World Cup fever was rampant by the time I hit Poland. Fellow travelers had come from Germany, others were going there. In hostel circles you could be guaranteed to have at least one backpacker from the country that was playing (except maybe Guana) to make things even more interesting. The atmosphere was incredible, further fuelled by the sweltering heat. Complete strangers became best mates or enemies over a game of football. Whilst in Poland and Czech I watched football every night it was on. Bars were decorated with team flags, sometimes entire tables were reserved in front of the big screen and the better hostels had their own screen set up. Football and beer go hand-in-hand, so I was forced to throw myself headlong into this once-every-four-years celebration. Before now, Id struggle to name more than ... read more

Sure you've heard of Bohema. Prague's the capital of that region, Bohemian is an adjective that applies to hipsters. But I'm not a hipster. That's why Sam and I went to Olomouc, the capital of the Moravian region of the Czech republic. It is a mid-sized city of 200,000, we were originally planning to stay one night, but we stayed 2 because it was so relaxing. There wasn't really a whole lot to see, it was just the atmosphere and the great people at the hostel, I talked to some Finns about their compulsory army, a Frenchman about the E.U. and Zidane, some Aussies about the West coast, etc. We also went to a tea house with a snobby guy who, when we told him we wanted green tea, said "we have 50 kinds." Whatever, we ... read more

so i didn't get to write about last night- which ended up being a lot of fun- so i'll start there. last night we met some of the czech students at 9:00 (everyone except for katie, who unfortunately has not been feeling so hot the past 24 hours). we thought they were just going to be taking us to a pub, but no! even better, they told us we were going up to the prague castle area. prague castle is high up above the city, so we hiked up this hill (there were steps, but it was a little grueling lol) we were all getting a little winded by the time we reached the top-- but when we finally did, it was absolutely breathtaking. the sun was setting at this point, and we were experiencing the ... read more

Sick in bed all day, so I guess that makes for a boring blog. I missed the last class with the Czech students, and the good-bye, so that was upsetting. I'm feeling better now, so hopefully I should make it to class activities tomorrow. ... read more

Enroute to the Heart of Bohemia with Child There is something about watching people just wander across train tracks with their bags, children and dog in tow that makes you realise you are in a country where the concept of 'safety' is more in tune with Darwinsim then with 'potential litigation'. If you get hit by a lurching rusty train, then you probably deserve to die for the sake of the gene pool. Train traffic at Cesky Krumlov is relatively infrequent, missing, slow or any combination of the above. "So what do we need to know about Prague?" Lisa asked Dan. "Oh I love Prague!" and he proceeded to ramble on about the Czech Republic history before pausing. "Oh, I better not tell you too much or I will spoil it for George. You will love ... read more

We have arrived in Cesky Krumlov - what has to be the most scenic village in the Country. It is a medieval castle town in Southern Bohemia built around the bending Vltava river. We are staying on the banks of the Blatva in a small pension operated by a very bohemian (small b) woman and her American writer-partner. Karen G, if you're reading this, you would love it. Bec finds the place very scary, as she feels like we're at Karen's place the whole time - it's decorated with wallhangings and flowers from their travels, and they are very serious about their Turkish coffee. The town is bordered on one side by a medieval castle, and its sloping grounds. There is an open air theatre there, where an "old music festival" (pre-1400) is currently being held. ... read more

Another long day. It seems like every day is long. We finally finished our presentations, so most of our responsibilities for the first class are over. We still have two more days of the class, but I believe that those will be filled with visits to ad agencies and things like that. After the presentation (my group went in the morning), my group went to lunch to celebrate before the other group had to present. I opted for a strawberry daquari instead of a pivo, which I believe was a very good choice. After the afternoon presentation I started feeling gross, but whatever. We talked to the Mizzou faculty that were there for a little while. We went to New Town to return some shoes, and then went to the travel agency to finalize our plans ... read more

Good Morning Cesky Bears There is nothing like wanting to avoid the crowds to make you jump out of bed early in the morning on your holidays. My first priority (after caffeine that is) was to climb Cesky Tower for the morning view of the UNESCO Heritage listed town. The town was already basked in early morning sun and in the pit of my tummy, I knew today was going to be a wonderful carefree day. The Cesky Castle bears thought so too as they were padding around their humble moat from one side, under the bridge and out to the other. Only a handful of voyeurs were hanging about and they didn’t mind the intrusion. A little French boy had a moment of stage fright coming down the wooden steps of the tower and promptly ... read more

yay for today being a successful and satisfying day! the presentations were presented, so no more talking about branding!!! lol- i really and truly enjoyed the subject-- i think we were just ready to be finished after working from 9-5 the past few days. the brand czech presented first at 9:00. visitors came from various important czech organizations, and it was a well done presentation. it was pretty much everything i expected them to present- basically everything we've been discussing/learning over the past week: all about the czech republic and their current situation. (the country doesn't have a strong brand ) katie and dionne were in that group along with a half of the czech students and three other mizzou students. our presentation wasn't scheduled until 1:00, so we had a lunch break and then c ... read more

Today was...long. After a fabulous day off we were back to work today, bright and early at 9:00 a.m. after I only got 3 hours of sleep (I blame the bugs). We came in and presented the presentations we had been working on for the past few days, but not to good results. The professors were unimpressed. I feel as if we did not get a clear idea of what they wanted from us for this presentation until this morning (I mean we were supposed to present a "strategy" but that can cover a lot of different things). Anyway, the late morning was spent making changes. Again, the Czech professor gave us the presentation he put together earlier and wanted us to do that presentation, adding "our thoughts" and again, we refused to do that. We ... read more
