Pont Aven Brittany 11thOct. How come artists pick pretty locations to practise their craft. A certain M Paul Gaugin pained here. When he saw some women doing the washing he did a picture and called it “les lavandieres a Pont Aven “ When I came to the same place there was no washer woman – only the flowing water if I want to DIY. The town guards its reputation as an artistic enclave with galleries aplenty. Since M Gaugin flexed his bristles here the area has become a natural magnet for artists like Emile Bernard. One who might not come to mind so easily was poet Xavier Grall. We strolled along the florally decorated promenade named after Grall. Definitely a place to be seen in these parts. Old wooden boats are somehow drawn to some magnetic ... read more

En Cap Sizun Brittany If you can not improve the silence then don’t break it. Clear sky above - silence all around - near solitude abounding. Not many around – its outside tourist season. Not a lot happening except the sea smashing itself against rocky cliffs. 2 places of note 1. Point du Raz – is the westernmost point of (mainland) France. Ile de Sein immediately offshore. 2. Pointe du Van – where we camped atop a cliff overlooking the Atlantic – A quiet black sky dropped in after sunset and later lit up with a set of stars lit up like LEDs A few weeks ago I compared Audeville in Normandy with Land’s End in Wales. I have to amend that. French cartographers refer to Point du Raz as their “ Lands End” . While ... read more

Europe » France » Brittany » Audierne October 8th 2015

AUDIERNE BRITTANY We were looking for a bit of sun and hopefully a beach after 4 days of rain interspaced with howling gusts of Atlantic winds that rocked poor old Skippy when we parked at night. Audierne faces south west and might be out of the way of the worst of the north winds that bring the worst weather. And as we got near the fog lifted and the sun worked its magic. The wind had blown the heavy weather away and inside at least we could feel more positive. Audierne is not exactly on a main tourist route but as I write at 6pm there are a dozen or so motor homes ( camping- car en François ) in the parking lot on the banks of Riviere le Goyen, and of course at this time ... read more

Europe » France » Brittany » Plougastel-Daoulas October 7th 2015

Plougastel Daoulas The Calvary Our camp was next to the town’s sports centre. A great cross section of age groups came and played and went. Lots were interested in skate boarding – which seems to be taught in formal sort of way with instructors. But many went indoors for soccer and tennis or squash. A rugby team practised tackling. A short walk away in the town centre a sculpted structure in the church yard drew our attention. This one is called “The Calvary”. From the 15th to the 17th centuries in this area parishes tried to outdo each other with flamboyant monuments in the church yard - or parish close. Architectural detail extended beyond the church to the grounds including a stone surrounding wall, a triumphal gateway, a fountain and a monument. This monument was built ... read more

Europe » France » Brittany » Dinan September 21st 2015

We took our first tentative steps into Europe with the camper van and into driving on the wrong side of the road when we set off for a week in what turned out to be a lovely little town - Dinan - in Britanny - me, Harriet and Holly. For a small and quiet tourist spot on a river, Dinan turned out to have plenty to keep us happy, even in the mixed autumnal weather we dodged in and out of. Some days we were crossing our fingers that it would stay dry for long enough for us to walk into town and back without getting wet - and, fortunately, it did! So we felt like we'd got away with it. Luckily for us the afternoons were mostly rain-free and, once we got into town, the ... read more

30thSlept late after a disturbed night & woke to thick mist & fog which cleared to reveal a beautiful day. We didn't do much – just sat in the sunshine, read our books & Cathy even caught a few zzz's in the chair... 31st A chilly start to the day again & we had a late breakfast then took the bikes out down unexplored lanes & around to the beach then back up the hill home. It got brighter so we walked back down the beach & decided to have moules frites at a lean to cafe opposite run by 3 hippy types, 2 girls & a chap all jolly friendly. The meal was lovely & they used thyme as a seasoning in the moules & on the frites. This was grand at the time but ... read more

Europe » France » Brittany » Benodet August 31st 2015

After an fairly easy ride, partly through the night, down to Benodet, we arrived to warmish weather and our square piece of grass/home for the next 12 nights. The campsite 'Camping du Letty' offered everything we needed and reminded me so much of when I went camping with my family throughout my childhood - it was quite a nostalgic holiday. We set up home next to some friendly Dutch and opposite some friendly Germans. Although we definitely did not have the gear that some people have (satellite dishes, rotary washing lines, speed boats) it was homely enough. The weather was a bit iffy so quite a few days we were dodging the rain by visiting some of the surrounding places of interest. One afternoon we went to a town called Audierne which although quite quaint did ... read more

28thAnother grim morning but a pleasant afternoon so took the bikes out past the local beach, up a steep hill & we found a little path off the coastal path that led down to a very treacherous point by the sea. There were stunning caves which echoed the boom of the waves hitting the back walls – I dare say that they'll become arches over time. A couple of fishermen were on another point half a mile away, a kayak was moving slowly moving through the swell – that was life that afternoon by the sea. We had a bite to eat & carried on round the roads back to the beach, watched life go by then headed back for tea. A German van had turned up & despite having the whole site to choose from, ... read more

Ha – the pc just changed 'mer' to merangue! I digress... A short hop north to our next campsite but first we visited the hypermarket for supplies & then went south to visit Rospico where we used to take the children when they were young. It hasn't changed one bit save for a new, pretty little cottage on top of a low cliff & brought back so many memories. We had lunch on a picnic blanket near the rocks & had a paddle – the water was freezing! We'd forgotten how cold the Atlantic is especially compared to the Adriatic & the Med. Found our next campsite easily enough, then the temperature started to drop & it showered into the evening but we ate outside anyway under the awning. The forecast wasn't great so we put ... read more

It's been very mixed weather but thankfully not much rain. Either hot sunny days or just overcast. We've bumbled about doing all sorts & meeting our neighbours. Across the way is a lady from Paris who used to run a tabac / cafe with her husband who died 3 years ago. She talks for France whether you understand her or not – I helped her out with her caravan door twice as she couldn't lock it & was called 'le gentil anglais' from then on. Next to us was who we called Gruntyman – he had some form of nervous tic & he grunted to himself ALL the time & especially when he was concentrating. On the other side was a young family – 3 children with one due in October...blimey! He worked for HSBC in ... read more
