The Rock Maze near Malá Skála On our hike through the hills around Malá Skála we entered several places where there were natural rock mazes. During the days of religious persecution Czech Brethren often hid in these areas. One was the refuge where Václav Sadovský ze Sloupna hid. We happened to be walking with three Czechs when we entered this particular place. The woman spoke to her husband and son who then son told us, "She said this is where Sadovský hid." Not five minutes before reaching this point I had said to Nancy, "This would be a great place to hide." Fortunately the trail was well marked. Otherwise we would have become completely lost and would still be wandering around among these bolders. The rocks are huge, some at least 70 or more feet ... read more

The words Cesky Raj translates into English as Czech Paradise. Here is information we found about the area where we were hiking. The Vranov castle was founded in early 15th century by Hynek of Waldstein. It is situated on a narrow sandstone cliff on the right bank of the Jizera river and with its length of 400 metres it ranks among the largest rock castles in the Czech Republic. Further owners have built a more comfortable family seat down in the valley, and the old castle has been abandoned. In 1802 the manor of Malá Skála was bought by Franz Zacharias Römisch, a merchant from Mikulášovice, who has changed the ruins into a romantic monument - Pantheon. Its surroundings have been decorated with various inscriptions, sarcophaguses and monuments, reminding of brave heroes and soldiers, outstanding artists, ... read more

Harrachov today - usual problems with parking - there was no parks! Nearest official parking was 3km from where we wanted to be, so we parked on a dirt patch just before the town. The glass works was in full swing making wine goblets today. They have a large furnace with several openings to get the glass, and 4 teams of workers. Each glass is hand made, but it is a production line. Two glass blowers make the bowl of the glass - blowing it into a wooden mould. This then gets passed to another worker, who fashions the stem, and then to another one who makes the base, then it is taken off on a cableway to a furnace so that it can cool down slowly. It’s hot work for the glass blowers, so thirst ... read more

So after vaguely mentioning to a friend that I might volunteer for an English camp a few months ago, she promptly marched me up to one of the Czech girls to sign me up… I’ll admit that I very nearly got terribly ill and couldn’t go… But I’m so glad I did! It was located at a hotel (a term I’m using loosely… it was more like school camp facilities - including shared rooms and communal toilets) in the Czech mountains (complete with sheep grazing under the currently defunct ski lifts) and was organised by a Czech church here in Prague. There were about 30 kids aged 15-25, Czech leaders, plus the “native speakers” who all sign up to come for a week out of their summer holidays. Most of the kids were Czech, and the ... read more
