I had to leave Anils place fairly early as he had work but it worked out pretty well since I have some stuff to do before my 1pm train ride out of here. I did a little research into the Swiss part of my trip and checked out some trains and hostels and what not. I also bought another larger USB disk drive so I can safely store all my pics. So I am just going to chill in this internet cafe uploading pics until it is time to depart. I do not know if I mentioned this before but I originally was supposed to go to Aix-en-Provence and couchsurf with a woman there but a few hours before my train there I got a message from her saying she could not host me due to ... read more

Sunday 24.1.210 day 102 Provence We drove to Aix de Provence who famous residents have include painter Paul Cezanne and novelist Emile Zola. It is a very pretty tree line town. We then went to Avingon it once was the papal seat of power and we saw the palais des papes the is encircled by a 4.3km of stone ramparts. We then went to Marsella and saw the Basilica of Notre dame. The Basilica sits above Marsella is the second largest city in France on top is a gigantic statue of merry and Jesus the statue is 9.72m and weighs 9,796 kg the wrist measurements of the baby Jesus is 1.1 meter. In Marsells we saw markets selling fish right off the boats we saw ferries so Africa ... read more

When I first walked down the main boulevard of Aix-en-Provence I thought to myself 'Ah, so HERE's France'. Sadly, apart from that one street, Aix wasn't as pretty or quintissentially french as I'd been led to believe. Also, because tourist season was over, a lot of the things worth visiting were closed. I did get to see the artist Cezanne's studio though! I'm not totally mad about his art but it was quite amazing to look down at a table and statue which are depicted in so many of his still lifes. What really struck me though was the paint smeared jacket and worn hat on a hook in the corner of the room. They looked like they'd only just been taken off. I got a real sense of this being a space which was thoroughly ... read more

Our last night in Nice was non-descript aside from an absolutely delicious meal at a little place in the Old Town called 'Le Resto'. I couldn't resist doing the menu, given that for around 20€ I'd get 3 courses, so I started out with some nice crisp bread with an anchovy pate and an olive tapenade for spreading. Both were excellent. For my main dish I opted for the Ravioli Niçoise, choosing to lean a little toward Italy and check out some of Nice's pasta offerings. This dish was incredible - the little pouches of dough almost melted in your mouth and were doused in delicious oil and herbs, primarily fresh parsley. Inside was beef and who knows what else, but whatever it was was awesome. For dessert I had a tiramisu-inspired chocolate mousse - very ... read more

Saturday 31st October Aix - en - Provence and the food Gretchen reckoned there was some of that sort of music that kept her awake in the night but I didn’t hear it.We have had some very quiet locations of recent times and well behaved neighbours in next door rooms,if there has been one,so a night with boom boom music is out of the ordinary for us. It looks as though we will be greeted with fog each morning while we are in Trets as it is that sort of weather pattern with still air, warm days but cool nights.Never mind we are sure it will lift by the time we want to venture out on our sightseeing trip today. After breakfast we went down to reception to use the laptop on the internet and make some ... read more

Well, after a ton of planning and much anticipation, I HAVE FINALLY ARRIVED IN AIX! I was greeted at the Marseille Airport on Saturday morning by a student from CROUS, an organization that helps students with residences, jobs, etc. I was at first very taken aback by the "kiss on each cheek" greeting, but she was really nice. We took the bus to my dorm, situated in the Cit é Universitaire. I am in "Gazelle" residence, in Pavillon 3 (there are 7 Pavillons). My room is kinda old and not the cleanest place I have ever seen but it's definitely spacious. After unpacking a few things I sent out to find the "ED", which the student who picked me up from the airport informed me is the cheapest supermarket, so I could pick up some cleaning ... read more
