hello! My name is alice, I'm 18 years old and I'm going to travel around the world for some weeks with my friend Ebba, I'll try to write as often as I can here to tell you about my experiences! We started the trip on the 9th of October, 11:40 am We took the train from Gothenburg to copenhagen, arriving 3:28 Pm.We both bought interrail cards for 269 €, plus 1€ for thief protection some weeks before this and it works in this way that you can be gone for 22 days, but you can only travel on 10 days during that time! It was the cheapest one we found, and it seem to work great! We had to change train to a train to one to Hamburg, but we had half an hour In Copenhagen ... read more

Geo: 53.625, 10.0106We returned to Hamburg today. It seemed that once one crosses the German border the speed of the traffic goes up by 20 - 30 KPH. Considering the limit was 110k before the border you can imagine what the driving is like - especially when you see cars like a Nissan Micra doing 130K. Thankfully it is a divided highway but lots of trucks. The GPS located the hotel easily. We checked in and then got some gas before returning the car to the airport. Check-in was smooth and the hotel sent a van to get us from the airport. We are only about 5 minutes from the airport. Checked in with the airlines online and have our boarding passes on our phones so tomorrow morning the van will take us to the airport ... read more

I think the best way to leave this first entry is with one of my favorite text, poems, books...whatever you'd like to call it, that I didn't truly apprechaite (or understand) until recently: "Congratulations! Today is your day. You're off to Great Places! You're off and away! You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the guy who'll decide where to go. You'll look up and down streets. Look 'em over with care. About some you will say, "I don't choose to go there." With your head full of brains and your shoes full of feet, you're too smart ... read more

Geo: 53.5536, 10.0152Probably walked 20+ K today. We headed out across the bridge between the two artificial lakes into the central city garden which is very large. You can cover a large part of the city on quiet trails shared only with pedestrians and bicycles. Very pleasant. Once we left the park we were in the St. Pauli area which is the major port area of the city. Lots of waterfront restaurants along a waterfront walkway. There was a Jeep demonstration and I got the opportunity to drive one over a course including a 40 degree ramp. We then headed back towards the more central area and the smaller of the artificial lakes where we stopped at a lakeside restaurant specializing in ice cream specialties. Our thirst levels dictated cold beer as opposed to ice cream. ... read more

Geo: 53.5533, 10.0149Our flight out of Vancouver was delayed which meant that we only had 25 minutes in Toronto to transfer. It is a bit disconcerting to hear your names being called out over the PA System. Thankfully we are travelling only with carry-ons. Next stop Frankfurt with a delayed transfer to Hamburg.Arrived safely despite the delays and we took the train from the airport to the main terminal downtown. Hamburg has a very efficient system and our hotel is only a 10 minute walk from there.Settled in and explored the immediate area and the St George's district. The city is very multicultural and it was not easy finding a German restaurant. Back to the hotel to do the first post and then get some much needed sleep.... read more

It is entirely possible that we slept a very long time this morning, and didn't have breakfast until after 10:00 AM, and then slowly assembly-lined through showers and teethbreeshing and so forth, and weren't ready to leave the house until after noon. Yes, definitely possible. Arnold and Doris were to return to Ettlingen on a train leaving just before 4pm, so we all piled onto the bus and headed into Altona to check out more of the street fair. There were many people and lots of things and smells and it was generally street-fair-like. Barbara and Andrea and I went in search of a WC (you know, a necessary); Andrea knew of a free one, except when we got there, they had taken it out, so instead we went and found a pay toilet, which was ... read more

We were slow to wake up today, and bad luck, the hot water went out after Cheryl got her shower. But, we all managed to do some version of "hit the high spots and hope for the best" and after a wonderful breakfast, we were off by bus to Altona. Our first stop was Stuhlmannbrunner ("chair man fountain"). The fountain was working, which, according to Andrea, was remarkable; it was working so well that Laura, Tiny Beethoven and I got a bit wet. We walked further toward the Elbe, and ended up at Altonaer Balkon, another park and scenic overlook where we spent some time looking over the scene. We then headed down to the ferry dock Dockland to wait for our tour boat. It turns out that the harbor ferry is a much more cost-effective ... read more

This post should be subtitled "The Struggle To Stay Awake". You see there are two ways I can deal with not getting jet lag. The first (which was my plan) was to get on the plane, change all of my devices to read CEST, sleep as much as possible on the plane, and then it would be whatever time it was when we got off the plane. That has worked for me in the past. But, for some reason, I couldn't sleep on this plane, so instead I just had a very long day, where I was awake from 7:30 AM (PDT) June 30th until just after midnight (CEST) July 2nd. I'm writing this at 8:30 AM (CEST) July 2nd, and I feel rested, refreshed, it really does seem like morning, so I would say the ... read more

So today I woke up early with Kolja and I observed two English classes in Germany. The students English was very good and we had a debate in class where I played the "devils advocate", the kids where very interested in American life, aparently, they learn mostly about England, but the kids asked me questions like: "Do all Americans like fast food?" "Do I own any guns?" "Are there Indians where you live?" To this I responded, "Only a baseball team." Surprisingly they knew about the Cleveland Indians and asked if I liked Lebron James too. It was weird to speak in English again, I felt like that part of my brain turned off. After I saw Kolja coming back from his field trip and I wandered the city a little bit and walked through the ... read more
