Today is Sunday in Milano. The weather finally felt like fall a couple of days ago. The family keeps telling me that October is usually FFFRRREEDDDDDO (freddo-cold) but this october has been down right hot at times. the trees have turned their beautiful colors and makes me miss the colors of the Omaha fall. Well, i told you all that Halloween had arrived in Italy. well kind of. It has become a reason for the young people to have a party. they dress up in goofy costumes and parade around, get their picture taken and thats about it. the children as far as Ive seen are not involved. so no cute costumes on the kids. I am virtually packed and ready to go. Ernesto didnt want me to leave today and be gone all day as ... read more
Yesterday was a resting day. I was just beat. Ive been trying to study as much as possible and also to see the beautiful sights here in Milano. I have seen some amazing things so far and feel so lucky. I go home and Ernesto educates me further on the history. He doensàt like using the cool dictionary he bought but Siria and I really use it just about all the time. He mutters something shakes his head and kind of shuffles out of the room. I agree it is frustrating to not be able to converse naturally. However it is what it is and Siria starts these conversations here and there and before you know it I am hearing abou the family health issues, or the personal troubles of the people in the family. Itàs ... read more
Today was my last language lesson and as a person might expect, I felt like I understood a concept that had been stumping me over and over. Oh well, Lydia (Leeedeeeeah) was a great maestra, teacher, and I will maybe ask for her again next time I come into Milano. I have made it my job to see the things in Milano that people talk about. I went to the chiesa (church) where the original Last Supper by Michealangelo Da Vinci . It is a mural basically painted on a large wall of the church. I have seen this picture a jillion times in books etc. (et-chet-air-ah hee hee) but it really was an interesting experience. I was able to get a viewing time right about the time I needed just by accident. A tour guide ... read more
ok well iàm here in an internet kind of center instead of the mc donalds or at the school. the school teachers are having a meeting today so there will be no class. ok, just like the US. the woman who runs it is a living doll. definitely italian but argentinian born. her name still escapes me. she gave me a caffe today just because i guess. what a sweetie. her inglese is pretty darn good. she helps me when i have any kind of issue. today the computer next to me went kaput! and she was down there trying to get it going. iiyiyiyi mammma mia!! no kidding, she and many others say that...so fun. she compliments my poor attempts and i am not to proud to say the BRAVA comments help a lot....guess the ... read more
Today is rainy in Milano. Kind of humid even though my aunt holds herself and says, "....freddddo".ccllld It's not really. I think some of it is, that it isn't usual weather for here in the autumn. They don't use air conditioning. they like it warm. They acclimate to the warm seasons more than I think the average American does. I guess it would be better for the bank account if we weren't addicted to the warmish coolish temps when we are indoors.....but anyway, it's ok with me either way. I don't dislike cloudy days either. when I told her I liked the cloudy days, the rainy days and the warm sunny days and even snowy days she just looked at me... I taught her the English word "cozy" and it translates to "cosy" in Italiano...cool. she ... read more
In the last couple of days I can feel the Italian language sounding less foreign to my ears. I can listen to the new with Ernesto and kind of follow the gist of what is being said. yesterday was a day that will probably be material to tease me with for a long time. i had lost track of the days. Almost the whole day yesterday I thought it was Sunday. I got up to go to Mass (Messe) and saw there were very few people there. I didnt think much of that because Alberto had told me that most Italians arent religious much anymore. ok, so itàs full of older people (of which I am one!!) then i go home (a casa) and we have pranza (lunch) and Ernesto and Siria are doing their parental ... read more
ok, what a couple of days. wish i could say itàs been all great but its not. my uncle and aunt have been dealing with their health checkups, and i learned that they both have struggled with cancer and still worry about relapses....wow. they are not treating me like a tourist which of course is a good thing when its good but i want to see the tourist things too. the leonardo da vinci last supper is here and i want to see it. hmmm, so how to ask or at least find out which church its in without interet!!!! as you can see that is one of the big downsides. no internet available to me. to get online is a great big deal. today i am at the public library and had one hour. 45 ... read more
Today is Wednesday in milano. I got up at my normal time and was out the door on time to get to my class with a few minutes to get settled and wake up my brain. In order to get to my school I walk about 15 minutes maybe a little more depending how fast or slow i go. i get to the metro stop and take the underground train that is very similar to the train we took in paris with our daughter. it was very crowded this morning and i love to look at the people and listen to see if i can understand their conversations yet. way too early but i hope. Beggars are on the stairs going down the steps to the metro. beggars on the train this morning too. i laughed ... read more
ok, well this is continuing to surprise me that Northern Italy doesn't have internet and WIFI everywhere. I tried to get online yesterday at McDonalds and couldn't. Man, that place was jumping with the giovani (young people) of Milano. Wow. My cuginos (cousins) were explaining to me that the young here are interested in most things American. Hmmmm, ok, I guess that makes sense. We, as Americans, are interested in foreign people too. Of course it makes sense when you think about it. Today was my first class. I woke up at 6 and my uncle made me a caffe. He is concerned about me and wanted to be sure I'd be back by lunch:) (pranza). I'll be back by 1:00, but I'll need to not get lost today:) The class was fun. At first I ... read more
i arrived in milano friday and the process of getting to my uncles home was a crazy one. i have enjoyed the kindness of many people and my uncle and aunt are wonderful to me. the time has been a steady stream of family conversations that i understand and then am totally lost. my italian is hardly growing at all and i hope it will improve soon. i am writing this on an italian keyboad that every time i want to capitalize it looks like the italian accented way. what a mess for you to read. so i am writing without punctuation or capital letters. the family food is so similar to my own that i am happy to report not there is not much cultural shock that way. i have discovered that many italians like ... read more
