This middle ages city is well preserved and so pretty. It is here where St. Joan of Arc was sold to the British who tortured her as a witch and burned her at the stake. It seems that no one spoke up on her behalf. The church built in her memory is an incredible piece of very modern architecture in the town of gothic churches, The cathedral of Notre Dame (so frequently painted by Monet) dominates the city scape. Monet painted it again and again, working with it as much for "light study" as for subject matter. Today, we opted out of the optional tour to a Caldavos apple orchard and cider farm lunch. It's nice to balance really good guided tours with some time to explore on our own. Thankful for comfy shoes, good maps ... read more

Hey everybody! Well, I just wanted to update a bit, unfortunately cannot post pictures on this entry but I will try on another computer at some point! So, we left London early on Saturday morning, Aug.8. We arrived in France via the Eurotunnel quite quickly, spent most of our first day travelling. We made a brief stopover on Saturday in Iepres, Belgium to see the Menen/Menin Gate. It is a war memorial site for the soldiers who were lost/unable to be identified for WW1. It was very interesting and I even found a Lenz from Canada. Originally my family name was Lenz but after several years in Canada, became Lentz. So, I am not sure if it was a family member or not but I found it interesting anyhow! We have stayed in Bed and Breakfast ... read more

Drove 40 minutes to Rouen, an historic city full of half timbered houses. Most famous for its Cathedral, and to being the place Joan of Arc was captured and executed by burning at the stake. Visited these places, as well as walking down many interesting laneways. Most shops were closed for Easter. Also visited the plague cemetery, where a mass grave of plague victims is in a fully enclosed courtyard. Finally the Joan of Arc tower, where she was held captive before her execution. Went home via Lyons-La-Foret, an old, scenic village. ... read more

Well, I remember being told the stories about Joan of Arc when I was just a kid in grade school. That was back when the nuns thought they could motivate the kids by giving them balloons and gold stars. Thank goodness, todays employers of high quality professionals would never insult their employees with such a tactic in todays highly competitive work place. But, as usual, I digress. Rouen is evidently where Joan of Arc, a 19 year old was captured, tried and burned at the stake for heresy. Of course, a few years later the Catholic Church thought better of it and canonized her a saint. Hey, my bad!!!! Nothing personal, ok??? Rouen is a good sized city and they say it is the fifth largest port in France. I guess the same way St. Louis ... read more

Ooookay, one more week to go and we'll be on our way. Skills at this time are One-thing in the Moment and Focus on what works. At this time it means to get clear about what I am taking and make it as streamlined as possible. No over-packing. Did that when we went to Ireland several years ago. What a mistake but of course since I'd never traveled in the British Isles before, or anywhere that far out of the country, that had so many stairs connected to trains, planes and everything. Seems the trains are all built underground in London so up the stairs with luggage and down and up and down. Not again. (this isn't well written but you probably follow my rambling) So that is my job for this week. Pack and get ... read more

Today is sweden's nation day, so let's break out a smorgasbord of celebration! Apparently, it's not a big deal in Sweden, so we'll settle with going into town tonight and maybe some pastry at lunch. We are planning on going to the D-Day beaches this weekend, along with mount saint michelle. Today is the 64th anniversary of the landings. There are a few celebrations going on in Bayeux this weekend, but nothing too major since they are gearing up for next year I believe. I finally got a computer and internet, so hopefully I will post a little more often now. I'll attach some more pictures and videos as well. I found this cheese with garlic and herbs in it, it's just simply amazing. If you're a garlic lover, you'll bless this cheese. I still haven't ... read more

The hookah bar was very interesting. The atmosphere is quite relaxing, plush benches that are low to the ground with pillows, surrounding a few tables in the middle. A big ‘sheet’ (silk?) billows down from the ceiling, producing an upside down arch. And they had some music on. There were a number of these rooms, tucked away in the corners. Definitely a middle eastern feel to the place. The hookah was big, about 3 feet tall. We smoked some mango tobacco, marijuana is illegal in france too (gary). It’s very smooth, you definitely missed out in Istanbul brother eric. We had some tea as well, a bunch of different flavors. It came in a pretty big sized pot with a glass. We had a lot of fun, I will definitely have some in Instanbul. If you ... read more

The sun finally came out yesterday, first time since I got into Rouen. The weather is nice, high 60's, but it has been raining a lot. Our lab flooded yesterday, some pump broke and water came in from the ceiling, it was a big mess. I went shopping for the first time the other day, there is a place like wal mart that is close. A baguette costs 0.32 euro and I bought a bottle of wine for 1.08! (Mom, you could save like 20 dollars a week here!) They have entire aisle for cheese only and then another aisle for yogurt and pudding. You can buy assorted samples of cheese, I got six pieces, about 20 to 30 grams each (1 oz) for less than 2 euro. When the cheese smells rotten, then you know ... read more
