Anyone who reads my utterings knows I like eastern philosophy . They also know I have a calendar which offers me pearls of wisdom each morning. Sometimes the words are short and pithy. I understand them easily and they resonate well with me. Other times they go on and on, rambling missives that mean nothing to me. Today Swami Vivekananda was offering a long thought for the day around success and ideas. I guess it did resound well when I read the first line. " Take up one idea " "Make that one idea your life - think of it, live on that idea" Our one idea at the moment was Gabby and the Sat Nav . We slept poorly as we thought about Gabby. Was she safe? When she is not under your feet you ... read more

Europe » Belgium » Hainaut » Charleroi August 2nd 2016

I woke up feeling fed up again. The reason was self-evident: it was my birthday and I was going to be spending it alone in a foreign city. And not just any foreign city, but Charleroi, one I knew next to nothing about apart from that it was in Belgium. I opened my laptop to find out more. What is Charleroi all about? Charleroi, it turned out, was the fourth largest city in Belgium. It was, by most accounts, a dump, long past its heyday, with some of the highest unemployment rates in Belgium. The city was wallowing in its faded industrial past and only had one tourist site of note – a photography museum. In 2010, a Dutch newspaper described Charleroi as the ‘ugliest city in the world’. More recently, a reviewer of ... read more

Well, I have survived my first week in Belgium. I spent most of the week getting to know the numerous faces in my new unit as well as apartment hunting. I found the perfect apartment in downtown Mons which I am hoping I will be moving into very soon. It has to pass the "American Housing" inspection before I sign my lease. I have already satisfied some European food cravings this week. I was able to enjoy schnitzel, pommes, kebabs, and various pastries from the boulangeries here. I was introduced to the flower and food market held every Sunday in downtown Mons. Using my fabulous French skills, I was able to order a baguette and homemade butter, petite e sale sil vous plait. I also paid 70 euro cents for two gigantic peppers which made an ... read more

With the weather looking more promising today, we headed off on our bikes. Today we passed into the French speaking part of Belgium. Nina told us that if she speaks Dutch in Wallonia they will ignore her!! Although the weather was sunnier today, we had a very strong head wind ... all day!! It was a bit tiring riding all day into a head wind, but Nina seemed to know when we were flagging and scheduled well-spaced stops for coffee, lunch and so on. We made excellent time today arriving in Tournai by about 1.30pm with the five spires of the Notre Dame de Tournai creating a stunning silhouette on the horizon as we approached. We locked up our bikes by the Pont des Trous where the Elodie would be mooring and Nina walked us into ... read more

We slept in the van outside the Hoegaarden brewery that night waiting for our tour/visit with no bother at all. Woke up on the Monday and found out the brewery was shut, great. Went on to the Sasson Dupont brewery and that was also shut. Great. So by now we’re pretty pissed off with the whole place, its Monday for gods sake, not Sunday so get up off your arse’s and open some stuff! So with nothing being open and the general attitude we ran into, we left Belgium pretty sharpish, never to return. What a waste of time and money.... read more

Hello everyone! Spain was one of my favorite trips that i have ever went on. Why you ask? Because... 1: Spain(andalusia-a region in the south) is very very beautiful-the paysage itself is breathtaking- i couldnt stop looking at it! Also the towns are beautiful too-all white like the houses in greece. There are tons of flowers in the villages too as well as orange trees all along the roads. The smell is intoxicating. The ocean was beautiful too-the water was still cold though :p 2: It was a trip with the grad class so it was a lot of fun spending time with eachother all together. The ambiance was really good and i ended staying up late every single night-didnt sleep a whole lot-but it was worth it! 3: The trip didnt miss any of its ... read more
