... make sure you leave your usual tastebuds at home ... Ampak najprej lepo po vrsti. Torej! Tokrat odkrivamo Balkan v svoji najbolj pristni, e kar malo orientalski izvedbi. Pot naju je vodila mimo hrvaških naftnih polj (?!) do mejnega prehoda Gradiška (ki je nekoč bil Bosanska Gradiška, a so prvi del besedne zveze lepo prelepili in izbrisali), mimo naju so švigali avtomobili tudi z LJ, MB in CE registracijo - ovitek slovenski, vsebina izključno bosanska. In evo nas v Bosni! Za začetek so naju pozdravili kineski shop, pravoslavna in katoliška cerkev ter imena mest v cirilici. Welcome to Bosna - Serbian edition. To, da smo še daleč od pristne muslimanske izkušnje, so dali vedeti tudi stalno ponavljajoči se napisi prasetina. In pa pravoslavna cerkev v gradnji, s katere se je bahavo sončila srbska zastava. Ujagala ... read more

After Budapest, we were facing the issue of where we wanted to travel to next on the trip. We had about 7 days until we were scheduled to be in Venice to meet up with our friends Pete and Fallon. We looked at where trains in Budapest would take us and we decided to go to Belgrade, Serbia. Our experience with the Serbs started right when we entered the train. We shared a compartment with a younger women named Stela. What an interesting and fun person to share a 7 hour train ride! We talked nonstop the whole way. A Serbian living in Hungary, Stela was eager and willing to share her thoughts on anything from Serbian Politics to working for big evil corporations to EU membership to Cinema. Arriving in Belgrade, we were excited to ... read more

Hello, hello Well, we simply couldn't help ourselves, we saw Bosnia on the map, and thought, who visits Bosnia?! Well, that in itself was enough to convince us that we should make a stop there. So, Sarajevo was our destination and we knew this time we were city bound and not tenting due to the unexploded land mines that haunt the city. So, after a crude introduction to the local food (imagine a McDonald’s cheeseburger without the cheese, but with a bit more grease) for breakfast, we set out to see the city. It didn't take long for the lingering history of the city to flood the sight and sense, but it was interesting and inspiring to see people my age, walking about and just knowing what they have experience over the last decade and constantly ... read more

he thought of breakfast wasn't enticing enough to get us out of bed willingly however our checkout time was 10am so an early start it was. Breakfast was eggs with bread which was o.k, but Rob had most of mine. Due to our early start we had plenty of time to get to the history museum. We walked past an information board that said that the temperature was -5°c which we definitely felt. On the way we stopped for a quick detour around the outdoor market. This was the site where two shells hit and 68 killed and a further 200 people were injured. Besides the plaques on the wall with the names of the victims, you couldn't tell what had happened there; it was a colourful, busy produce market. We arrived at the museum and ... read more

We were not sure when we woke up whether our city tour was to go ahead or not. At breakfast the two guys from New Zealand (Dubrovnik bus, Mostar, restaurant etc) were on the table adjacent to us and in chatting we discovered they had also signed up for the tour. Breakfast was chicken soup for Rob and chickenless soup for me. If soup wasn't weird enough we also both had a little pot of rice pudding. The tour was run by Mustafa, the guy that picked us up from the station yesterday. He introduced himself and told us a little about what we were driving past. Our first stop was the tunnel museum which is quite far out of the center near to the airport. The museum is run by a family whose house the ... read more

We were offered tea/coffee when we got up and I foolishly accepted. I asked for black tea so she went to have a look. Steph watched as she brought the water to boil on the stove and then threw in a selection of herbs like a wicked witch. The tea (which came with biscuits) of course was not English tea nor was it even Indian tea, in fact it was quite yellow and tasted dreadful. Being polite, I drank it until she left the room and then I tipped it down the sink and had biscuits for breakfast. From the hostel we walked to old town and the bridge on the way to the Mostar museum. On top of the bridge were the same lads from Dubrovnik and the night before. The museum took some finding ... read more

Rob left the heating on 30°C all night so we both woke up pretty warm. Neither of us wanted to go back to old town so instead we walked into a part of the new town called Lapad. We bought some stamps so that we could get our postcards sent off and then we were stuck for something to do. We both discussed the possibility of getting something to eat and began to search for somewhere. It was only when we found a pleasant Italian that we discussed with each other that we weren't hungry. After this we headed to a supermarket and bought bread, fruit, dried fruit etc for the bus journey. We sat outside the supermarket and had baguette and the jam from the previous day. Seeing as though we couldn't think of anything ... read more

A Sarajevo snowfall... imagine that! I never thought I'd live to see this! We're definitely leaving Sarajevo tomorrow morning, so I enjoyed this final day thoroughly. Mike is happy to spend the rest of his two-week holiday here because he loves it so much, and so do I. I'm happy I met him; I wouldn't want to be here without someone to enjoy it with. And I miss Sasa a little less everyday, which is good. I LOVE THIS BEAUTIFUL WORLD!! This morning, I woke to a serious blizzard. A foot of snow on the ground, and here I was with only sandals and thin little shoes that are too small and are hurting my feet already. The pain, plus the snow, made wearing them all day an impossibility, so I was determined to find new ... read more
