It is bedtime and I am not a betting woman . Apart from the odd flutter on the Grand National or a sweep at work to pick the winner of Strictly Come Dancing I rarely bet . However, I bet tomorrow the Works of Fiction the weather forecasters will offer us more rain, more dampness and more cold. They can be pretty accurate at times and totally wrong at others so what will tomorrow bring.? What happened to the long range weather forecasts we used to have? . More technology now available and yet the writers of the Works of fiction get the forecast wrong many many times. Were they wrong when we woke up? Nope, rain again. Damp again and down right cold. As we ate breakfast any thoughts of going east to Bratislava went ... read more

14 June 2018 Today is spent entirely on the river. For me, it's a chance to try to catch up with the accursed blog. We have now entered the Main River and are officially over the continental divide. Consequently we are travelling downstream, heading basically westward in long serpentine loops. The terrain here alternates between flat areas that are extensively farmed and more rugged areas. The principal crop is grapes for wine. Even on the steepest slopes, terraced vineyards of mainly Riesling grapes predominate. We stop briefly in Wertheim to pick up our evening's entertainment (more about him later). Other significant towns we pass include Miltenberg and Aschaffenburg. It's hard keeping the "bergs" and the "burgs" straight. As I somewhat vaguely knew before, "berg" means mountain and "burg" means town. But the choice for German place ... read more

We spent the day docked in Wertheim on the Main River. There was a glass blowing demonstration and then a tour in the cute little town of Wertheim, pronounced “Ver-time”. Then we had free time to roam around and do some shopping, soooooo, that’s what we did! I might have to get rid of some clothes that I brought so I can take home my new clothes; or maybe ship them home. We also went to a local home in a nearby village, pronounced “Willage”, and got to spend time with a lovely couple in their home. I swear, the folks over here are so historically knowledgeable. I just love listening to them, and their accents are fun too! Since I didn’t spend any time talking about the food, you’re probably wondering if they’re now starving ... read more

Today we came to the end of the Romantic road and with a little sadness planned our next few days. We decided on a camp site for the night just down the road from an outlet superstore. So retail therapy planned for morning plus a visit to a high ropes centre just round the corner. After enjoying a very good meal at the on site restaurant we headed back to the van to watch a video, the chosen video being Ted. Ill tell you what I think about it tomorrow. Night night campers.... read more

This is a lazy morning – late breakfast and while away time on my balcony. Unfortunately, the sun deck is closed because it is too high to fit under the bridges of the Main. They even take down the railings and lower the wheelhouse by hydraulics. After lunch we followed our interests. Because there were no available mooring spaces at Wertheim, we disembarked in a small town up river and were bussed to our destination. Ian and I hiked up to a ruined castle with a guide, and Deirdre and Barbara wandered around town. Our guide, Eric, stopped at quite a few sites in town and provided good anecdotal-style history lessons, almost as if he were there. Towards the end of the tour, he told us that Wertheim was spared bombing during the war because the ... read more
