Very nice day in the south of France, visiting the small town of Villefranche. Nowhere to dock, so we were tendered ashore in a little ferry boat. Easy to understand why this area (near Nice, Monte Carlo, Monaco) gets so many rave reviews - beautiful, quiet, and peaceful. We spent a couple hours ashore while we walked around and let the kids stick their feet in and splash around the cool Mediterranean waters. Went back into France today, Ken (our GPS) took a detour around Monarco but that was for the best, the Grand prix was on the weekend so it would have been chaos. Nice would also be really busy as the film festival was on so we stopped at Ville Franche-sur-mur. It was quite nice but being a Monday it was a little too quiet. Most of the shops were shut and it was a drizzly day. We wandered around the port area laughing at the rich people as they hopped off the boats that had bought them to shore from their big fancy cruisers. They were being helped off by crew in uniform, dressed in their designer clothes and hobbling along the cobbled streets in their high heels. If only they knew how silly they looked. ... read more
Port at Villa Franche-sur-mer


After touring France and spending some time in the area around Nice and along the Riviera a couple of years ago, we decided to take it easy today while we were anchored off Villefranche. We slept in and finally took a tender off the ship in the early afternoon. We had a nice lunch and walked the streets and beach of this beautiful seaside town. Once again the streets were narrow and curving, carved into the side of the mountains that rise out of the Mediterranean. The day ended with our final formal night for dinner. This included a final recognition of all our servers and waiters… and a flaming baked Alaska for dessert! The show tonight was after dinner, so we enjoyed a marvelous montage of singing and dancing numbers. The quality really was top-notch ... read more
