Lindsay and I took our time making our way back to Austria from Northern Italy. We stopped off at a scenic lake for a sausage lunch (of course!) and got off the highway a few times to take the smaller roads. We arrived in Salzburg after about 4 hours of driving and checked into our hostel, the Institute St. Sebastian, which is a women’s religious student dorm during the school year, but rents out some of the rooms during the summer. They had lost our reservation because another person with the exact same name had checked into the hotel the night before using our reservation information. So, now we’re here for two nights instead of three (they didn’t have a room for the third night), but luckily we were able to add another night to ... read more

OMG~ as soon as we drove into Austria, my heart skipped a beat. Gorgeous green mountains, rivers, lush green grass and the friendliest people on the planet. Always smiling and helpful even when they don’t understand us. The day started off very well with a gorgeous mountain bike ride through the forest, mountain and along the river. The ride was 10kms long stopping half way of a nice lunch in a traditional house. It gave me time to think, this world has so much to offer and traveling is the one thing I will never stop doing. Breathing in the fresh air and seeing these mountains made me realize why city slickers go for the sea change or green change. It’s amazing and the best place so far on my trip. After the mountain bike ... read more

Austria (19th - 24th June, 2007) From Germany we continued our road trip driving across the boarder in to Austria. Innsbruck We were surrounded by mountains as we got closer to Innsbruck. Such beautiful countryside. Innsbruck is where Swarovski Crystal is made so we paid a visit to the museum called Kristallwelten. The museum was really well done however mum had great difficulty restraining herself in the shop at the end! There was one or two crystals brought home! And these small crystals are packed in huge boxes with loads of padding. Great for travelling! Of course it's all about the food and while in Innsbruck we sampled all the local delicacies including apple strudel, apple champagne and weiner schnitzel. Salzburg Move over Fraulien Maria! We made it to the land of The Sound of Music. ... read more

Ajd on a fait le palais de Schoonbrun..qui etait pas mal une grosse crosse selon moi.... read more

Okay, maybe that title was just a cheap excuse to use the word "Wiener." We arrived in Vienna on Friday after a short one hour train ride from Bratislava and found our way to Hostel Ruthensteiner. The hostel was great - really clean and bright and well-run, and best of all, they had washers and dryers. We spent our first morning/early afternoon in Vienna just doing laundry (first time we've had a dryer since we went home for Christmas!) and catching up on email. Later in the afternoon we ventured into the city and headed to the Kunsthistoriches Museum, which holds the Hapsburgs' collection of European art, as well as an Egyptian art section that we didn't have time to see. The museum was great, if a bit expensive. That night we walked around for ... read more

June 18th 2007 It´s Monday, so back to work cyling with our full packs. But as we leave Graz we follow the Mur River down to the Slovenian border we have finally an easy cycling day. We leave early so as to benefit from the cool morning. Together with a pleasant tail wind this strategy pays off as we find a campsite past our target distance for the day by a lake by mid afternoon which allows for a swim and a leisurely dinner at the campsite restaurant. ... read more

We spent another day exploring a bit of the city and walking around. We had some delicious austrian food and then decided to head to Innsbruck to crash for the night before taking a train the next day to Garmisch-Partenkirchen to meet with one of my college friends living there, Kim. Aaron decided to read the arrivals board rather than the departures so we missed out train to innsbruck and instead decided to go to Munich for the night and catch a train to Garmisch in the same fashion the next day. The train took about six hours and we arrived in Munich late to crash after grabbing some food and realizing that our hostel was likely next to every sex shop and strip club in Munich. ... read more

Take the train to Deutschlandsberg in the Southwestern part of Styria on Sunday. There is the opening of the regional wine festival taking place in the Castle (on top of a steep hill). The event is quite fun - the castle exhibits are open, free wine and food samples from the region, a lederhosen band, beautiful sunshine - and magnificient views of the Sulmtal (valley) which is described as the Tuscany of Styria. After the opening of the festival - the speeches go on about Styria´s two trademark food products - Schilcher (a rose wine) and Kernoel (pumpkin seed oil) - the latter is present in great quantity on all salads in the region and for sale at many farms in the region (there is obviously an oversupply) - we continue on our bicycles (without ... read more

Aaron and I woke up and headed off the explore the city sometime around mid-day. We started by trying to find a good place to eat that was relatively cheap but (as I later realized) were looking in totally the wrong area. We looked for a bit and finally just decided to eat at a cafe that had nice people watching opportunities. I ordered and apple juice and wiener snitzel which ended up costing somewhere around 10 euro and I could have literally finished the apple juice in two gulps. The food tasted decent though but was far too expensive for what it was. After eating we caught the metro to the main sight seeing areas to cruise around a bit and enjoy the majesty of vienna. The buildings were actually grand like everyone had ... read more
