As I write this I am sitting on the train back from Narbonne (on the med) to Bordeaux (on the Atlantic) after cycling through the south of France along the canals from the Atlantic coast to the Mediterranean The idea for this “mini break” came about as we are about to embark on the transmongolian express and for that we require visas for Russia , Mongolia and China so we had to send our passports away. Thankfully as we live in the Shengen area we can travel within that area on our ID cards, so a trip to France was planned. This trip was different for a number of reasons, firstly I (Septima) had to organise it) Jonathan does the most of the organising normally as he s so good at it and this was ... read more

Bonjour from Bordeaux!!!!!....Yesterday, Alliey and I journeyed from Tours to Bordeaux!!! We were able to find our hotel alright because it is near the station but it is not in the nicest of areas. Our hotel has an ocean theme and the bathroom in our room has a door like a submarine and has funny decor like an anchor rope hanging on the wall. In the evening we took the tram into the centre ville which is were all the interesting things are...Wow the city is almost completely covered in limestone (which according to the tourist office was cleaned by the government in 1985). We had dinner at a cheap cafe and then just walked around. Then we went and saw a movie called Les Citronniers which was a movie from Israel dubbed in French. Even ... read more

So ours first experience of Bordeaux was not so nice. We arrived Sunday night and it was misserably hot on the train and schlepping with our packs, to get to our tiny little room on the third floor wth no airconditioning. no kidding the hotel is done in a cheesy nautical theme like the loveboat or something. It looks like a cabin on a boat; two twin beds sqished together with about 10 inches around the bed to walk, a little counter along the far wall, and the bathroom looks like it is stright out of an submarine. Thats what we get for a 2 star hotel. Our neightborhood is not really pretty. Since it was so hot we decided to walk the city, we got off the tram in the first populated area we saw ... read more

I officially finished classes on Friday....yay!!! Now we have about 2 weeks off before we have 2 weeks of finals...I have 7 finals, but somehow I have 3 on the first day and 2 on the last day. Oh well...I heard they're really easy :) I forgot to mention...before one of our basketball practices a month or so ago, I got to the gym a little early. There was a guy coaching some kid and he ended up talking to me for a little bit. It turns out this guy was a trainer for Tony Parker and Boris Diaw!! I guess those two guys come to Bordeaux every July for a basketball camp...it was really cool to meet this guy! I ended up playing with them for a little bit before the rest of the team ... read more

Last week of April, we had a week off, so Kathi (Austrian) and I went to Toulouse, Montpellier, Marseille, Cannes, Grasse, Nice, and Monaco. The weather was amazing except for one kind of rainy afternoon, which we used to watch a movie. We went to Bievenue Chez les Ch'tis, a movie in French. It was a little hard to understand, but French people say they have trouble too, since the Northern accent in the movie is so strong. We couchsurfed again and it went really well. All the people were really nice and most of them cooked us dinner, so we saved a lot of money on food! Every day except for one, we went to the market in the morning and got fruit and a baguette for a picnic, which was always delicious! The one ... read more

Today I booked some of my flights *Bucharest June 19-June 22 * Senegal June 23-July 3 *going back to California after 7 1/2 months on August 5th I have to make appointments to get my yellow fever vaccination and my malaria pills. I'm so excited about everything right now, yet I'm terribly upset that I have to leave Bordeaux in a month. May 29th I go to Venice, and then I can no longer call Bordeaux my home. I'll no longer have a mailing address here, a bed to sleep on, or a place to live in Bordeaux. And I may never have any of those here again. I'll be back July 22nd to get some luggage, and August 3rd to get the rest of my luggage to take to London. But after that, no more ... read more

So I have been studying at the Université de Bordeaux III since September, and my studies are finally coming to a close in the next 2 weeks. I'm under a lot of stress right now because I have a 3 page compte-rendu on an article I have yet to read for my Archéologie Protohistoire course and an oral exam for Morphologie on Wednesday. Then I have my Syntaxe oral exam on Thursday, and a 4 page dossier for Linguistique: Principes et Méthods due on the 29th of April. The writing isn't too strenuous, in fact, I've cranked out 6/12 pages in a 6 hour period before (that was for my étude indépendent about la culture basque), but it's the fact that I have yet to read the texts that my papers are to be based upon. ... read more

Wow...it's been a long time since I've written...I've actually had some classes! :) School's still going well. Classes are kind of interesting and not a lot of work, so that's always good! We just had a professor from Colorado, so that was a lot of fun. I had a class Friday night and Saturday that was interesting. It was an elective, so there were a lot of French people in the class. The professor was from Ireland - she was interesting, but didn't have much tact! She said quite a few rude things about America and it got kind of annoying after a while. She said that French like the Canadians only because French don't like Americans... Which brings me to an interesting experience on the tram. I was going home from school with Kelsey, a ... read more
