An updated trip or entry will NOT include a note like this. Thanks and enjoy! For those of you, dear readers, who have just started reading this blog, the reason why I was in Europe between August 25, 2006 to May 20, 3007 was because I was studying abroad in France. I spent the first semester in a program called CIEF in Dijon, located in the Burgundy region from August 25, 2006 to January 18, 2007 (for more information, please refer to the blog entries entitled "The Arrival," "Cathedrals, Dukes and Monestaries," "First Taste of Wine," "A Day in My Life," and "The Holidays in France-The ... read more

Updated trips and entries will NOT include a note like this. Thanks and enjoy! January 17, 2007- I was finishing up all the packing I needed to do in order to move from Dijon to Aix-en-Provence in order to enroll in a different foreign exchange program. I had been planning this for two months now because I learned in November 2006 that I would not be able to enroll at the Universite de Bourgogne (University of Burgundy) during the Spring semester as I had anticipated. If I really wanted to, I would have had to enroll for the Fall 2007 semester and stay for a year! There ... read more

Right now we are in Aix-en-Provence. We returned about an hour ago from the restaurant Hippopotamus. We wanted to eat at a more authentic French place, however, at a lot of restaurants we have found that the eating doesn't start until 7:00 pm, which is getting close to the kids bedtime. After asking around if we could eat, we decided to go to the hippo place and we arrived there at 6:00 pm. There is a good thing and a bad thing about eating in France. The good thing is that things are done at a leisurely pace. The bad thing is that we can't afford to be that leisurely when we have kids. We ordered a 3 course meal and it took us 2 hours to complete are meal. Half an hour past the kids ... read more

Let me set the scene: The country house, a modest place covered in a bit of strangling ivy, sits on a forested hill somewhere in Alpes de Haute-Provence, surrounded by small fields of golden wheat, a patch of vineyard, and stands of pear and fig trees. The view into the valley below includes swaths of bright lavender and picturesque villages perched on rock promontories. About ten people are clustered around a table set under a tree in the garden, the sun streaming through the leaves and dappling the cheese, bread, and wine spread on the oilcloth. A woman plays the accordion; a bearded man strums a guitar in accompaniment. Others, while playing cards, sing along when they recognize the tunes. Not far away, another group toss shiny pétanque balls at a walnut-sized target inexplicably called a ... read more

Today was going to be a busy day with a visit to Aix-en-Provence. Advice from travellers before us was to make sure we visited the Saturday morning market and hunt out Joe selling cheeses. We were a bit later than planned because of deviations and weren’t sure where to find it, but following the crowd soon had us in the middle of this fantastic market. Being a bit late, the market was starting to wind down and we couldn’t find Joe but did find his cheese-selling mate. After a bit of a wander around the stalls we collected our bread, cheese, nectarines and red currants for a bench lunch in the plane tree lined boulevard and watched the crowds. The place was humming with several activities – a choir performing near the moss fountain, children helping ... read more

Yüksek se... read more

We are on the road again. this time we have headed to Millau to drive across the famous Millau bridge which goes across the Tarn river and valley. It really is the most handsome of bridges or viaducts. It was quite a drive to get there that after a little explore of the town we decided to stay the night. There was the promise of a huge market the next day. the town itself is quite high up. In fact you climb to 830 metres. The town is in the valley. Quite a wealthy area manly sheep and grapes. We spent the afternoon exploring the town. that night we had a wonderful dinner at a tiny little restaurant that just specialized in the local cuisine. The proprietor was quite chatty and was very keen on the ... read more

Today I spent the day in Aix-en-Provence. This is actually one of the places that I was most looking forward to visit. The reason being that when I was 13 I had a pen pal called Florence and she was from Aix. I don’t know if back at that age, I ever had the notion that I would one day make it to Aix-en-Provence. Aix is relatively close to Marseille needing only a 45 minute train ride to get there (and of course much faster if you hop on the TGV … but there’s a budget … so no TGV’s for these little jaunts!). The small Aix-en-Provence train station is located very close to the old part of Aix and the most interesting part of this town, by far. My visit would start at the Cours ... read more

From Pas De Le Case to Provence, 22nd December to 13th January The last 23 days seem to have gone rather quickly. First Christmas, then my birthday, then a quick zoom across Southern France to Northern Italy to take in a week skiing, it all just happens without you really noticing. We’re currently in Provence. Somewhere I never really thought I’d ever come to. And somewhere I now want to return to. It’s not that I had anything against it, apart from the French (and I’m even warming to them, weird eh!), it’s just that I thought that there wasn’t all that much here. How wrong you can be. Anyway, back to it, Christmas and my Birthday was spent in Aurignac, near the French Pyrenees. Having family dotted all over the place it’s excellent to be ... read more
