Quiet Brugge is quite a change from noisy, hectic Amsterdam.  People go home at about 7 at nite.  Amsterdam had only one choice for beer: Heinikin.  Even a small bar in belgium has 50 kinds of beer.. all good and all cheap. But Brugge is a really cool place...it's europe's best preserved medevil city.  There's lots of canals and old churches... however the tourists far outnumber the locals... A city that I liked better than Brugge was Ghent which had the same beauty to the city but with a more vibrant feel to the city.... read more

After several days of crash course emersion with a new group, a day off in the countryside to unwind was an order. I had enough credits on my Geneva transit card to make it to the outlying French vineyards. Personal hopes of also finding cheaper groceries were dashed when I realized that I had chosen to venture out on a Sunday. A huge supermarket that doubtless had cheaper goods was nicely sealed up due to the day of the week. I thus had to be content with walking through wine country and feeding horses etc. The border with France is not marked if one is on trails (I found out I had crossed the border via some other people on a hike). The border crossing has (French) border guards stationed at it, but there is no ... read more

Before leaving Flights direct from Dublin to Lyon used to be a dream. Until 28 or 29 March, and then it became reality. Suddenly you can go a whole lot of interesting (but previously awkward to get to) places and Lyon is one of them. I think the first time I heard of Lyon it was in some novel I read when I was about 13, about a family silk company. After that, it was mainly football, and some of my college friends spent their year abroad there. I've never been there though. I'm going there this weekend. I've been planning it a while. I went to Paris something like six times last year, and now, I'm broadening my horizons slightly. So this time Lyon. I know little bits of information about it: obviously it was ... read more

8 April 2004 Thursday. We caught the 7:15 am P&O ferry from Dover to Calais, where we lost an hour due to time change. We drove directly to Paris where we fought traffic to the center of the city. We found a perfect parking spot at the lower end of the fountains in front of the Palais de Chaillot, across from the Eifel Tower. We caught the metro to the Louvre, where our goal was the Mona Lisa, which was quickly accomplished. So after 30 minutes in the Louvre, a record but we had been there many times before, we walked across the Place de la Concord, through the Tuileries Gardens, and up the Champs Elysee, where the girls shopped for clothing. Along the way we were accosted by hawkers who wanted to sell the girls ... read more

Here's a long update that covers a bout a week, Get comfortable and enjoy! I need to catch you all up on a few days. I think I last entered comments having just arrived in Gryon. I checked in for 1 night and w/in 5 minutes had extended it to 2. The girl working there had just finished her undergrad pre-med and was enrolled in med school. She had been there 3 months and was working on defering her enrollment for the next year to stay there. Bert runs the place, there are a group of flight attendents staying there, a bohemian type guy named bo, who had just finished highschool, but seemed much older. He and I went hiking and had a great time. There were also a pair of girls from Ireland, a guy ... read more
