After a busy day yesterday with the trip to Monaco, today we needed a recharge. And we wanted to do somthing that was fun for the kids. So we decided to head to the beach. There are lots of world class beaches in Nice, Antibes, St. Tropez and other places along the Cote d'Azur, but we were looking for something a little closer to our base in Aix-En-Provence and we wanted to avoid the crowds. Charlotte discovered just what we were looking for in a great little travel blog. We headed to a local beach, St. Croix. It took us about 45 minutes to get there; just west of Marseille on the west side of a town called Sauset Les Pins. Access was very easy, parking was cheap (3.20 euro) and we it was not crowded ... read more

Genevieve: Today we went to the Pont du Gard, the Musee de Bonbons (the Haribo museum), and walked around Uzes, a small town in France. At the Pont du Gard, we saw the ancient Roman aqueduct, the river that it bridges (Gardon), and a museum about Roman engineering. At the Musee de Bonbons, we saw how the Haribo company started, the history of the owner, how the candy is made, the ingredients, the machinery, and of course we got free samples. In Uzes, we walked around the cute little town and saw lots of shops, bought ice cream and dinner (a rotisserie chicken). Unfortunately, I couldn't take many pictures because my camera battery died. I can get a new battery at a corner store though. You can see the few pictures I took today below.... read more

Well, already the weeks have whizzed by and I am about to start the last leg of the trip (apart from the flight to Melbourne and the Gull Bus home). We spent an inordinately beautiul week on Corsica with its strong separatist, independence movement. Like in some parts of Scotland and Wales, there are people who burn down (or in Corsica's case, blow up!) the houses bought by overseas people as holiday homes. The weather was beautiful, and we started the Mare a Mare Sud walking track from Porto Vecchio on the east coast with an 18 kilometre uphill walk. It was a lot harder than expected and our backpacks were probably heavier than they needed to be. Better organised people were having their luggage transported from one gite (lodging) to the next and only carrying ... read more

A Day of Food. Today is all about food and cooking. We are taking a cooking class dedicated to the regional food and cooking traditions. Prior to this trip I did not know much about provincial cooking, except for Herb d Provence. Before the cooking class we had to take a bath and get ready. Now I don’t normally about daily routine items like taking a bath, but here it is worth noting. While the hotel is wonderful, our particular room only has a bathtub. Yes there is a shower attachment, but there is no surrounding current. This means to take a bath you must either sit on the edge of the tub to shower, or sit in the tub and take half bath/half shower. The tub is also very narrow, so if you are the ... read more

May 2, 2012 We over slept a bit and Jerry woke up with a bad cold/allergies. What ever had started the day before had move to his chest. We packed and had breakfast (even though it was past serving time, they still served us our coffee and croissants). We then headed for out next stop Aix-en-Provence (pronounced X). Since it was only a short drive we took the back roads and through Avignon, the capital of Cotes du Rhone. Prior to getting to Avignon, we passed several partial castles, forts and other interesting sites, and of course vineyards. Avignon The old section of Avignon is completely behind the orginal walls of the City. Once you get in the walls the street become very narrow and hard to navigate even in a small car. We took one ... read more

Note: All of these trends are in reference to my observations during my study abroad year in France during the 2006/2007 academic year. Therefore, restaurant names and information may have changed as well as eating trends in France. For more updated blog entries and trips please refer back to this blog at a later date. Thanks and enjoy! For those of you who have been following my blog for a while, you have probably noticed that I write a lot about the food I eat. Those who know me well reading this will not be surprised because I love to cook and dine out as well. My study abroad year in France actually fueled my love for cooking from a mere necessity and interest to an art and obsessive hobby for me. The purpose of this ... read more
