We made a late-morning start today by catching the #69 bus, exiting at the Pont des Arts on the right bank of the Seine. This iconic little footbridge, which crosses the river between the Institut de France and the Louvre, was formerly festooned with thousands of monogrammed padlocks (known as "lovelocks") that were deposited on the railings of the bridge by visiting "lovers" from all over the world. It became a major problem over the years, as tons of padlocks had to be periodically removed by local officials. Finally, several years ago, the decision was made to end the practice by removing the railings and wire fences lining both sides of the bridge, and installing a wall that has no means of attaching locks. Now, for better or worse, the bridge is shorn of its "lovelocks" ... read more

We said a fond farewell to Nice and the French Riviera this morning before winging our way to Paris on an Air France jetliner. The 90-minute flight was a smooth one, but our experience at the Nice airport was not so nice. We've experienced many security checks, at many different airports, on our journey around the world. Inexplicably, Nice was the worst! For reasons unknown, the protocol required me to remove the toiletry items I had packed in a zip-lock bag, and then re-pack the items in one of the bags they provided that was half the size of mine. It was like trying to cram 5-pounds of dirt into a 3-pound bag, and I ended up tossing some items just to be done with it. Overall, it was the most time-consuming and frustrating security screening ... read more

Paris will be the last stop on our 74-day journey around the world, which began on April 16th when we departed Daytona Beach for San Francisco; then on to Tokyo, Beijing, Hong Kong, Sydney (Australia), Singapore, New Delhi, Athens (including a 3-day cruise in the Aegean Sea), and Nice (on the French Riviera). We documented our exploits on another travel blog platform that regrettably ceased operations during the trip, so our "Paris Finale" appears on this site. Our granddaughter Ashley joined us for a few days in Nice, and then accompanied us to Paris. It was her very first visit to the City of Light, and judging by the entries and photos that appear above, I think it's safe to conclude that she and Paris got along famously! Truth be told, we owe Ashley a debt ... read more

This entry by Tom. Today was our day to visit Paris. We strolled out of our hotel at about 9am and our first stop was the small supermarket just around the corner on the main road where we grabbed a bottle of OJ and a small pack of waffles for a quick breakfast. It was a bit of a hike to the nearest RER train station but we got there quickly enough by following a group of school kids who were obviously on a field trip who took a shortcut to a sidewalk over the massive train yards to the station. Only a few minutes and about €7 later, we were on the commuter rail link to the centre of the city. Exiting the huge Chatalet-Les Halles subway station took several minutes; there are 14 exits ... read more

This entry by Tom. It was a bit of a process but we made it to France and our hotel for the first two nights in Villeneuve-Saint-Georges. Caroline’s folks, then her sister Nathalie, drove us to the airport in Montreal. Checking in with our bikes went smoothly and our flight on a huge A330-300 on AirTransat departed for Paris more or less on time just after 10pm for an overnight trip across the ocean. We tried to get a bit of sleep but it’s not easy at the best of times and this was not the best of times as we were packed into steerage. I nodded off twice in between a movie (“Passengers”) and a few episodes of Anthony Bourdain’s “Places Unknown”. It was enough. After taking too much time to get us off the ... read more

It's been a while since I really posted, but my goal is to post Paris, Ischia, Capri, and Sorrento. I'm sitting on the bus on my way to Naples airport, so maybe a lofty goal :) To begin, Paris. I arrived on a red eye, which is a great option if you've slept. Unfortunately my flight left at 1pm Seattle time and arrived at 11pm Seattle time (8am Paris time), so no more than a quick nap for me. It worked out though because arriving in daylight was awakening. I met Paula in the customs line, and was presently surprised that at charles de gaulle airport delta priority gets a special customs line! Good thing because that line was loooooong (though 45min later Liz zoomed right through. Luck of the draw I guess.) Paula and I ... read more

We landed in Paris at about 4pm which was about an hour later than expected as our departure from Marrakech was delayed while we waited for our plane to turn up. Immigration was nice and quick and our bags popped out onto the carousel just as we arrived at the baggage carousel. We caught the Orly bus from the airport to Denfert Rochereau metro station and then caught the metro to Strasburg Saint Denis. After about a 5 minute walk we arrived at our AirBNB in the 2nd arrondissement. After checking into our AirBNB we set out towards Rue Montorgueil which was about a 5 minute walk away. Rue Montorgueil is a walking street which is lined with restaurants, bakeries, patisseries, cheese shops, wine shops and so on. We had planned to walk around for a ... read more

Our thoughts were that we would leave Paris the beginning of May, but the weather turned cold, rainy and windy so decided that we would stay a little longer as we aren’t on a real tight schedule. We even had our first thunderstorm of the season so a good day to stay on the boat and work on planning or trip through the canals. We have obtained quite a bit of information from listening to others that have been in the canals in previous years so putting that all together we are working out a tentative plan. We say tentative as each year it depends on how wet the winter was as to how much water there will be for traveling through some of the canals. That information is hard to predict so we will just ... read more

Our friends, Angelika and Gitti arrived on Saturday, April 22ndand stayed with us on the boat for a couple of nights and three days. It was a first for them to stay overnight on a boat and they adapted very well to it. We didn’t leave the dock, but even with staying in the marina there are things that you need to adjust to – showers on shore, climbing in and off of the boat, and just having less room with 4 people on a 40 foot sailboat. We figured it wouldn’t be a problem as they had camped on safari in Botswana so a sailboat would be a piece of cake! Unfortunately Bob was having some problems with his knee so the first day of exploration we did without him ... read more

We had read about a flower market that is held on Ile de la Cite every day, but that on Sunday’s they also sell birds. It sounded like an interesting place to aim for on a walk on Easter Sunday. It is located near Notre Dame and Sainte-Chapelle Chapel which is an interesting area added to it being a good destination. On our way we passed a lovely tea shop, so stopped for a pot of tea. There were numerous types of tea so with both of us choosing a different one to try; the tea was delivered with a very clever egg timer. It had 3 egg timers, one for 3 minutes, and another for 4 and the last for 5 minutes. We were informed how long we should wait for each of our teas ... read more
