I thought I'd try blogging for a change. I usually keep a paper diary which becomes more and more brief over the duration of the trip. I enjoy writing and don't do enough of it so maybe this will encourage me to record more of my experiences and feelings in structured sentences... :-)

And suddenly it's all over. Looking back over the last 7 weeks it's been an interesting mix of places, people and activities - lots of people to meet, lots to think about, plenty to do and take pictures of. The smaller camera I took allowed me to get some shots I wouldn't normally get but had its constraints on the other end of the photographic spectrum. Had some great Couchsurfing experiences in Budapest (thanks Adrian and Trond the dog), Corsica (thanks Arnaud) and Aix-en-Provence (thanks Pablo and Zoe and Kia the dog). My walking friends also enjoyed their first Couchsurfing experiences. This has been the longest return trip ever, having arrived at Charles De Gaulle airport in Paris at 1.30pm on Thursday. It's now 2.30pm on Saturday and I am still in Shanghai awaiting a flight ... read more

Well, already the weeks have whizzed by and I am about to start the last leg of the trip (apart from the flight to Melbourne and the Gull Bus home). We spent an inordinately beautiul week on Corsica with its strong separatist, independence movement. Like in some parts of Scotland and Wales, there are people who burn down (or in Corsica's case, blow up!) the houses bought by overseas people as holiday homes. The weather was beautiful, and we started the Mare a Mare Sud walking track from Porto Vecchio on the east coast with an 18 kilometre uphill walk. It was a lot harder than expected and our backpacks were probably heavier than they needed to be. Better organised people were having their luggage transported from one gite (lodging) to the next and only carrying ... read more

So it gets to the stage now when I am about to meet up with my mates from Geelong / Jan Juc and do the thing that started this trip off. I booked a central hotel room online from Milan and (despite the Cannes File Festival and the Monaco Grand Prix and the long weekend and the French train drivers' union action, managed to get from Milan to Marseille in 10 hours (usually 8). My mother advised me to tie one end of a piece of string to my wallet and the other end to my willy if I was going to stay in a place like that. She was pretty much right. Now I know where people go when others say: "get a room" - what a dive! Assuming Steph gets here from her Balkan ... read more

OK - I know. You've been missing the dulcet tones of text from afar. Well instead of going into detail, I'll give you a summary. I heard a sigh of relief - come on, own up! So I think I last blogged from Istanbul. It seems an eon ago. I took a two-day trip to Cappadocia in Central Anatolia (saw a few Anatolian shepherd puppies). Took a couple of day-tours, not usually my bag but I'd dashed off to Cappadocia - Land of beautiful horses - on a whim so I didn't organise any independent travel. Covered a few places of interest incuding the underground city where persecuted Christians used to live; the caves cut into the eroded sandstone under the basalt lava. Escaping Christians used to live here when the Romans came through. Underground churches ... read more

Actually I have blogged a few times but this site keeps cutting the blogs offor deleting them - I'm not a happy camper with this blog site. Click on 'Next Entry' in case it shows you more. I've also upload a a 'miniature effect' 5 second video (fun). So I think I last blogged from Istanbul. It seems an eon ago. Spending a little time this morning debating the next best things to do. I am considering a two-day trip to Capadoccia (Goreme) leaving tonight and coming back to Istanbul for a Hammam (wash in a bath) before heading out to Ireland. I just need to make sure I don't miss my flight. Ali, the hostel owner / manager will give me a recommendation and I will accept it since I haven't taken the trouble to plan it for myself. Last night Ali organised a street barbecue and a belly dancer on the rooftop garden. It sounds fascinating and it was good fund. Sitting in the street eating kofte and chicken with salad and rice was done by street light - I couldn't tell whether the meat was cooked but I a not dead or ill this ... read more

Today was a long walk day. I'd planned to get to the Rumeli Fortress on the west coast of the Bosphorus. Typically, I had intended to walk there and find some public transport back. From Sultanahmet I followed a hugely circuitous route down the hill via the Grand Bazaar (open today) and beyond that all the little shops that sell belt buckles, beads, mannequins, taps, cleaning equipment and garlic-crushers. From there it was a gravity-filled walk to the waterfront of the Golden Horn and a noisy walk across the Ataturk Bridge with all the buses and trucks. In a misguided attempt to avoid the backstreets, I followed the main roads up and down the hills (and there are many many hills which give an inclinometer a good workout) with a side trip along the boulevard to ... read more

A half day walk around the old city Once again, this city is delightful, interesting, diverse and familiar all at the same time. Delightful with the smell of fish cooking at a number of shops on wheels by the boat-busy Bosphorus. Interesting with the opportunity to shoot airgun pellets from the promenade at balloons, cans and bottles set up on the rocks by the Marmara Sea. Diverse with the collection of building styles from mosques and a French architectural style school to Roman remains and rotten wooden houses; from tall blocks of flats to low-rise apartments and the lovely winding streets with dozens of shopfronts, markets, street vendors, small cemeteries and the Topkapi palace public gardens. Familiar, partly because I have been here before, but more so because it's a dispersed city you can navigate by ... read more

I've just spent a week in Nanjing working with a new Coordinator of the program I manage. Left there Friday night and caught the bullet train to Shanghai. It took 1hr 10 mins mainly at 300kph. Smooth as silk - no clackety clack at all! Slept on the waiting room seats for a couple of hours and flew out around 7.15 this morning. I've basically followed the sun around the earth because after 9 hours flight it was only lunchtime in Dubai. After a couple of hours in Dubai airport and a few more hours flying, I arrived at Ataturk airport at around 5.30pm. This should mean jet-lag I think, I'm now sitting in a cheap hostel near the Blue Mosque. The room is filled with Dutch, French, American, Swedish Japanese and Australian youngsters. I'm the ... read more

On a mission! A destitute family in the outer suburbs of Nanjng is in desperate need of supplies. Without them, the children will fade away and vanish. My mission is to bring those supplies to this poor and needy family so they can survive in the face of all adversity. This is the fifth time I have been to Nanjing - always for work. Usually I visit for two weeks. This time just a week. I choose to extend my visits here by a week or so each time to havea peek at other places. First a walk on the Lantau Trail on Lantau Island near Hong Kong. This included a visit to the village on stilts and a bouncy small boat trip to see the pink dolphins. After the next visit I went to Anhui ... read more
