I got back to work in early May after my six week holiday and, well, what can I say, there was not much time to settle back in. Of course there was a lot of stuff to catch up on, but there was also some travelling awaiting me. In my second week I went to a two day congress on work and organisational psychology in the city of Göttingen, a little more than two hours from Hamburg. It was a congress organised by the German Psychologists’ Association and I presented some of our research there. The congress was rather nice and what was even better was that I had a late Friday afternoon off, so I could go into town and look around. Göttingen has a well-known university, and thus about 20 percent of its population ... read more

Upon arrival at Goettingen train station we were greeted by our hosts and whisked through the countryside to a little village called Sieboldshausen. As the house was elevated slighty it had a fantastic view to the east and west overlooking other villages and forests. After quite an extensive lunch we headed to a little medieval village called Hannover Munden to look at some amazing old buildings which are over 850 years old. On our second day we were taken into Goettingen to see an exhibition of items Captain Cook acquired during his journeys around South America, Asia, Australasia and Africa. This was followed by another big lunch (I see a trend here), before our hosts took us out to see a ruined castle nearby. Right as we arrived at the castle there was a massive storm ... read more

After learning German last year from Dennis and Sabine, my two TAs, who are actuall German students, studying abroad in the U.S., I knew that I had to go to their school and visit them. They attend Göttingen University, which, although not the oldest in Germany, has a very long and decorated history. (Something like 42 Nobel Laureates were either alumni or professors or both.). I took a long and rather dull bus ride over to Göttingen, which is in Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony) in former West Germany. It was my first trip to West Germany and it was interesting to compare. The landscape is more quaint, with neat little farms and towns dotting the landscape, puncutated by Germany’s army of windmills. I got to Göttingen about mid-afternoon on Friday and was picked up by Dennis at ... read more
