Heräsin klo 8.30. Hain Lidlistä vähän ruokaa. Aamupala parvekkeella. Bussimatka kesti sinne tunnin. Kävin heti uima-altaassa. Paluumatkan ajoin asunnolle kokonaan busseilla, ja jotkin bussit matelivat ruuhkassa. Illan kiertelin vanhaakaupunkia ja poikkesin katsomassa Pirkkoa musiikkibaarissa.... read more

And it's Mum's Birthday ????❤ Packed our towel & togs, caught the tram to Garibaldi & then bus 15 to Villefranche. Being Saturday the place was busy, plus a cruise ship in the bay. Getting off the bus & near the info centre a brass band was entertaining a crowd.... all singing & laughing. A little wander up to the Citadel 16th Century. A mosaic exhibition took my interest. A beautiful day in the bay. Lots of beach lazing & European sunbathing. We found ourselves a nice spot with some rocks & sand. We are used to more space than what was on offer here. There were more people on the beach than in the water. Everyone wants a tan. Two swims later we redressed like everyone else does on the beach. Water much warmer than ... read more

We've been here for a few weeks now and have settled nicely into our little house in the hills. There is so much to see and do here. Some days we decide to venture out by car and some days we just want to go down to the village and walk around. Sound relaxing? Not always. The French (or whomever built these roads) must have measured the narrowest vehicle (or chariot drawn by one horse) at the time they built them and created the incredibly narrow width of all roads here accordingly. In order to expedite the drive up the hills (or corniches as they are referred to here) there are many back to back hairpins turns that are at steep inclines. The roads are so narrow that the novice driver will need to come to ... read more

Villefranche-sur-Mer It is supposed to rain today but our first glimpse outside gives no hint of wetness to come. The sun is shining and the sky is blue. It is hot and humid here at the Cote d'Azur. The house we rented can stay cool if you close the heavy metal outside blinds to keep the heat out, but we are here and the Mediterranean is calling so we venture outside to drive around. First we decided to go to Beaulieu Sur Mer to see if we can get some court time at the tennis club. We have traveled the short distance from Villefranche to Beaulieu many times but between last year and this year someone apparently decided to make some of our familiar streets one way. We couldn't get down to the beach and port ... read more

A real drawcard on the french riviera... We planned out a walk to Villefranche from Nice....one we had done many times. I opted for the bus to the top so I would only have to walk down.... We trammed to Place Garibaldi and walked to Port Lympia where there were plenty of buses heading in Menton direction. 5 mins up the hill we disembarked to walk the footpath that ran along the top of the cliffs. Cloudy day so it was just the right temperature for easy walking. Around the corner past the 'Batterie'. Quite a cliff side to make this road out of. As we started to descend we came across the 'Princess Grace' memorial of 1982-1983. A lovely view from here into the bay of Villefranche-sur-Mer. A cruise ship anchored, typical for this time ... read more

Yes...off to Villefranche! Beautiful sunny day we left home about 10am and trammed to Place Garibaldi and walked over to Promenade de Artes to catch the Bus 81 along the coast...good seat thanks John/Mary! Always a nice ride over the hill above the coastline to the otherside. You get a spetacular view of Villefranche bay as you come over the hill. Disembarked at Octroi stop on the top road by the markets and walked down to the Citadelle. A few people about. A nice walk through the gardens out of the heat. Took the walking track around the Citadelle to the base. At 28 degrees we didn't last long! so the journey in reverse...the transport system in Nice is so easy & we managed to get a 50-75% discount off our train tickets for both of ... read more

The Voyager was scheduled to dock in Monte Carlo but due to the Grand Prix race the port was full. So instead we anchored off Villefranche-sur-Mer. This was a stroke of luck for us. While we really enjoy Monaco, Villefranche is a very special place on the French Riviera. My sister Judy’s favorite movie was filmed here. "An Affair to Remember" is a beautiful romance story and continues to lure fans to this lovely town. A prominent citadel covers one side of town and an ancient Cathedral towers over the rest of the village. Villefranche was home port for the U.S. Navy 6th Fleet for years after the end of WWII. Navy ships still call here as the bay has the deepest natural harbor in the Mediterranean. We came here in 2008 with our retired commander ... read more

Sleepless nights should NOT be spent reading The Shining with the soft, dull snore of fellow roommates punctuating the silence at unexpected intervals. It does nothing for the nerves. Thus passed my second night in Nice. In the morning I neither felt rested nor inspired, but I was determined to shake my funk and get out to see the beautiful gem of Southern France. In Nice, one can feel the taste of Italy: terra cotta roofs, gelato on every other corner, the heavy aroma of pizza floating in and out with the sea breeze. But just take a step out of the city...and Italy follows you. My wanderings took me along the coast towards the highly popular principality (stingy about that fact, they are) of Monaco. I happened to choose the same bus as a group ... read more

When we hopped onto the train we realized that we didn't have seats, and it was a good 4 hour journey. So, we sat next to one another hoping no one would claim the seat. As expected, first a gentleman and then a woman passenger came to claim their seats. Both of them who first spoke in French and then switched to English when they realized we were not natives, were nice enough to take other open seats but we knew if other passengers came to claim those seats, we would have to move. So, for the first 30 minutes it was an uneasy journey as we had to be ready to move at any second. Fortunately, everything worked out those both of them had to move at least twice and didnt even ask us for ... read more

5th - 10th October We arrived back to Port Napoléon on 5th October. We had some work to do before leaving and continuing our sail. Tuesday 7th October Finally we departed Port Napoléon and sailed to Pointe du Bon Renaud. On the way Lars saw a submarine just going into Marseille. The weather has turned chilly at nights but has been warmer in the days. Our journey so far: Pointe du Bon Renaud Port de Mandelieu - La Napoule In Port de Mandelieu - La Napoule we were very fortunate in visiting with a lovely couple Per and Louise. It was Louise’s Birthday which is why they were in France at this time. Per came to the harbour to collect us and we had a lovely evening with friends. Louise and Per had made a lovely ... read more
