Background: Belgium became independent from the Netherlands in 1830 and was occupied by Germany during World Wars I and II. It has prospered in the past half century as a modern, technologically advanced European state and member of NATO and the EU. Tensions between the Dutch-speaking Flemings of the north and the French-speaking Walloons of the south have led in recent years to constitutional amendments granting these regions formal recognition and autonomy.

Belgien 2008

Europe » Belgium » West Flanders » Oostende
Here you'll find the pictures of our trip to Belgium in August 2008. We stayed in Middelkerke (near Oostende) for nine days, living in the appartment of a friend of us. There we spent some nice days together with our friends from Belgium, enjoying the sun (specially the sunsets) and the fine food... [View Full Entry]

We travelled back for our night in Oostend after our relaxing beach getaway. Oostend is at least in the guidebook.... It definitely has more people, and more young people, which is neat. But we're only in town for the night, and we're q bit beached out, so we just walked around. And played a round of mini)golf. I managed to beat Neil (for the first time at anything golf related) 52-58 thanks to a waterhazard that he couldn't seem to get passed... There was a group of people ahead of us about our age that played like they'd never held a [View Full Entry]

Well..it's time for a new story, from new travels. For some wonderful reason, we had 2 days free and so I got 4 days holiday..and together with my boyfriend and another Romanian girl, we decided to visit some cities around Belgium, to get to know better the culture and the environment. First city on the list was randomly chosen as Oostende, a small town near the North Sea. The weather was acceptable and we were eager to see one of Belgium's edges. It appeard quite nice, I must say. We took some bikes from a free renting place and we [View Full Entry]

Emma and I took a long walk out onto a pier and this was the view back at the beach where we spent the day. The town of Oostende isn't exactly beautiful, but luckily we weren't there for touring pret... [more]
Today is the last day to use our eurrail pass. Though it was quite cloudy and chilly we made plans with the Clasens to meet at the train station in Oostende. We biked to the Leuven train station and managed to catch the 9:35 train (only because it was 15 minutes late otherwise we would have missed it). The train was packed but it was an easy 1.5 hour trip and the kids were all good; they must be getting used to it. We arrived shortly before Zoe and Christian and so we got a cup of coffee. Once together we [View Full Entry]

Belgium is a country I've visited each year since 2000, when I was a first year student at university. In some years, I've had more than one visit (a main holiday and then two other shopping trips!) and last year we were fortunate enough to spend Christmas in Brugge, which was a fantastic experience - very cold but beautiful! In three weeks we will be flying off to Belgium again - from London City with VLM - and having a 10 day holiday in Oostende. I've had short visits to Oostende before, but never a holiday there so it will be [View Full Entry]

lots of trains today, and i mean lots. checked out of the snuffel (sob) at 10am, after a brilliant few days there. if anybody is staying in brugges anytime soon, i really cannot recommend it enough, its a brilliant place. the staff are all brilliant, even if i did manage to kinda insult one of them. a girl from yorkshire strangley enough, complimented me on my orange exploding dog shirt, and then said 'this is where you say nice shirt to me', to which i replied, for some stupid reason, 'yeah, but...'. good work bills, good work. but yes, the staff [View Full Entry]

Well as you may or may not remember we were heading on a bike trip from the Belgium coast to France and down the Seine into Paris. But alas as the title of this entry implies this endeavor was not as successful as we had hoped… We began our (brief) journey at the Leuven train station where we first realized that things might not go as smoothly as we had hoped. We purchased tickets for our bikes and ourselves to take to train to Oostende on the Belgium coast where we would begin our ride. We were led to believe that [View Full Entry]

So it's still Saturday, the second day of my time in Belgium. It's about 3:30 or 4:00 in the afternoon. I've been touring Brugge all day, there's only about an hour or two of light left...what to do next? Hop a train to Oostende. Oostende is a port city on the North Sea and it is very close to Brugge (everything is close to everything in Belgium). I thought the town was great. Didn't spend much time there, just long enough to walk down to the beach, dip my hand in the North Sea (just to say I did), and walk [View Full Entry]
