I as in Clermont-Ferrand "Michelin Capital" (pop. 140,000 - night-life pop - 8) for the 3rd EGEE User Forum, basically when all of the people who are actually using the technology get together, explain how they are using it and outline progress and issues. There were some interesting demos there as well. I chaired the session of Finance and Multimedia on the first day and gave a summary presentation on the final day's plenary session. The city itself was quite nice, very clean and visually beautiful, there was just no one around after 10:30pm. Coming from Italy and speaking with another Italian, it was quite a shock to not hear a car horn for a week straight, I haven't been able to hear myself think like that in a long time. Travel woes: This seems to ... read more

Hey there gang, Well here I am in chamnix and it seems we have lived a lifetime since the last blog, so perhaps the best place is to begin at the end and work from there. So I find myself here in Chamonix, the famous ski town in the French Alps bordering France and Italy... and it's a cool place ! - but not literally, Wal and i think it might be the warmest place we've been since Hawaii which for me is very welcome. Some may say it's practically tropical here at the 5 degree mark ( mental note must reduce clothing to include only TWO layers of thermals prior to applying enormous fur lined jacket) but as you can imagine the weather is not so great if you're searching for good snow. I know ... read more

Bonjour .... At last count we have visited 9 museums and 6 churches in the few days we have been here. I hit church #6 today ... Brenda says that as long as the number of museums is greater than the number of churches; she won't toss me into the Seine... I am safe so far but there is one more day to go so I may have to do some swimming before we leave! I probably should not mention this, but I am going to do so anyway .... you remember that we tripped over the Louvre a few days ago? Well, today we lost the Eiffel Tower. Don't ask us how it happened; it just did. We do not even know know we managed to lose the largest landmark in the country since we ... read more

A weekend of new events. Saturday lunchtime: photo call up by the church for Laroque Autrement, a Gauche Tout! to launch the 23 candidates onto the political scene. Apparently, parties have to produce 23 candidates for local elections - neither more nor fewer - and Mal is now on the list. Bit of a barney about which of the two of us it should be: in the end, Mal’s better French won out against the fact that the list now has 9 women against 14 men, and my presence could have made it more even. What has he got into? We shall perhaps know more after Tuesday evening and the next meeting…. Oh, and after that we went off to Limoux. Their Lenten carnival lasts from early January and into March, so I imagine everyone in ... read more

And to continue on with Dan's 30th birthday extravaganza, haze took me to the south of France for the weekend!! We stayed in Nimes, in what was more like a beautiful museum / private palace than a hotel, called the secret garden. We travelled by car through many small towns and wineries in Provence - where some of my favourite reds live. Also stopped off for a few hours in Avignon, marvelled at the Pont du Gard and a 2,000y.o olive tree nearby. Not to mention the delicious French cheese, wine, olives and bread we picked up at every stop along the way... mmmm so good A stunning end to an exceptional birthday celebration ... read more

At the invitation of our neighbour Lulu, we went on another organised walk yesterday, with some rather older citizens of Lavalanet and Laroque. Dun , the village we started from, is a pretty community set among the rolling hills between us and Pamiers and Mirerpoix- a little more distant from the Pyrenees than us, but quite 'English' in its gentle appeal. We walked along country tracks, through ancient hamlets, and near the ruined castle of Dun, enjoying the comapny of quite a varied group of people. We have learnt nothing about hiking in France. We really should have known by now..... Abiout 2 and a half hours into the walk, our leader suddenly said 'This place'll do', and sat us down in a tree-lined spot, for...well, we supposed a rest. But no! There were a dozen ... read more

I don’t want you all to think that life is just a long succession of pleasant rambles in the Pyrenees, punctuated by splendid meals and enjoyable interludes in bars. Oh, no! There is work to be done too. The potager requires urgent and unending attention. One edge of it overlooks a public footpath, courtesy of a high retaining wall, and a wretched shrubby ivy with a powerful root system is determined to conquer first the wall, then the world. It might have stood a chance of winning if the local gendarmerie hadn’t alerted us to the fact that Complaints Had Been Made about the lierre overhanging the path. It’s been a blessing really, as we now see that the plant, left to conquer on unchecked, would have loosened and finally felled the retaining wall. So we’re ... read more

Yesterday was Mal’s birthday, so we celebrated by joining our walking group in a healthy walk. It should have been walking with raquettes in the snow, and a new experience for us-, but …… no snow. So an alternative meant driving over to nearby Foix and taking it from there. The Walking Club is a fun group. About 25 or so regularly turn up for the Sunday walks - not always the same people, but you can count on Roger the President, a likeable and jolly retired fireman: Nicolas, who likes to yodel and whoop on mountain walks in such a way that his voice echoes and reverberates round the surrounding slopes - we met him in Lavelanet market last Friday as he is one of the council road sweepers: Andrée is a retired teacher, with ... read more

I found a video of the Francoise de Panafieu rally on her website! Now you can understand what I was talking about, and you can even hear some of fantastic pump-up music. At the time 1:54 and 8:58 of the third video, you can clearly make out the back of my head (blonde ponytail, light blue t-shirt). The last part of the video is worth watching anyway. The address is www.panafieu2008.fr. The video is the 3rd part of "Meeting Salle Equinox". More updates coming as soon as I finish working my way through the giant pile of internship apps that are due soon! and PARIS comes out tomorrow!!... read more

Actuaaaally, we dodged Paris, but believe it or not, there are still other places to go in France! From Venice we took the train to the city of Montpellier in the south of France to meet up with Kristena's friend Jordan ... and we pretty much spent the time just visiting and seeing bits and pieces of the area. We hunted for a man painting a picture in a beret and red and white striped shirt, fumbled through some pathetic french sentences, chomped on a baguette, sipped cafe au lait from dinky shot glasses, and ate copious amounts of lunch meat smothered with cheese! The ladder is known as "Raclette," it is a traditional French meal served mostly in the winter, and is similiar to cheese fondue, but with wine and potatoes too. From the south ... read more
