every day, which is good. I must admit the front seats are ... read more
