Today i woke up at about 8 am and took a shower and french braided my hair, I call that my traveling hairdo. I went to the tube station and topped up my card to get to Heathrow...Surprisingly it only cost me a pound to do that, so that was refreshing and it only took like 45 minutes to get there, not the hour i had planned on. Then, i went to check in for my flight to Brussels. it was through bmi, so i just had to use the self check in machines which were quite easy to use. Also, since i wasn't checking baggage, I had a lot of time to look around the airport at the shops and what not. I had breakfast and waited for my plane. It was on time! YEA! ... read more

On Sunday we visited the town of Dinant on our way back to Gent. It was another beautiful day, and the view that greeted us when we got off the bus was of the fortified citadel looming overhead. Many of us climbed to the top. The Citadel provided a great view of the city and the bridge below. We took a guided tour of the citadel. It was informative, but a little slow because everything had to be repeated in three languages: French, Dutch, and English. Probably one of the most interesting parts of the tour was when we walked through an old bunker. Apparently at one time a bomb exploded near it, shifting it off its vertical axis. The whole place was enclosed, and the effect was one of serious vertigo. Your eyes tell you ... read more

I had such a good time with ESN on the "Gent by Night" tour, why not follow up with an ESN weekend in the Ardennes? We left Gent at about 5:30 on Friday afternoon and took a chartered bus to the little town of Hastiere. On the way we stopped at the Belgian equivalent of a truck stop. Not a rest area, but one of the big inter-country convenience stores. It was like any other convenience store in Arkansas, except for the resaurant spanning the highway. I'd never seen anything like it before. It was built like an overpass, but had a restaurant on top instead of a road. It's really quite an intelligent design because it is accessible from both sides of the highway. In Hastiere we stayed in a nice old building that was ... read more

I was lucky enough to have two Dusseldorf trips one after the other, which was just as well after the previous days' episode. I went straight to the central station and made sure this time i had got on the right train. I arrived at a place called Aachen which is just before the Belgium border where i had to change trains. It was a quick 10 minute journey over the border where i had to change trains again. Forty five minutes later i was finally in Liege. Got out of the station to find out that if i wanted to go to the city centre i would need to catch ANOTHER train. So by the time i got there it was already dark and i only had a couple of hours to look around before ... read more

Maybe I didn't realize what I was getting myself into, or maybe I knew exactly what I was doing. You be the judge. ESN, or Erasmus Student Network, is a group of local volunteers who help organize activities and social events for foreign students here in Gent. I'm on their e-mail list, and here's the e-mail that caught my attention: GHENT BY NIGHT Wednesday 15 march there will be the ‘Ghent by night’ city tour. We leave at 20.00 at de brug. Your tour guides will be Petrus and David. What to expect - The most beautiful places in Ghent by night. - The best bars in Ghent (This means not the bars in the overpoort). - All kinds of useless information concerning Ghent, bears and bars. - Some of the best bears and drinks in ... read more

Today I took a trip to the Fort of Breendonk, not far from Gent. Breendonk was originally built in the early 1900's as part of the outer defense network for Antwerp. During WWII the Nazi's took posession of the fort and used it as a concentration camp. The fort now stands as a memorial to those who suffered during WWII. The visit to Breendonk was not exactly pleasant. I'm not going to post a lot of photos here, just a few to give you an idea of the place.... read more

So, you may be wondering...what have I been doing with my free time since I've been here? By free time (of which I have very, very little) I mean the times when I'm not working, going to class, commuting back and forth to Brussels, studying, trying to learn Dutch (and usually failing miserably), or traveling. Well, believe it or not, I've actually made a few friends over here. I mainly hang around my American friends, and a bunch of other foreign students...birds of a feather and all. I've included some photos to show you who I like to spend my time with. Enjoy!... read more

I've been back from my travels a month now, and Brussels is its usual rainy self. But en route for Brussels I stopped off for a drink to celebrate April and Andrew's engagement in London (notice the sparkling ring!). Congratulations! I spent my birthday with my sis, Clare, and my adorable nieces. We did loads of great things in Brussels like go to the Children's Museum, as well as Oceade. But the most enjoyable part was the day we spent making things out of fimo, as well as the 'pop concert' Clare and I had to sit through... Anyway, I'm about to enter my last month in Brussels, so here is a picture of the view from my kitchen, midwinter! I love this view, and will be very sad to leave:(... read more

OK, so I got up this morning and it was snowing outside. We decided to go see the Museum Dr. Guislain. I'm writing this almost three weeks later, and I'm in a hurry, so I'll be brief. The Museum Dr. Guislain was a really bizarre museum, but I found it immensely entertaining. The museum is housed in an old insane asylum and depicts artwork by the mentally deranged. The exhibit I went to that day was called "Pijn" (Pain) and focused on art that was about, or influenced by pain. Wild. ... read more
