Kirk, Mitch and I spent 6 days in Munich before our university term started in London. Actually, Kirk and Mitch went to Austria for a couple days, but I decided to stay in Germany for various reasons. But that's another story...... read more

Day 22 (Tuesday, July 22) Located just 20 kilometers north-west of Munich is a sleepy Bavarian town. The quaint city streets are lined with mature trees forming a dense canopy over the span of the roadway. The town is situated just far enough away from Munich to be away from all the hustle and bustle. It is an everyday town. Normal. Average German men, women and families go about their lives in an average fashion. My bus ride from Munich took about thirty minutes. The scenery blurred by as I stared out the bus window. The ordinariness of the ride later proved to be the definition of irony. Fifty years ago, young men the same age or younger than me would have travelled down the same ordinary roads, passed through the same sleepy town and had ... read more

Day 20 (July 21, 1997) Beer. Is that enough of a reason for one to visit a city? People decide to visit places for all sorts of reasons. Some go to New York to see a statue of some lady holding a flashlight. Others travel to China to walk on a wall. Many tourists come from across the world to my hometown, Toronto, just to see the world’s largest phallic symbol, the CN Tower. Why not travel to a city because they are known to serve a good pint of ale? Sure there were many other reasons to include Munich on my itinerary. This was the place where the Beer Hall Putz, Adolf Hitler first tried to take over the world. I think that most of the patrons just thought he was a drunken loon and ... read more

Day 19 I awoke to the familiar sounds that plagued my stay in Prague. No, it wasn’t Ox-lady rampaging through my room looking for her proverbial pecuniary oats. It was the ceaseless trickle of raindrops rapping upon the window-pane directly above my head. With my ambition battered once again, I lay back on my cot and used the time to reflect on which direction the wind would take me next. One thing was for certain, it was time to vacate this drenched and forsaken land. I was heading for higher ground and escaping this soggy mess. Coincidentally, when the rest of the household awoke, they also looked outside the window and decided to follow my lead. The next place that I wanted to visit could be viewed upon as even more of a downer than Prague ... read more

This is continued from my Amsterdam page. We woke up about 90 minutes outside of Munich. It was my first sights of Germany and I was loving it. I just sat there and watched the scenes go flying by. As we approached Munich for the first time we packed up and got ready to go. Our plan was to go to Fussen and see Neuschwanstein. But first we needed to get train tickets, breakfast, and also see if we could see some sights of Munich. My first views of this train station were amazing to me. I love the way it looks and how it is set up. We arrived on a track on the right hand side. After getting off the train we made our way to the information booth and then bought tickets to ... read more

An Excerpt from the Travel Journal of Nigel Fox circa 1925 Entry 16 -- The Putsch "As head of the Triumvirate, I am your true leader. In many influential circles there are those who believe that the restoration of a strong state will be sufficient. I say no, a thousand times no . . . " The politician's speech droned on. He was totally unaware of the revolution that was unfolding around him. Oberland troops surrounded the hall and the auditorium itself was infiltrated. Many of the government security forces were loyal to the Kampfbund. Hans’ simple plan was working perfectly. "Again I say no, a thousand times no. Even the strongest man empowered with the greatest authority cannot save the nation without the energy and enthusiasm of the people. Were we to attempt to lead ... read more
