Check-in; everything that could go wrong, did. I was late coming back from Mostar, and I got around 10 phone calls en route back to Split from the Katarina Lines girls (they couldn't get in touch with Simon because he had started his holiday already and his phone was off). One pax had booked with friends but wasn't on the same boat as them (their fault), another pax had the same problem (travel agent's fault) and others didn't like their rooms, or the boat wasn't how they expected or they were claustrophobic and didn't have enough door space. It was, well and truly, a gong show, but when I finally arrived I managed to switch some people around and appease everyone and I think they were all okay in the end. Some of them wrote on ... read more

The Italians ate all the Toast!!! If you haven't heard, Kim and I are vegetarians. As vegetarians, you often look for Italian food first when you travel. It is one of the most prolifically traveled delicious foods in the world that includes vegetarian dishes. Since we can get Indian and Thai at home easily, we look for Italian when we travel. Is 'prolifically' a word? That is the beauty of World-English, it is whatever you say it is. And, I hereby declare that 'prolifically' is a word. You can't do that in some languages. The thought police will arrest you. But you can do it with World-English if you keep moving globally. The thought police are only allowed to make arrests within their jurisdiction, and by the time they read this, we will be in another ... read more

After our long trip through HOSTILE territory, we arrived at the seaside of Dubrovnik which was a beautiful seaside town and a hotel with pools (2 and cold) saunas, and steam rooms. The sea was cooold, even colder than Port Phillip Bay!!! The town has ramparts erected during the time of the crusades. It was incredibly hot walking on the cobblestones, but very beautiful - Betty, Michael and I decided to buy some supplies and head back to the hotel. I spent the afternoon in the spa, they even had dark relaxation rooms to lie down, and lounge rooms with herbal teas and fruit. The following day we went to Montenegro, some of the most beautiful coastline yet - an expensive playground for the rich and famous. We stopped at a town called Kotor, which is ... read more

After 5 days of rest and relaxation on Hvar, it was time to get back on the road. Up at 6am, we were in the ferry line by 6:45am. We ended up being one of last 20 cars on the 7:45am ferry. The 2 hour ferry ride was spent playing backgammon, snoozing and sunbathing. Matt and Syd had their eyes on some marble bowls back in Diocletian’s palace in Split so as we drove back through, they ventured off to grab these souvenirs (they each try and grab something that represents the trip to them - apparently these bowls will be filled with a bit of sand, shells and rocks to capture their Croatian experience). We decided not to retrace our steps along the coast and got onto the A1, part of the incredible highway stretching ... read more

Ok guys and girls, This is the first blog of the 2009 extravaganza 6 lads in total for the first week in croatia followed by another 2 by myself and patto. I am sitting writing this in the Pearl of the Adriatic - Dubrovnik havent had much chance to explore just yet but i hope to get some photos and upload them shortly. We started the good times in Zagreb Croatias capital and as to be expected the first night out was one of the biggest. we spent the day wandering around the city which is much the same as any other and sampling some of the local food, we hung out in the hostal and met a few people there before heading out to a number of clubs around the lakes- obviously at 4 in ... read more

We left early in order to make the hour drive back to Spilt and catch the ferry to Hvar. We had pre-bought our ferry tickets but on close scrutiny realized that they were not for any particular boat so we wanted to make sure we would get our car on. The line-ups reminded us of the pandemonium on the docks of Athens but to a much lesser degree. After a couple of u-turns in the middle of traffic, we managed to get ourselves in the right line (we think) to get the 11am ferry to Hvar. The person that guided us into position (unbeknownst to us) was a squeegie guy in disguise. What we thought was amazing ferry service as our windows were being cleaned turned out to be a fee for service. Ah, well, you ... read more

We are traveling south along Croatia on a ferry in the Adriatic Sea. We took a 2 hour bus from Rovinj to Rijeka. The driver was smoking below a no-smoking sign, so we didn't feel guilty about eating and drinking below the no eating or drinking signs. We then took the ferry. The overnight ferry from Rijeka to Dubrovnik was sold out of private rooms, so we slept on deck. It departed at 8pm and arrived in Dubrovnik at 3pm the next day. Yes, a 19 hour ferry ride. We slept on the floor below a table and read books. It stopped four times along the way as new sets of people came and went. We got some nice pics. Kim said she will be planning the trips in the future. She said she is not ... read more
