Another beautiful day in Vienna... we really have been lucky with the weather so far. We started off this morning at the Spanish Riding School, home of the Lippanzer Stallions. We watched the morning exercise, which basically consists of two hours of watching the horses run and trot in circles. It was a bit monotonous, but the horses are beautiful so we stayed the whole time. They offer a Gala Performance on certain nights, but the price is rather high and the seats sell out quickly, so the exercise is a cheaper alternative. After the riding school we went to the Natural History Museum (the KHM) because we had free tickets. The museum was pretty much like every other history museum I've been to, so I wasn't too impressed with anything there. However, since it ... read more

Hallo from Innsbruck! The train ride from Verona to here was spectacular. The plan was to stop here for 2 nights on our way to Munich, but we've fallen in love with this place and have been here now for 4 nights. This place is beautiful with so much to do, and with one discount card so cheap. On our second day we took 2 cable cars up the mountains over 2300m where we threw snowballs at each other and made a snowman, it was Neetz's first time in the snow. Would you believe it's summer here? After defrosting we went to the small Alpenzoo where we made fun of the mooses. Our third day we took the shuttle bus out to the famous Swarovski Crystal Worlds which was pretty cool. After that we went ... read more

Vienna was something of a down-tempo jump after the insanity of Prague. I struggled to find a bar with live music, let alone a CD track. Vienna is a city of culture, music and beautiful beautiful buildings. Leaving Prague was a tough one. It had been the best time of my travels so far - many friends, many beers and many nights out. I had been itching for a back-to-back nights out since Amsterdam, and Prague sated my appetite. But Vienna. Stepping from the train and being hopelessly lost (despite being within two hundred metres of the chosen hostel), did not bode well and the hostel, Wombats Hostel Vienna, was akin to an Argos store of backpackers. With not much to do in the city night-wise, no wonder the hostel bar (with free pool.... muwhahaha, ... read more

After leaving Hallstatt we were on way to Innsbruck. Th train trip was real postcard stuff, mountains, lakes, rivers all the way. We had to change trains at a place named Stainach. While we were scoffing down breakfast on the platform an old local came up to us for a bit off a chat. This is one of the things Glenn really likes, finding out the inside info from the locals. Turned out this guy was 85 years old and on his way out for a bit of mountain climbing. He told us he had climbed all of the mountains in the local area, the last one around 2000 metres when he was 83. Quite an amazing bloke. We arrived in Innsbruck early in the afternoon and after checking into our hotel headed straight out ... read more

We started today off with a city tour of Vienna. Our driver, Joseph, suggested we go to Schonbrunn Palace because it is a holiday here today and many things would be closed. We headed to the palace and got there early enough to beat the crowds. We took an audio tour of 41 rooms (out of 1440!). Schonbrunn Palace was the summer residence of Empress Maria Theresia (mother of Marie Antoinette). After the tour we continued our city tour around the center of Vienna. We walked around the Josefplatz area and saw the Lippanzer horses in their stables at the Spanish Riding School (we are going back tomorrow to see a morning rehearsal). Joseph then drove us around the Ring and dropped us off at the Sigmund Freud museum where we also took a tour. ... read more

This is my first official day in Vienna and I am operating on about 2 hours of sleep over the past two days so I will keep this first entry short. Our flights were pretty uneventful. I did get an empty seat next to me on the long flight (Austrian Air) so I could stretch out a bit. Unfortunately that little perk did not help me get any sleep...instead I opened my eyes to find the woman who was seated two seats down from me with her head practically in my lap. After struggling to reclaim my extra leg room, she ended up laying down on the floor to try and sleep (which was quite entertaining to watch, right up until the flight attendant scolded her for doing it). When we arrived it was about ... read more

We were up early for our 4 hour train trip to Hallstatt. After an enormous breakfast (Tim) we hailed a taxi and headed to the station. A small error (Vicki) saw us miss the first train and had an hour delay for the next one. lol We travelled through some amazing country side mainly through the lakes district. There are many lakes in this area will small towns on their shores. Arriving at Hallstatt we had to take a short ferry ride to the town. What a sight it was from the ferry!!!! Everyone on the boat fell silent as they madly clicked away on their cameras. Thank god for digital you can just go crazy, and we did. We left Ljubljana early Monday morning headed for Salzburg. The train trip there took abount 4 hours and as you would expect provided spectacular views of the Austrian countryside. After checking into our 600 year old hotel we headed out to make the most of our short stay here. We wandered through the old town before taking the funicular up the mountain to the castle that overlooks the city. We really had a sense of DeJaVu having done the same thing with Matthew, Sharee and Ross two years ago. we even sat at the same table at a cafe in the castle and enjoyed a 0.5 lite of the local beer Stiegl, one the best we have sampled so far. One our way back we set out to find the same restaurant that we had ... read more
