Day 1: Frankfurt for a day Ant and I arrived in Germany at about 10am. With a 6 hour layover we decided to roam Frankfurt. After walking the streets for a bit we found a spot to eat, took a cab back to the airport, and caught our flight to Bilbao ... read more

I arrived in Germany at 12noon on the 4th & apparently 4th of July is not that important around here. Where's my fireworks, parades & sparklers? I checked my (still) extremely heavy carry-on & went off to take a tour of Frankfurt. I took the train into Frankfurt & ate a weiner. More accurately I ate a curryschnitzel thing. They took a foot long weiner and put it into this weiner slicing machine (men might find painful to watch) and then it came out the bottom all sliced up! Then they put this brown ketchup & curry powder on it. I still thought it was a little boring, so I was adventurous and thought I'd add some condiments. Apparently mustuerd is mustard & milsch is milk (which doesn't taste too good on curry weiners--just in case ... read more

Indi 5.... read more

Wow, what a day... Had a good start this morning in Elk Grove. Got out of the house pretty much on time, and as of now we only know of a couple things we missed - nothing major. We picked up Tyler, and were off to the Bay Area. I think we discoverd the capacity limit on the Tahoe (2 Adults, 2 teenagers, 4 large pieces of luggage, and one dog). After dropping of Sage at Mom & Dad's, and picking up Dad to shuffle the car back from SFO, we were off to the airport. We got to the arrival drop off a little after 11:00am, and had our luggage checked, and were through security within 20 minutes (I swear it's more difficult to fly to Fresno than it is Internationally. Dumbfounded, we headed to ... read more

Train to Frankfurt required several changes but I finally got there. Handy that the ticket terminals at the station let you print out the train timetable. Found my hostel was in the middle of the red light district, got hassled by spruikers at 3pm lol. But there was two reasons I stopped at Frankfurt. One was to catch the boat the next morning foir a cruise up the Rhine to Koblenz, but the main one was to go and try one of those famous, oversized schnitzels and oversized beers at Waldgeist restaurant, at Hofheim on the outskirts of Frankfurt. Took the train out there and then walked, was a bit further than I thought, about 5kms. Sat outside in the beer garden where they had a big TV set up for the soccer like everywhere does ... read more

Lana refers to these as "cheater" entries - I guess it's about time I did one. I blame HI Brussels for charging me 1,5€ for an hour of internet. It's the first place (and thus far only) that has charged me for wireless. As much as I adore updating everyone, that hour was needed for more important things (like figuring out how to get out of Brussels). But on to the update! Thursday cont. - Made it to Brussels in one piece after a WONDERFUL train ride. The comfort of the train made up for all of the garbage I had to deal with at the train station. For the first time I did what my rail pass is supposed to allow me to do - I got on the train I wanted and just sat ... read more

We drove ourselves to the centre of Frankfurt (sounds like an Amazing Race clue) and found the Zeil, a large pedestrian only shopping area complete with restaurants, fruit and ice cream stands, as well as “rummies” begging for quarters... I had perfected my "I don't speak German" line when a woman approached us and in near perfect English said "do you have 50 cents for me and baby". After a brief moment of hesitation I let out "Ich spreche kein English". We walked quite a bit, and noticed there were more shoe stores than anything, also, there is a bakery about every 100 meters or so. Everything here is green already; they seem to be a month ahead of us with their spring. There are bicycles and motorcycles everywhere in Frankfurt, and the traffic is surprisingly ... read more

We left Saskatoon on time at 1:30 PM heading for Calgary and a 3 hour wait for our connecting flight. So, what do you do in an airport when you have 3 hours to kill? You eat! Fortunately, Calgary airport has a Chili's... The 9.5 hours flight to Germany was uneventful, although our Boeing 767 was equipped with the latest "on demand" entertainment system. Erin read through an entire book while I watched National Treasure before dozing off for a bit. Our luggage was one of the first to come out and, just like on our previous visit, German Customs was remarkably lax, maybe they just like our faces? Whatever the reason, they just asked where we were off too and stamped the passports. Once we got to my uncle's house, we ate, of course. Then ... read more

April 22, 2008 We made it safely to Germany to our niece Henita's place. We had a great dinner last night at ten o clock. We lost a whole bunch of stuff, like our brand-new video camera, but the camper is slowly spitting our stuff back out. We actually didn't really lose it; it was all were we left it but our brains have been fuzzy. We've been sleeping well; ten hours overnight! Today we are going down to the border of Austria; if all is well and our plans work out!!... read more

We just returned from a huge, old castle. They had rooms full of medieval weaponry and complete armour. Also horse bits, which were very facinating. All from the 1400's. There were rooms full of original paintings by the masters such as Frans Hals, etc. Paintings from the Renaissance, Gothic period, etc. A tiny picture only a foot long and half a foot wide was worth millions of dollars. They had fifty rooms full of paintings stored that they did not even have on display worth millions and millions of dollars. This is all owned by the original family who was there in the 13th century. They still have the same last name. ... read more
